Dr. Jefferson Wilcox’s Withdrawal.
Willacoochee, Aug. 15. —Editor
Breeze :—I again ask permission
to make a statement setting forth
the reasons to mv friends for the
course I have taken. When I an
nounced for representative of Coffee
County I was under treatment for
deafness, I hoped to have my hearing
fully restored by October, but the
treatment has been a failure and 1
feel that it would be unjust to my
people who have Teen so loyal and
true to ask them to support one
physically unable to represent them.
1 regret more th in langauge is ade
quate to express, that God has seen
proper to lay the hand of affliction
so heavily upon me, yet, I feel
thankful that I have the manhood,
courage and patriotism, to step
down and out in behalf of a man
who is mentally and physically able
to represent the county in a credit
able way, one in whom every citi
zen in the county wili feel just
pride. I withdraw from the race
because lam physically unable to
represent the county and not be
cause I have any fear of defeat. I
feel that victory was mine, it was
already : n sight, clearly and posi
tively assured. Day after day since
I have been a candidate, I have had
men from every walk ol life to
come to my office and say to me
that my services to them, as a phy
sician, had been such that to cast
their vote for me was a pleasure.
Not only were they willing to vote
for me but were willing to go to
any part of the county and work for
me on the day of tire primary. To
each and every one of these noble
and generous hearted men 1 return
my most sincere and profound
thanks. Should it ever please God
to raise the hand of affliction from
me, and these loyal sons of my na-
tive county should again desire my
services in the political arena, I
feel that they would, to a man, ral
ly to my suppmt us they did in
1802 when I received 253 votes at
this (Willacoochee) my home pre
scint, being all that was polled,
and as they did in 18-96 when be
tween Judge C. A. W ard and my
self as candidates .for state senator
for the sth senatorial district, 1 re
ceived 176 votes, being the entire
vote cast. The record for 1904
would have been the same but for
my withdrawal. No higher com
pliment could have been paid any
man as citizen or public servant, and
I have not language to express my
deep gratitude to these friends and
neighbors. In my boyhood the good
people of Coffee County gave me
the needed encouragement and in
my young manhood they stood by
by me, and in my affliction they
have freely offered their sym
pathy and support. Again I offer
to them my heart of thanks and
pledge them my li f e-long friend
ship. As a democrat I have tried
to be true to the party of my*
fathers and as a citizen 1 have
been true to all.
I step down and offer to my
friends and the voters of the coun
ty the name of Mr. B. B. Gray who
is the peer of any in ability, honor,
and manhood and I ask for him the
united support of every citizen of
the county.
I cherish no grundge or feeling
of bitterness toward any man and
hail with dtlight the dawn of ai
day of harmony and an era of good
feeling in the politics of this my 1
native countyjand bid God-speed
to every iust and proper effort to
secure and maintain this result.
Truly and sincerely,
JEFFERSON WILCOX, M. D.

Republican Claims and Pronnsel^W
The Republican campaign coiiF
mittee has just issued a book filled
with the accomplishments of that
party in recent years, and makes a
number of promises for the future.
“Everything is fair in politics love
and war,” ’tis said, and the cam
paign committee has claimed the
responsibility for everything good
that has come to the people. The
peace and prosperity of the coun
try, t!ie high prices of cotton and
the plentifullness of money are
among bieessings showered by
providence through the instrumen
tation of the Republican party on
country. And (bis committee
points a warning finger at the peo
ple of the United states and insin
uates that if Democracy is allowed
to take holi on the affairs of the
country disasters innumerable will
soon befall the nation. Isn’t it
wonderful. But some things that
are not good or encouraging have
happened. Several strikes for liv
ing wages to enable the laborers to
feed wives and children, high
prices for meat and bread, and
several disasters in which thousands
of lives have been cut off, Hoods
and freshets in which crops and
homes were destroyed, and to these
can be added the murderous work
of negroes destroying homes, rap
ing women and crushing out the
lives of innocent children. If the
Republican party is responsible for
