Stewart of Coffee
(From Waycross Journal-Herald)
It is up to Coffee County to name
its own man for representative in
the General Assembly, and in a way
it is not our business, or the business
of ony one outside of that county, to
name the man. Still the representa
tive of Coffee is also the representa
tive of all the people of the state,
and inasmuch as he helps to make
laws to govern all of us we are in
this way interested in the man even
though we have no voice in naming
him.
For a number of years Mr. Charles
E. Stewart of McDonald has been
representing Coffee county. He has
been re-elected a number of times
over opposition by large majorities,
in the September primary, Mr. Stew
art was opposed by a Mr. Paulk, and
the election returns showed Mr. Paulk
nominated by a few votes. Mr. Stew
art went before the county executive
committee and contested Mr. Paulk’s
nomination on the ground that he
did not qualify as a candidate until
after the time for qualification had
expired, and also upon the ground
"hat he (Stewart) was not given cred
t for all the votes he received in the
VVillacoochee precinct. Mr. Stewart
claimed that he had affidavits from
nore men saying they voted for him
han the election managers gave him
credit for. The county committee
urned him down, and the state ex
ecutive committee, and Mr. Stewart

says may be true or false, so far as
w e know, but we do know that Coffee
county will make a mistake if it
does not send Charley Stewart back
to the legislature.
We have watched very closely the
records of members of the General
Assembly from South Georgia, and in
justice to Mr. Stewart we feel that we
should say that at the present mom
ent we can not i - ecall a single in
stance when Mr. Stewart failed to
vote in the interest of his people.
He has favored every progressive
measure that has come beore the
house during his service. He has vot
ed for all prohibition measures, and
on every occasion supported measures
in the interest of the working man
and the farmer.
We consider that Charley Stewart
has one of the very best legislative
records, and one of which any member
could justly be proud. We believe
that the voters of Coffee county think
about this matter as we do and will
see to it that it will be “Mr. Stewart
of Coffee” in the next legislature, adv.
