The First Train Estill Elected
Child's Life in Danger.
The Savannah Morning News
correspondent saves us the time and
trouble of writing following items:
“The first train over the Atlantic
and Birmingham Railroad from
Waycross to Cordele yesterday, car
ried nine loaded coaches of happy,
joyous excursionists to Cordele, It
was beyond doubt the most orderly
and jovous of all excursions of iarge

I he -i authorities had each
coach well officered, and no effort
was spared to promote the comfort
of its patrons. The Completion of
this road is of great benefit to Doug
las merchants and shippers.
On the excursion, three represen
tative men, one each, for Estill,
Terrell and Guerry, went through
three coaches, and polled no voters'
on the gubernatorial issue, the re
sult standing, Estill, 6o; Terrell,
32; Guerry, 12. lust ill’s majority
over both, 22, and Ware, Colfee.
Irwin and Dooley counties were of j
the vote polled.
William Brantley Terrell, th
bright 3-yeur-old child of Dr. and
Mrs. W. W. Terrell, this morning!
swallowed a teaspoonful of Fow
ler’s solution of arsenic. Mrs. Ter
rell soon discovered the fact by
seeing him with the bottle, and had
him hurriedly carried to his father’s
office, where antidotes were ad
ministered, and after five hours’
heroic work, the little one is now
pronounced out of danger. Ife saw
his father use some of the medicine
and place the bottle on the mantel.
The little fellow placed a chair near
the mantel, which enabled him to
reach it with the above results.

Women and Jewels-
Jewels, candy, flowers, man—that is I
the order of a woman’s preferences. !
Jewels form a magnet of mighty power •
to the average woman. Even that
greatest of all jewels, health, is often
rained in the strenuous efforts to make
or -,ave the money to purchase them.
If a woman will risk her health td get
a coveted gem. then let her fortify her
self against the insiduous conse
quences of coughs, colds and bronchial
affections by the regular use of Dr.
Boschee’s German Syrup, It will
promptly arrest consumption in its
early stages and heal the affected
lungs and bronchial tubes and drive
the dread disease from the system. It
is not a cure-all, but it is a certain cure
for coughs, colds and all bronchial
troubles. You can get this reliable
remedy at. Sibbett Drug Cos. Get

Don’t Start Wrong.
Don’t start the summer with a linger

CAMPAIGN LIE NAILED-
Estill Not a Deserter, but now an Hon
orary Member of the Company
with which he Served
During the War.
Last week we heard a rumor on
the street, put out by a Savannah j
inan, whose name we shall not men
tion, to the effect that Mr. Estill
was a deserter from the army during
the war. We have this reply :
Savannah, May, 25 :—J. M. Free
man, Douglas, Ga. The man who
states that J. 11. Estill was a de
serter from the confederate army
states what is absolutely false. The
company with which he served dur
ing the war elected him an honorary
member thirty years ago and he is
still a member on the list. On re
organization of the Ist Regiment oi
of Georgia lie was captain of one
of the companies. He is also a life
member of the Savannah Volunteer
Guards Battalion, the Georgia Hus
sars and the Savannah Cadets, and
was the first commander of La
fayette McLaws Camp No. 596.
Savannah Citizen.
Comment is not necessary. Some
old soldiers requested that we write
to Savannah and make the inquiry,
we did so and the above is the
answer. It is hardly probable Mr.
Estill would have been honored by
the organizations mentioned if he
had been a deserter.
111 another place it will be seen
that the veterans of Athens, whose
company was included in the Bth
Georgia Regiment, hears of this
repent, and they rally to Estill’s
support, calling on the veterans of
Georgia to do the same. We have
copied this report from Athens,
resolutions, &c.
Let the veterans of Coffee county
stand square for Estill.

RAILROAD TAXATION.
There Is Much Misapprehension on the
Subject
lion. Pope Brown, railroad com
missioner throws light on the mat
ter of railroad taxation. It was
brought into the campaign promi
nently, and the idea prevails that
so far as the .Southern rail is con
cerned the state gets tax only from
the roadbed, valued at SIO,OOO per
mile. Commissioner Pope Brown
says that while Tennessee gets a
tax from the Southern on $27,000
per mile, that includes everything
,- —classed in a lump as mileage.
But in Georgia the system is dif
ferent. In Georgia we get a tax on
mileage, valued at SIO,OOO per mile,
while the depots, rolling stock,
terminal and other properties are
assessed separately. Concerning
this, much misapprehension exists,
and many have been led to believe
a tax on SIO,OOO per mile covered
all that the Southern paid to the
state.
Railroads, like some others
especially bondholders, do noC like
to give in too much for taxation ;
but Comptroller-General W right
has the matter in charge, and he is
an efficient officer, and whatever is
best for the state, yet equitable for
railroads, he will bring before the
legislature in future, as he has done
in the past. Comptroller-General
Wiight would be glad if a special
board was appointed to have in
charge this problem, as he and the
railroads often clash. J. C.
