Questions cn All Sorts of Sub
jects For the Farm.
Brook* Connty S„l/ Supporting.
tQCKoTiON. —Is there any section or
county in Georgia which might be
(called sell supporting?
Ans writ. —As an answer to yoor
question I fake pleasure in publishing
the report o: a reliable crop correspond
ent from Brooks county, received last
week.
“This (Brooks) is tho banner county
of Georgia when it comes to ‘hog and
hominy.’ We raise lots of meat, corn,
oats, peauuts, peas, etc. There is
enough meat raised here each year to
run the county three years without buy
ing any we;,tern meat. Our merchants
ship meat, lard, corn, etc., all over Sooth
Georgia. A great many o£ our farmers
carry balances to their credit, in tho
bank hero, -t from fl.oOO to $3,000.
•They mu their farmc from sale of me.it,
corn, ctp., and make their cotton a sur
plus cron. ”
Now I ask you and every other firmer
in Georgia to read and ponder tuo ; jove
statement. 1 tbocondirion of .stocks
county one to bo envied or not? Is it a
desirable tfiiug for a tanner to have sin
abundance of ail kinds of provision
crop;;, besides money iu the bank, or is
it not? W•. y can’t you and every other
farmer in Georgia place yourselves iu
the same condition as tho farmers of
Brooks county? There is bu: ono oh
ntacio in the way, and that is tea erase
Ifor cottou. Bring about a cure in this
respect and all tho rest follows as a ni t
tsr of course, f assort, without feir of
.contradiction, that ii every county in
tfho state was doing just as Brooks
county is doing, Georgia would tie tha
most prosperous state iuthoUuion, and
oonh: bid di ii.ua.ee to trusts, ijiugioy
itariffs and other like abominations.—

v*lun of Salt a,, i Lime an Forfciiirni-s.
! Question. —What is the value of salt
las a fertilizer? What of lime?
Answer.- While salt is not essential
to the growth of agricultural- plants,
nevertheless it is foumi to he service
able ‘BB a fertilizer in some cases. It is
probublo that tho salt brings about do
composition of substances already in
the soil, and by this means renders
them available as plaut food. It also
attracts moistu’ . It is supposed by
many that it destroys fungi and insects
in the soil, rendering plants move
•healthy and vigorous. Many believe
that an application of 300 to 400 pounds
■ to tho aero will prevent rust in cotton,
ami also iucruaeo tho yield and improve’
the quality. Most soils contain muHl
ohmi lime f >r the arc;, s of the great tna
tjoritv of cultivated crops. Lime is not
used for a fertilizer ns much ns for
merly, many persons contending that
thore is no appreciable benefit to be de
rived from ib nsa It may. howover,
ibe used to advantage to correc t acidity
iu the soil- It tends to disintegrate
rocks and minerals. It may destroy iu
scots and some injurious i uugi. It in
creases tho power of the soil for Using
ami holding potash. It dlsintcgratos
,aud makes more friable, stiff soils, while
at the same timo it binds together and
puts light, sandy soils in hotter mochati
ical condition. Some crops, such y
ground poa* tor instauoo, will make al
most a total failure in soils deficient in
lime, and their cultivation should not
bo undertaken In suoh soils, without
ib*t applying to thorn a liberal doso of
lime.—State Agricultural Department

Question.-—I have a fins mare suffer
ing with “big-head” and “big-jaw.” Is
there anything that will cure hoi?
Answer.—This is u common disease
among horses muios a: the south,
suid ix lows ore She causes assigned for
it Some say it is caused by. damaged
corn, others attribute it to what are
called blind tooth, and many th.uk it is
caused by feeding corn raised on new
grounds. The truth is the veto;.nary
eurgeons do not know the oauso of this
disease, which carries off many horses
and mules antmaiiy. The disease, if
well advanced, is absolutely iucurablo,
and the animal sullerlug with it should
not be tortured by buruiug holes into
the uoso and lower jaw, apply lug • se
tons, etc., aa is too often done. There
is no satisfaotory treatment In the
first stage of tho disease, if the animal
is put ap.m a limestcao pasture, given
good care and fed well oa bright, clean
oafs, in) disease s sometimes checked,
and occasionally ev -n com;' eft'ly cured.
