If I knew you and you knew me—
If both of us could clearly see,
And with an inner sight divine
The meaning of your heart and mine,
I’m Sure that we would differ less
And clasp our hands in friendliness;
Our thoughts would pleasantly agree
If I knew you and you knew me.

THE TOLL OF THE HOLE WEEVIL.
The press is having a great deal to say
now-a-days about the boll weevil, the pest that
all Georgians have been looking forward to its
visit for several years, and now that we have it
in our midst, experts are holding meetings
throughout the state in an effort to hedge
against this menace in the best possible man
ner.
Already a boll weevil expert has been as
signed to Georgia for the remainder of the fall
and wintr, and he will give benefit of his knowl
edge and experience which he has gained dur
ing the past few years. He is under the super
vision of the government and will be at the
service of Georgia farmers during the winter.
The Augusta Chronicle contained a very
ime article on the subject in Wednesday’s paper,
and we herewith reproduce a part of this able
editorial which gives a vast amount of infor
mation aboljfthe insect:
“The story of the weevil as told from dif
ferent sections varies only in .the amount of
damage which has been wrought. An author
ity in Louisana declares that in the last four
years the damage in ten counties of that state

has been around $50,000,000 or $12,250,0000
per year in the ten counties. The egg of the
boll weevil is a small elliptical, glossy white
object, and upon hatching the lavae is a white
legless grub. The head and mandible aie dark
brown. It feeds upon the inner tissues of the
square of the boll, thus gradually increasing the
size of the whole as the larvae itself increases
in size and when fully grown it has eaten out
a comparatively large cavity in the square or
the boll. When the pupae is first formed it is
very tender and delicate, and as it ages the
outer skin becomes harder and tougher. When
grown the weevil varies largely in size, the
smallest being barely one-tenth of an inch long
and the largest a quarter of an inch long. Gen
erally the advance of the boll weevil does not
take place until fall, when large numbers fly
considerable distances. This is usually caused
by lack of food owing to the great number of
weevils eating everything in the way of cotton
in sight. The average distance traveled by the
weevils annually has been sixty-five miles but
since they have reached Georgia the progress
has been more rapid. In 1915 they traveled
100 miles in Georgia and almost as great an ad
vance has been made the present year.
“The spi'ead of the boll weevil is shown in
figures which the adult produces, the first hatch
ing being about June 30th, numbering seventy
weevils; the second generation, August 10th,
2,450 weevils; the third generation about Sept
ember 22nd, 85,750 and the fourth generation
about the first of November, 3,001,250. The
boll weevil is at present within fifty miles of
Augusta and during the next two weeks may
progress far in this direction.
“The only possible method by which to
combat this pest is in diversification and inten
sive farming. In the sections where the boll
weevil has been present for the past several
years the farmers have been forced to abandon
the one-crop plan, and once they have gotten
started they have prospered by the change, but
they have been slow to learn the lesson and the
cost of the experience has been heavy. The
thing for the business men and the farmers of
the Augusta district to do is to profit by the
experience of others and get ready now to evade
the dis astrous effects of the boll weevil, for
there is} no way to evade the boll weevil itself.’’

it was odds on Hughes.
