Conference.
Iii Mclhcdist circles at least we hear
it oft repeated, well “conference is
nealy bore.” People refer to tlio meet¬
ing of the South Georgia McthodiBta
convening this year at Sandersville,
Georgia.
Wliat a host of retrospective reflec¬
tions come trooping up at the an¬
nouncement. But'a short time since
the circuit lidcr of the Eastman mis¬
sion held forth once monthly’ll! the
court house.
Now we have n station, and preach
ing twiceeverv Sabbaih. with auxil
iary services all through the week.
How did this all come about ? The
elegant church we worship in is a
monument to two men. One a inctli
odist itinerant; the other a layman,
They are both in thejr grave-. Many
others helped, these two were llie load
ing spirits. Did we remember Robert
Lockwood to reward him and appro
ciatc him us ho gave his waning life
to this work ? If not it is too late now.
But we may do our duty yet. The
conference sent another man this year
who has served us with a zeal and un¬
selfishness worthy of the grand cause
lie represents.
Has he done God’s work? Is thccn
dorsemeut of Christ who said “Go”
upon it? Can you doubt ? Recall the
events of the year. Remember when
a community of people, young, old,
middle-aged, stood up before the great
congregation and declared what good
things had been done for them, and
tlien pledged their allegiance to follow
Christ forever. How we did exult!
Ilow we did think we never would
falter in die path of duty again!
Let us see. It is a week till confer
encc. The very moderate assessment
put upon the membership of about
150 souls is $000.00; in arrears to-day
$210. Some have paid liberally, otli
era have paid less so, but they have
paid considerable and praise worthy
amounts, some fift.vat least, have paid
nothing. Hear it, ye Methodists of
this progressive period, (hut PAVIVO
is a Christian PKtviLKCE—a duty and
a means of grace, and under certain
circumstances can no more he left out
of a Christain’s life than prayiku.
What is the difficulty about (his ? It
is not so much that our people don’t
wish to jiav, hut rather a sort of dc
spisiug little things.
Brother--cannot walk np to the
preacher or steward and hand him a $5
bill, hut lie could pay 5 cents per week
and that would aggreguto $2 (J0e. Sis
ter-cannot hand over at any one
time a half dollar, hut a cent a week
or a nickel every month would more
than pay it,
Weknow what we are talking about.
A little girl member paid a cent this
year and she has just (mi-lied. A boy
paid 5cent* per week, a sister paid 10
cents per week. Count it lip and sec
how these little amounts (ell in the
grand total; and now within the few
days left bring up your little amounts
and the assessment will be paid. And
when on Christmas morning you bow
before the Father who sent Christ in
to the world to cheer vonr journey
with all the amenities of a Christian
civilization anil save you at last, y on
will not he reproached by the thought,
“and still I have let a year pa-s and
contributed not oneccnt to sustain the
diurcli built upon His death and
atonement.”
Iluildiu^ Sites and Choosing
House*
As lhe building and choosing of
dwellings is somwhat the order of the
day in Eastman, and in all other new
towns, a word upon the subject would
»ot '» a amiss, so we give the following
from Chambers Journal, believing the
article to ho correct iu every partial
l«r:
“In selecting a house, or a site for a
new oue, remember that where the
suu will shine on the Iiou*c for some
hours a day, one element of good is
secured, especially if the .sunshine en¬
ters at the windowsofthe living rooms
or rooms most used during (he day
time. After tMis aspect has been found
to he suitable, and that a plentiful sup
ply of sun and air is insured, atten
l *on should be given to the general po
sition and construction of the house.
“If the ground is at all porous, a
layer ol concrete not less than six inches
thick, and composed of cement or lime
a »d broken bricks or gravel, should
be spread over the whole of the ground
covered by the building. This will
prevent the passage of ground air up
through the floors. Air will travel
through tlio ground tor some distance,
and, as it invariably becomes contam¬
inated hv taking up carbonic acid in
it* passage, is not suitable for inhaling.
The house sets as a sucker on the
ground; and it, unfortunately, the
site is tme on “made” ground—that is,
composed of all the refuse of a town—
the ground air becomes the medium
of disease. No houses should he built
without a well venti'ated airspace be¬
tween the earth and the ground floor,
especially if the layer of concrete on
the surface he omitted.”
Public Nlcetlns.
We have been requested to announce
that a meeting will he held at the
Court house in the town of Eastman
Monday evening next (12th), for the
purpose of nominating a ticket for
