Washington, July 11 p. in.—Toral
has surrendered Santiago, and has ac
cepted the terms offered by the United
States, which is simply to send the
Spanish troops bacit to Spain at our ex
pense. There will he no more lighting
at Santiago, ami probably no more in
a.L Cuba until the fall. The surrender
of Santiago is said to mean that Spain
will at once sue for peace, making tlm
best terms site can. It is possible that
the campaign against Porto Rico will
now go on. The Spanish troops will
b? sent bacK to Spain immediately,
and our army withdrawn from Sant’a
go as quicKly as possible.
■Garcia’s forces aided by' five thous
and regulars, will ho left in charge.
Sliafter will he military governor of
Eastern Cuba,
Gen. Miles has gone to the front,
and the troops who went with him
are being pushed forward.
Admiral Sampson informs the

will probably save the Cristobal Colon,
the Maria Teresa, and the Vizca.va.
The wrecking outfit is already on its
way to Santiago.
YELLOW FEVER
IN OUR CAMPS,
Washington, July 13—A upojial meet
ing of the cabinet has been hastily call
ed and was held ibis afternoon.
Important dispatches were read rolat
ing to tho appearance of \ ellow fever
among onr troops around Santiago.
Fourteen cases are reported.
Pending a determination of the exact
character of lire fever these men have
been isolated in a valley near Sihouey.
Fever Reports Continued.
Washington, July 13—Fourteen sus
picious fever cases broke out among
the employes of the quartennastcr’a
department near Santiago.
There are ten isolated and confi
dence is expressed in the ability of the;
doctors to stamp out the disease.

Maj. de Granprey, the French army
officer who has been watching the
lighting before Santiago on behalf of
his Government, says that nowhere in
Europe can such an effective body
of lighting men he found as is the
American army now in the field.
Two more, blockade runners captur
ed off the Cuban coast.
Troops are being rushed to Tampa
and Charleston.
No overtures of peace have as yet
been made by the Spanish government
though there is a good deal of talk on
that line.
'Pli ere is a good deal of peace talk
prevalent at Madrid and Washington,
hut it lacks substantial foundation.
The Christobal Colon will be Heat
ed and towed to Key West.
It is feared that a good portion of
the Spanish forces have escaped from
Santiago. In many of the trenches
occupied by our men only dummy
guns were found. Gen. Shatter re
ports now, however, that every avenue
of escape is closed.
Senor Sagasta has resigned as
prime minister of Spain, and Suggests
the formation of a military cabinet.
Col. Bryan’s Nebraska regiment
has been ordered to report for duiy
to Gen. Fitzhugh Lee at Jacksonville
Fla.
A regiment of United States troops
to ho sent to Hawaii at once.
District Conference.
Presiding Elder Whiting publishes
the following announcement in the
Waycross Journal;
The Waycross district conference
will embrace the full Sunday in July.
It will meet, at Douglas, opening on
Wednesday night before with preach
ing and llic saoroment of the Lord’s
supper.
The conference proper will begin on
Thursday, the 28lli, at !) a. in. Rev.
T. B. Kemp will preach the opening
sermon. Applicants for license to
preach, for admission on trial, or for
deacons’, or elder’s orders, will meet
the committees of examination on
Wednesday afternoon at 2 :30 o’clock.

The convention of clerks, sheriffs
and marshalls of Georgia, which met
.it Valdosta this week will ask the
Legislature to pass a law authorizing
ail arresting officers to carry pistols
concealed.
Machinery is being rapidly placed
in the large saw mill of (bipl. il. II
l ift, at L’ifton, and the hum of the saw
will soon be heard again. When com
pleted this will he one of the best
equipped saw mills in tin* South.

Abbeville, Ga., July 12.—James
G. Mehegnn, late president of the Bank
of Abbeville, who has been confined
for several months in the county jail
here, awaiting trial at the fall term of
Wilcox Superior Court, charged with
wrecking the hank and defrauding de
positors, has been removed to the jail
at Amorieus for safe keeping The
Wilcox county jail is insecure, a num
ber of criminals having escaped from
it ill, different times. Mehegnn was re
move I none to soon, as wois demon
strated by the discovery of the jailer
on examining the iron grilling of the
cell in which the prisionor was confin
ed. A number of the bars ha-1 been
filed in two, anil with a few more
hours the banker would pr hably have
made his escape.
Rurglars at Itlacksliear.
Blackshear, Ga., July 13.—Burglars
last night entered I lie postoffice ill
this place, but it is not thought they
got much for their Iron hie.
Numbers of letters were removed
from their boxes, torn open and rob
bed of any valuable contents.
The safe in which the stamps and
cash are kept was not opened.
The public lias experienced no in
convenience as a result of the burg
lary.
The store of W. T. Hughes & Cos,
general i’e tiers, was also burglarized
probably by I lie same parties who en
tered the posloHiee.
A large glass was broken fiom the
front door and all entrance effected.
A number of articles arc missing
from the store, principally dolliing,
hats and provisions.
There is no clue as to who did the
work, hut it is likely the same parties
who liivt; recently made a number of
attempts at burglarizing several resi
deuces.
