f.int.a on Laundering and Care of
Table Linen.
Cloths that have a border all
nround them are to be preferred to
the linen bought by the yard. Lin
ens should always he hemmed by
hand and an initial embroidered on
them in white cotton. Ait to the
blundering of linens, there should
never be any starch used, hut they
should he ironed when quite damp
and with a hot iron ironed until per
fectly dry. The fewer folds and
creases that are ironed into them
the better. If one has a closet in
which a few poles may he hung and
the cloths with but one fold hung
over them, one will find this the
ideal way in which to keep their
linen. Smaller pieces, such as carv
ing cloths, centerpieces, buffet cov
ers, tray covers and doilies, may he
kept in boxes of suitable size.
All embroidered pieces should he
separately washed and most care
fully ironed. An iron should never
he placed on the right side of em
broidery, and even on the wrong side
it should he shielded by a double
fold of llannel.—Table Talk.
Mending China and Glass.
Expensive articles are sometimes
mended bv riveting the piece to-
get her, but it is difficult to get a
cement that will resist long expo
sure to water. Articles that are
mended with pure white lead or
with a mixture of powdered asbes
tos and water glass will hold to
gether if washed with care —that is,
washed and wiped quickly. Articles
mended in this manner will not bear
soaking in water. Hub a thin coat
of the best white lead on the broken
edges, then press together and tie
in position with bands of cloth.
Keep the articles in a dry place for
six weeks before using.
Left Over Meat.
The meat bill is the housekeep
er’s heaviest bill. If it is possible
to cut down the meat orders there
■•• 'll be a substantial saving. Scraps
of meat can be utilized. If a bit of
beefsteak is left from breakfast,
keep it. At lunch time there may
be an extra pork chop. Perhaps
from dinner some veal will bo left.
Where these bits can be kept per
fectly they can be used in meat
croquettes or meat patties. Meat
croquettes are better if made from
mixed meats. Mixed meats chopped
in croquettes or patties mean the
saving of one meal’s meat bill.
Th« Serving of Butter.
'Butter is served at breakfast,
luncheon and supper, hut not at a
formal dinner. If the luncheon
takes the form of a formal luncheon
party, the small butter plate is
thought preferable to the bread and
butter plate, which is more bohe
mian in character. Often neither
appears. At a formal dinner the
menu of which abounds in rich
sauces butter is regarded a super
fluity, since each dish is supposed
to be perfect as it is, or with the
accessories provided as accompani
ment.
Severe Engagement Expected.
Che Foo, August 16. —2 p. m.—The
Russian ships at Port Arthur made a

severe engagement is expected.

A Simple Remedy For Nervous Ex
haustion or Colds.
People prefer severe remedies,
having the mistaken idea that tha
stronger the means employed the
quicker the results. 1 therefore of
fer our favorite remedy with consid
erable hesitation, fearing that tha
reader will think it too simple to
try, though I am convinced that if
it were more often used it would re
sult in a great saving both of suffer
ing and doctor’s bills. It is noth
ing more nor less than going to bod
—a warm bed—and not talking or
reading, but resting, sleeping if pos
sible. Put a hot water bottle at
vour feet or at the seat of any spe
cial pain and give yourself a chance
to get well. In cases of nervous ex
haustion, colds (if taken at the be
ginning), nervous headache or slight
digestive disturbances this period of
rest under favorable conditions
gives nature a sufficient advantage
to enable her to cope successfully
with the enemy.—Good Housekeep

Household Hints.
Common salt will exterminate
moths.
In cleaning mackintoshes always
avoid hot water.
To brighten copper and tinware
use a hot solution oi' salt and vine
gar.
To keep away insects in bird
cages suspend a small bag of sul
phur inside the cage.
Scalding water poured on apples
will cause the skin to slip oif easily,
saving the labor of paring.
When making coffee, add a pinch
of salt. This not only clears the
coffee hut brings out the aroma.
Wet shoes should always be laid
on their sides to dry, so that the air
can reach the soles, always the wet
test part.
False Economy.
It is a hard thing to say, but
there are women who economize at
the table to spend upon clothing.
These women forget that tine
feathers are beautiful only upon
well nurtured birds.
To ruin the digestion is not econ
omy.
A well dressed dyspeptic is not so
good to look upon as a less extrava
gantly clothed woman in whose
cheeks bloom the roses of health.
Shirt Bosom Board.
The best shirt bosom hoard is one
made of seasoned wood, a foot wide,
a foot and a half long and an
inch thick. This should be covered
with two or three thicknesses of
flannel, drawn tight and well tack
ed in place, cover again with canton
flannel, drawn very tight and lib
erally tack. Make outside slips of
white cotton cloth fitted to the
board, and put on a clean slip every
week.
To Dose the Cat.
The easiest and best way to ad
minister a remedy to a cat is to
mix the medicine with lard and
smear it on her fore legs near the
shoulder, where puss can reach it
with her tongue, but cannot “roll it
off." as she will seek to do if the
smell of the medicine is offensive.
Cats are too neat to allow anything
to remain upon the coat and will
not rest until it is licked away.
