in consequence of to > fa-1 tunning,
as the itpeed at tlio time of the wreck

The Princess Louise of Wales real,
iv fell in love with the Duke of Fife,
or, ratlior, the earl, as ho was then,
winui she was a little girl. Hho was
not a pretty child, and her birth had
l.een a disappointment to her par
ents, who had wished for an heir to
tlio English throne. The earl, who
was her senior by some 15 years,
was a good natural young fellow,
and, feeling sorry for the little
girl, used to show her a great deal
of amiable attention, smuggling
bonbons into the nursery and beg
ging her off from her lessons when
there was something pleasanter on
tho tapis. In return the little prin
cess lavished her childish affection
upon him and used to make him
presents of impossible pieces of
fancy work dene by her own tin
gel’s.
As they grew older she continued
to adore him and to make penwip
ers and pincushions for his birth
day. hut which diffidence prevented
her from presenting when the time
came. The duke, seeing that she no
longer treated him in tlio frank,
friendly way that she had done
w hen she was younger, and thinking
that she was grow ing proud and af
fected lost interest in her for a
time. One dav somebody discovered
* *
among tho princess’ belongings the
accumulation of unpresented gilts
bearing the duke's monogram and
eont-of-arms and made a point of
telling him about, it. He was deeply
touched and all his old feeling for
the princess returned in a moment.
The story was told to the prince, to
whom the duke very shortly after
ward intimated that ho would like
to many his daughter. And thus
the* mariiugo came about.—New
York Journal.
