Col. J. Walter Bennett, of Way
cross, was in Douglas Monday and
Tuesday.

Mr. E. A. Buck left Wednesday
afternoon for Ashville N. C., where
Mrs. Buck and little daughter Ethel
have been visiting relatives for sever

Mr. Wm. M. West announces that

Andrew Melvin, a colored man liv
ing near Mr. John Sapps, about
twelve miles from Douglas, was shot
in his house last Friday night. Five
Pullets took effect in Ins head. He is
living, however and doing well. It is
not known who did the shooting.
The enterprising little city of Fitz
gerald is preparing to have a fail
next month, commencing on the Bth.
day and closing on the 23rd. Space
lias been left for an exhibit from Cof
fee county and they earnestly desire
us to get up an exhibit and send it
over. We think it would be a good
idea for our people to investigate this
matter.

The School Building
At a meeting of the school board
last Saturday the plans and specifi
cations drawn by J. B. Leonard of
Brunswick were reviewed and unani
mously accepted.
Bids for the erection of the build
ing were ordered advertised in the
Breeze and the Leader and the Savan
nah Morning News, bidding to close
September Ist, When completed this
will be one of the handsomest and
best arranged school buildings in
South Georgia. The building is to
be of brick, two stories high, and will
cost about six thousand dollars.
Judge F. Willis Dart was elected
Secretary and treasurer, vice John W.
Greer resigned.
MARRIED.
On last Sunday morning, just after-
Sunday school had closed at the Bap
tist church and as the crowd had - be
gan to disperse, we were informed that
a marriage would take place in the
clmrch in a few minutes and were re
quested to stay. No one knowing
who the contracting parties were anx
iously waited a few minutes when
the bride and groom, Mr. G. W. Wil
son and Mrs, Fannie Vining entered
the door and while Mrs. Briggs played
the wedding march quietly advanced
to the altar where the ceremony was
performed by G. L. Brack.
Death of a Good Man.
Mr. Lovett JJarrell, an aged and
wealthy farmer died at his home a
a few miles southeast of Douglas last
Saturday night, after a short illness.
He was very old, nearly blind and
very infirm, and lias suffered untold
pain for the past lew- years with a
cancer over his left eye.
We have been unable to learn very
much of Mr. Harrell as lie has been
living a life of seclusion for several
years.
He was very unassuming and quiet
and enjoyed the good will and respect
of all who knew him.
Ho was at one time one of the
largest stock raisers in South Georgia,
and was reputed to be very wealthy
at the time of his death.
An ice cream party was given at
Mrs. T. T. Infingers Wednesday night.
About all the young people of Doug
las were in attendance, and the even
ing was very pleasantly spent. Miss
Ada knows the art of making the
young folk enjoy themselves.
On last Tuesday afternoon as Messrs.
J. M. Ashley and Joshua Dent were
■! driving into town from Ashley’s still
lightning struck a pine tree in about
thirty steps of them, stunning Mr.
Ashley and nearly knocking the horse
down.
We learn from Mr. P. L. Smith,
who has just returned from Fitzgerald,
that a storm passed over
that place Tuesday afternoon, capsiz
ing the large three story opera house,
and damaging several other buildings.
Mr. J. 11. Anderson, independent
candidate for sheriff was in town day
before yesterday.
Mrs. E. A. Brown and daughter,
Miss Emma, of Nichols, were in town
yesterday.

DR, JEFFERSON WILCOX,
Democratic Candidate for State Sena
tor from the Fifth District,
Dr. Jefferson wilcox was born in
Coffee county, March 20. LSGO. His
father Mark wilcox who died in 1891,
was a farmer and at one time was
sheriff of the county. His mother
was Margrett Lott, sister of Dr. Daniel
Lott, deceased, of waycross.
Dr. wilcox fortunately was favored
with a good common school educa
tion preparatory to his entrance into
the Southern Medical College at At
lenta in 1881, from which institution
he graduated with honor in 1883 He
located first at Broxton, Coffee county
but left there and cottlod in willacoo
chee where he is now, and where h(
has a choice remunerative practice
not excelled in all this section. In
addition to his practice he has a drug
store which is doing a profitable bus
iness.
Dr. Wilcox has been mayor of Wil
lacooehee and represented the county
in the legislature of 1892-3 and was a
member of the following committees:
agriculture, hygiene and sanitation,
pensions, lunatic asylum and peniten
tiary.
Dr. Wilcox was married August 0.
1883 to Mary, daughter of James Hin
son of Coffee county, who has borne
him two children. He is a Master
Vlason. He stands high in this sec
tion as an able and successful physi
cian. lie is a sinion pure democrat,
and stands ready at any and all times
to give his reasons for the faith that is
in him.

congressional convention met here to
day and nominated Capt. Benjamin
Milikin of Jesup, Wayne county, for
congress.
