UNUSUAL ESCAPE.
Flight cf Private Serving on Gover
nor's Island.
New York. Sept. G.—Private Frank
Reese, an army prisoner serving one
year on Governor’s Island for deser
tion. h&s escaped in an unusual man
ner. Reese was a “trusty” and had
gained the complete confidence of Cap
tain Horton, of the Eighth infantry,
quartermaster of the island.
Captain Horton left the post Sat
iiay night for Manassas, Va.. to take
part in the maneuvers. A company
of coast artillery not familiar with the
prisoners, was detailed to the post in
place of the troops sent south so that
Reese’s flight was greatly facilitated.
When the captain went away he
gave the prisoner a key to his house
and ordered him to take care of things.
After Reese disappeared a search of
the oaptain’s quarters showed that the
prisoner had gone away in a peculiar
disguise. He had donned a dress
coat and s'hirt, a big red necktie and
a pair of riding breeches. This nov
el outfit he topped off with a silk hat
and boldly walked to the landing place
and took the next boat to New York.
His odd costume caused much amuse
ment, but no person spoke to him, and
when the boat landed at the battery
he lost no time in disappearing. A
eearch for Reese later by the guard
disclosed the identity of the person
who had furnished so much amuse
ment to the sentries who were much
chagrined over the escape.
Heavy Fighting Reported.
Yentai, Mondays, Sept. 5. —Delayed.—
There was heavy fighting northeast of
this place today. The Japanese troops
are now pressing northward along the
ridges east of the railway and several
skirmishes have already taken place
within twenty miles to the southeast
of Milken. The Russians are holding
General Kuroki back at Liao Yang
while their main army is proceeding
north.

A LITTLE NCNSENSE.
jdis First Attempt at Marketing Proves
a Lamentable Failure.
A well known ohiecr has an idea
that he can manage the affairs of
the pantry better than his wife.
"My dear." said he one day, "that
baker of yours is cheating you. lie
ought to give you seven of these
buns for sixpence. I can get seven
for that price.”
So the major set oil for the ba
ker’s shop.
On arriving he pointed to a pile
of buns on the counter and said in
his severest way:
"I want seven of those buns for
sixpence.”
"But”— said the girl in attend
ance.
"No ‘huts’ in the matter,” roared
the major. "If you don't give me
seven I’ll go elsewhere and get
them.”
"Well, sir, if you insist,” said the
girl, “Fir—
"l do insist,” said the major.
So the girl counted seven buns in
to a paper bag and gave them to the
major, who went oif home greatly
elated with his success.
"Look what firmness can do,” he
said to his ivife. "I got seven for
sixpence.”
"Yes,” said his wife, "hut you
have been cheated. These buns are
