All lor Silver but the Eleventh j
District. I
State House Officers Nominated.—Busi
ness all Slated.
The democratic State convention
met in Macon last Thursday and
transacted business according to the
program prepared by the free silver
bosses. Nothing startling occured
and everything was in harmony with
the free silver idea.
A free silver platform was adopted,
there being no opposition to it except
the majority of delegates from the
Eleventh district. Messrs. W. 11.
Love of Tifton and John Triplet of
Thomasville being on the committee
on platform, submitted a minority
report on the financial plank, but of
course, it was smiled away.
The only hitch in the convention
was when the extreme free silveritea
tried to defeat C. K. Pendleton as a
delegate whom the Eleventh district
caucus had selected to go to < hicago.
This attempt elicited a storm of debate
in which Air. T’endleton’s friends
and the more conservative element
gained the light.
All the stato-house officers were re
nominated except Col. Bzb Hardeman
for Treasurer. His long and able as
sistant, w. J. Speer, was nominated
to till the position Uncle Boh has so
honorably filled for the past 15 years.
Macon is certainly the place for conven
tions if she would only build an audi
torium and additional hotel accommo
dation. She is centrally located and
her people are hospitable, and she
can get our vote whenever we have
one.

At Riverdalc, Clayton county,the wife
of John McCullough, a farmer, went
out to pick black berries. Her bus
band told her where to go and be
went off in another direction,* In a
half hour he returned and made in
quiries about his wife, asking if she had
returned. Receiving a negative re
ply. lie, with a negro, set out in search
of her, saying there was something
wrong. Jle sent the negro in the di
rection he had told his wife to go and
himself went another way. In a few
minutes the negro discovered the body
of Mrs. McCullough lying in a patch
of briars with her skull crushed.
As soon as the neighbors were con
gregated and evidence began to be
gathered, suspicion fell on McCullough
as the murderer of bis wife, and when
his working clothes were discovered
with spots of blood on them he was
arrested and hurried oil to Atlanta to
jail to prevent his being lynched.
McCullough and bis wife were on
good terms and no stable cause can be
alleged as a provocation for the deed.
He does not talk on the subject and
appears morose.
They were highly respectable peo

The little 1 -year-old daughter of a
Chicago man knelt to say her prayers
the other evening.
After invoking blessings on all the
members of the family, she wound up
by saying:
“And bless Mr. Hicksworthy. Amen.’
Then she rose up, but immediately
( kuelt down again.
• I don’t mean the Mr. Hicksworthy
that thinks lie’s so smjjirt, Lord, but
the poor old Mr. Hicksworthy that’s
got only one eye and always gives me
candy. Amen.” —Ex.
