A WHISPER.
Like sea foam the moon’s silver sifted
Through the dark swaying houghs of the
pine.
And fragrant with night's perfume drifted.
Wind blow .1, through her tresses divine
As she stood, with dark fishes uplifted
And eyes flashing love into mine.
"Tvvas but the sweet story of ages
We told to each other that night,
But, ah, how its memory assuages
The subsequent sorrow and blight
That swept from life’s sanctified pages
Love’s promise of beauty and light!
And w lien the moon’s banner is streaming,
Bright sown with the beads of the rain,
And the star lamps of memory are gleaming
Through those uplifted lashes again,
I rest in the land of my dreaming
From life’s hitter pathway of pain.
I see in sleep’s sweet recollection,
Though fading as soon from my sight,
Those features in spirit reflection
Shining out of their nimbus of light,
And they speak the same deathless affection
That they- spoke to my spirit that night.

Secrets of Scent.
A chemist who is nearly as learn
ed as the Medici in all tlio subtle se
crcts of scent said not long ago: “I
wonder when the world at large will
como to realize that there is very
much more in perfumes than meets
the nose? I mean scents have other
properties than those of which the
olfactory sense takes cognizance.
For example, the smell of roses,
thyme, bergamot, clove pinks, some
of the honeysuckles, grapes—both
blossom and fruit—peach and plum
blossoms are both tonic and prophy
lactic. They add to the ozone of en
vironment either by giving it oil'
themselves or liberating it from oth
er elements of the atmosphere. Con
trariwise, nearly all the lily family,
tuberoses, neroli—which is oil of
orange flower—violets and nearly
all the artificial perfumes are de
pressants and irritant to the nerves
and the mucous membrane.
“Musk is to many constitutions
slow poison; hence the danger of
cheap perfumes. Musk is the basis
of them all. It must ho, since it has
so great a quality of fixing other
odors. Avery little of the scent sub
stance goes a long way, if fixed with
musk. Do you know a grain of musk
was weighed, then lot exposed in a
room for five years? Throughout
that time the odor was almost in
sufferably strong in tho place, yet
at the end of it tho weight of the
musk had not diminished a particle.
But that is beside the mark, What
1 set out to say was, beware of the
flower or the substance whose scent
gives a sense of oppression. Nature
is a pretty safe guide, and tho smoth
ering is her danger signal.—New
York Journal.

A Discussion of tlie
O u vrency Q i lestion
by J. W. Frinoe, of
Pearson, ( in.
Ihe people ol every section of the Fluted States are discussing’freo
silver, and, after several months of dilligent study, ! have concluded to issuo
this circular letter to the good people of my county.
1 do not believe, from the reuling of the Republican platform that they
will enact a live coinage law. No more silver coins will be added to the vol
ume of our currency, except that which is coined for the purpose of redeem
ing and retiring our paper money. Now, the question I wish to discuss is,
how can we use what money woJmvo in circulation in Coffee county to tho
best advantage.
Firstly. 1 would advise strict economy, which can he practiced by trading
a( my store. I have the largest and host, selected stock of general merchan
dise in 1 carson, and am willing, yea anxious, to accept all 52 cent silver dol
lars in payment for my goods, giving as much and often more than you get
elsewhere for a gold dollar.
1 hose who have Lite cash to pay for their purchases can sec their money
appreciating in value as soon as they enter my store.
1 have a pretty line of Shoos Hats, Dry Goods, Clothing, Groceries,
Fancy Candies, Cold Drinks, Trunks, Crockery ware, Glassware, etc., etc.
Remember I have the goods and they are to be sold at real bargain
prices. Don’t forget to call and hear (lie Regina play. Each and every
purchase to the amount of 50 cents entitles you to a ticket and a chance to
get this beautiful, .$(>7,00 music box free. Respectfully,
