THE CITY HOSPITAL.
That the city hospital is closed, is a cold
fact, staring the people of Douglas and vicinity
in the face. It is one of the most unfortunate
occurrences that Douglas has had to encounter
for a long time. It is an institution that no city
can afford to be without, especially one the size
of Douglas, and more especially since its advent
has done s« much for the city and county, not
alone in the real good it has accomplished, but
in the matter of advertising this immediate sec
tion.
Dr. Roberts, who has had the hospital in
charge for some time, says that the institution
has been a success, from a standpoint of what it
has accomplished. Under his supervision the
hospital has done a most wonderful work and
has advertised this section of the state in no
Mmall way, as it has become known as one of
the best hospitals in South Georgia.
But to the point. While the institution has
made wonderful strides since its establishment,
it has done so at the expense of an ambitious
physician and surgebn, who has given several
years of his life to the making of the reputation
of the Douglas Hospital, and has not been prop
erly recompensed for these services. It takes
money to successfully operate a hospital, as this
one has been conducted. The outgo has been
•a jity.® rfiore than the income each month, and no
man or set of men can stand for this long. So
Dr. Roberts had to quit it, and he will stay quit,
unless some means is provided for its main
tenance.

A hospital similar to this one is a matter of
public pride and public necessity. Douglas and
the county needs it, as they need no other in
stitution, unless it be the church. It goes hand
in hand with the church, and we could cite case
after case that this institution has taken care
of. and did so, when the management absolutely
knew that no pecuniary reward would be forth
coming. That is what the hospital has been
doing from a standpoint of charity.
This institution should be supported by the
city of Douglas and the county of Coffee, and
assisted by private donations from public spirit
ed citizens of the city and county. It will take
that to make a go of it, or, any other hospital,
of this kind, for that matter. Douglas nor the
county, have not done what they, could have
done, for this hospital. They have never con
sidered its real purpose, its great benefit to the
town and county, or, if they have, the officials in
charge have been sadly overlooking their duty
to one of the best known public institutions in
their midst. We understand that there are sev
eral public spirited people in Douglas who are
willing to make monthly contributions to the
maintenance of this hospital, provided the city
and county will do their part. And there’s the
rub.
The Enterprise wants to see the hospital
live. We want to see it continue its great work.
It can go on, if the right kind of support is
given it, a support that has not been given it,
but must be before the hospital can proceed any
further.
Think about it men of Douglas and Coffee
county. Suggest some way, and get busy and
help provide that way, and let’s continue to
keep open the doors of the Douglas Hospital,
the best advertisement for Douglas, and which
earned its fame thru merit only.
