An interesting Letter From Nebraska.
Bloomfield, Neb., November, 0, ’9b.
Oct. 29th, we hud six inches of
snojv .ind since that time it has been
•snowing about half the time.' We
have already bad mere winter weather
than usually conies in a whole South
Georgia winter. The Missouri river
is fror.cn above and all stopped here
and for a lwmdred miles or so down
the river on account of the huge cakes
o{ running ice. The prairie i- all
white with a coat of snow 24 inches
deep, and wolf and jack rabbit bunt
ing is the sport of the Indian. This
is said to be rather early for so much
snow and ice. The old Indians and
weather prophets predict a very hard
winter. Corn is cheaper fuel here
this winter than coal, so most of the
people are burning corn. ft looks
like a great waste to one who has al
ways looked upon a dollar and a
bushel of corn as of equal value. It
is u very good substitute for coal, es
pecially when one lias mure corn than
money, which is the case with most
of these burners. This Western corn
is better fuel than Georgia corn. It
contains a inurn 1 rgei percent of oil.
Coal is 'oiling in 8 Minefield, 8. D.
and Bloomfield, Nebr., both railroad
towns, at $lO to sl2 per ton while
corn is commanding only ICcts. per
bushel. The election lias not changed
prices as some of the politicians
promised but of course it will very
soon. The*railroad has change l its
freight, rates to usher in the “Era of
prosperity” by adding $1 additional
freight to every ton of coal shipped
v.est of the Missouri. Three years
ago they hauled it for $2 per ton, the
price is now reduced (?) to sl. It. is
governed by the great law of “Supply
and Demand.”
The election is over, and every con
t-cie.ice is clear, a sense of duty well
performed is always a source of com
fort. Already the aurora of the poli
tician's dream is rising out of the
ocean of prosperity in her golden
chariot (not silver) to drive out the
miasma of Free Silver, (?) It will he a
grand good time when all the facto
ries start up and all the people have
employment, and every purse is filled
with GOLD, and every mouth is filled,
and the anarchists arc destroyed, and
the American eagle once more gets
poised in the pure air of heaven and
looks down on a reunited, rejuvinuled.
rehabilitated, AI'UIFKRATEI) peo
ple. It was a noble light the little
“Boy orator of the Platte''made, so
much that it made the Big Canton
man tremble in his hoots togther with
sill his cohorts of money kings and
"nabobs.” Let prosperity come
from whatever source, it will find a
glad welcome in the hearts of the
American people. There is no class
of people in this nation who need it
more than those who (ought under
the ling of the “hoy orator”. They
are not a selfish set who cannot set' or
appreciate a good tiling even among
their enemies. They are too honor
able as well as too weak to pile stumb
ling-blocks in the road to prosperity
They will eagerly watch the sun <>!
prosperity from the furrow, the loom
and the mine for four years aud if
she decs not cast her benign rays on
them they will make it painfully in
teresting for their opponents in 1900.
Until then, every citizen should sup
port, loyally, every honorable effort of
the new administration for good gov
ernment.
Jno. It. Overman.

TEE HITT WIRE COTTON TIE
CcrtlOratfi* From Ootnpre*. Companies,
Who Soy It Is Far Superior to the Old
Flat Tie—The Fertilizing Properties In
n Ton of Cottonseed—How to Destroy
“l.eaf Fiflcl.tr.”
Question. —What has become of tko
wire cotton tie, in which we as farmers
should he much interested? Wo have
hear t nothing of them recently, arid
suppose from tins that you have been
unable to.se’cure a substitute that would
answer all the purposes of the flat tie.
We as farmers would like to know, u
wo will he compelled to submit to the
imposition of the cotton tie trust another
your.
Answks.—Owing to the rapidity with
which the crop has boon gathered, and
also to tho fact that most merahants
and ginners had already purchased a
supply of the flat ties, it has been im
possible to introduce the wire tie gen
erally Mils son. The first ones tried
did not give entire satisfaction, but you
will see from the following certificates,
that the improved Hitt wire tie, double
strand and patent buckle, is not only a
substitute, but is considered superior to
the flat tie in many respects. A bunch
of those weighs 60 lbs. and costs sl.lO
at present prices. Tho flat ties weigh
45 lbs. to tho bunch and cost $1.36. We
trust that farmers will read these cer
tificates and investigate tho merits of
these new ties. Any questions ad
dressed to tho Depart meat of Agricult
ure, Atlanta, will 1 j cheerfully an
swered.
Tho Brunswick compress, where tho
ties were tried, is one of the largest iu
the south. The certificate speaks in no
uncertain tones as to tho superiority of
tile wire tie. The ties wiil boon exhi
bition at tiie Agricultural Department,
and wo would ho glad to have farmers
come in and oxamino them. The'two
additional certificates are from two dif
ferent compress companies in Albany,
Ga.
Bbbnswick, Ga., Sept. 23.
To Whom It May Concern;
1 am now handling cotton upon which
Hitt’s wire tie and patent buckle has
been used, and having had 25 years’ of
experience in stevedoring and compress
ing will say that I can highly recom
mend tho Hitt dcvico to the public as
heingzin every way far superior to the
flat hands and 'buckles heretofore used.
First. It is cheaper, hence tho planter
gets a benefit.
Second. Wire bands will not break
and can be tied just as quickly as the
flat ones, hence the compress people are
benefited.
Third. Wire bands can be tied tighter
than (hit Witcds, jpM&s-tj^tMtiter
density, <Jrvd a#4kAm--10 V iy*W(ken
bands tliwoottrfn arrives at dofffintftkiu
in much better condition than if it had
been compressed wiWi flat bauds thereon,
hence the shippers are benefited in two
ways: first, by lower oeoau rates on ac
count of increased density, and secondly
by having cotton roach destination in
bettor condition than if pressed with
•iat bauds.
Fourth. There are no sharp ends of
bauds to cut t he hands of laborers when
handling cotton compressed with tho
Hitt device, hence tho stevedores will
prefer wire bands upon cotton.
Fifth. Underwriters should make a
reduction in insurance rates on cotton
with wire bauds upon it, and no doubt
they will when they are generally used,
as in case of fire wire bands will stand
more than double the heat of flat band*
without breaking, lioneo a great deal
more cotton will bo saved in bales than
it it wua in the loose condition, as loose
cotton burns very rapidly.

A. F. OmmoHini.,
