THE EXCELLENCE OF SYRUP OF FIGS
is due not only to the originality and
simplicity of the combination, but also
to the care and skill with which it is
manufactured by scientific processes
known to the California Fio Smur
Cos. only, and we wish to impress upon
all the importance of purchasing the
true and original remedy. As the
genuine Syrup of Figs is manufactured
by the California Fig Syrup Cos.
only, a knowledge of that fact will
assist one in avoiding the worthless
imitations manufactured by other par
ties. The high standing of the Cali
fornia Fig Syrup Cos. with the medi
cal profession, and the satisfaction
which the genuine Syrup of Figs has
given to millions of families, makes
the name of the Company a guaranty
of the excellence of its remedy. It is
far in advance of all other laxatives,
as it acts on the kidneys, liver and
bowels without irritating or weaken
ing them, and it does not gripe nor
nauseate. In order to get its beneficial
effects, please remember the name of

negotiations now pending.
Washington, July 20.—The Span
ish government has sued for peace, not
indirectly through the great powers of
Fu.l'crpc, but by direct appeal to Pres
ident McKinley. The proposition was
formally submitted to the President
at 3 o’clock this afternoon by the
French ambassador, M. Jules Gambon
who had received instructions from
the foriegn office at Paris to deliver to
the United States government the ten
der of peace formulated by the Span
ish ministry.
At the conclusion of the conference
between the president and the French
ambassador, the following official
statement was issued from the white
house:
“The French ambassador, op behalf
of the government of Spain and by di
rection of the Spanish minister of for
eign affairs, presented to the president
this afternoon at the white house a
message from the Spanish government
looking to the termination of the war
and the settlement of the terms of
peace.”
This was the only officia 1 statement
made public, but it sufficed to put at
rest all conjecture and to make clear
and definite that at last Spain has
taken the initiative toward peace. Al
though peace rumors have been cur
rent almost daily heretofore since the
war began not one of them had the

Shipping Sheep.
A number of Irwin, Coffee and
Worth county farmers, headed by
Hon. Tlios. B. Young, have sold 5,000
head of sheep to parties in Louisville,
Ky., and have been shipping them for
some time, says the Tifton Gazette.
Shipments were made last week
from Pearson, Willacoochee and Tif
ton, and will continue until the re
quired number is sent.
Some idea of the undertaking may
tie had from the fact that about twenty
cars will be required to transport them.

DROWNED IN THE OOMULCEE
Young Man Drowned While Wading in
the River.
Ilazlehurst, Ga., July 20.—*Hey,
the oldest sou of John V. McEachin,
who lives three miles from here, was
drowned in the Ocmulgee river, near
his home, on Saturday of last week.
He had been bailing out a boat and
was leisurly wading about in the
water, when be stepped into a hole
and rose only once. Reaching
surface, he- called out to his compan
ion, John Yarbrough, Shat lie had
missed bottom and to come to his
rescue.
He was a young man just grown,
highly respected by all who knew, and
his untimely death is deeply deplored
here.
Highway Robbery.
On last Wednesday night while
Irwin and Oscar Moore were driving
in tlie darkness, fwo miles from Willa
coochee, they were seized by two men
and thrown to the ground. Irwin was
robbed of twenty dollars cash and his
valise. A desperate struggle began,
in which Oscar Moore was stabbed in
I the back with a dirk, and Irwin Moore
was shot in the abdomen. Irwin drew
his pistol and fired five times, and feels
i
sure that every shot took effect in one
of the attacking party. T!s boys feel
sure that one of the attacking party—
the one that was shot—was a negro
He WBB tracked next morning across
Mr. Faulk’s field, and at a place where
he lay down blood was found, and it
is thought that he was seriously hurt.
Both the Moore boys are doing well.
A vigorous search is being made, and
it is expected that when the negro is
found it will develop that two well
known white men instigated the at
tack.
