week. They returned home Tues¬

after a visit of about two weeks to

Miss Julia Gilbert, of near

days of last week with friends in

Mr. Mack Wall, who has for
the past year or two held a respon¬
sible position with a Macon house,
is spending some time with his
parents here.
Col. W. M. Clements and sou,
Wilber, went up to Atlanta Thurs¬
day last. Col. Clements returned
Friday night and Wilber remained
over until Monday.
Misses Carolina Pike and Fan¬
nie Wall will leave to-morrow for
Miss Pike’s old home in Agusta,
where they will spend about four
weeks with relatives tind-friends.
Editor Alonza M. Burton, of
the Fitzgerald Leader, was in the
city Tuesday and Wednesday.

noon, where he had been since
Tuesday completing the inquest
in regard to the death of the in¬
fant which was found in an old
well at that place on the 25th of
July. This inquest was begun on
July 26th, and continued through
one whole day, when the jury ad¬
journed until Aug. 1st, and the
case was again taken up. A great
deal of evidence was introduced,
and many witnesses examined in
order to reach a conclusion as to
the perpetrator of the horrible
crime, and it was Wednesday at
12:30 o’clock before a verdict was
rendered, which was to the effect
that Miss Myrt Ozburn, a young
woman well known in Chauncey,
and daughter of Marshal Ozburn
who was killed there in January,
was the mother of the child, and
a warrant was at once
charging her with the murder.
A clowd of suspicion was thrown
around Miss Ozburn from the be¬
ginning, and so strong were the
circumstances against her
most of the jury’s time was
pied in working upon this theory,
and while there is no positive
dence to show that she did
crime, the jury felt justified in
turning a verdict as above. M

The Kastman ball team was to

The new building being erected

ly pushed to completion.

The surveyors of the Eastman
<fe Ocmulgee railroad are now
camping within the city limits,
having completed the location of
the permanent line on Friday last.
This route is about fifteen miles
in length.
Maj. B. R. Folsom has’moved

builuing just behind the Mer¬
chants & Farmers bank, where he
will be glad to have his friends
call upon him. Mr. Folsom does
first, class work, and we wish him
abundant success in his new quar¬
ters.
Mr. G. W. Taylor, who has for
the past eight mouths conducted a
photograph gallery at McRae, has
moved to our town and opened up
a gallery here. We have patroniz¬
ed Mr. Taylor, and his work is
perfectly satisfactory. Call and
see him.
Miss Etna Peacock has accepted
a position as music teacher at
McDonough, Ga.. for the ensuing
year, and will enter upon her du¬
ties the first of September. Miss
i Etna is a splendid teacher and a
charming young woman and we
predict for her a most successful
year at McDonough.
Don’t forget to go out to the
Institute this evening and attend
the entertainment dedicatory to
the new bell. A splendid program
has been arranged, and every spend one
present will no doubt an
evening of rare enjoyment. Ad

ted.
Dr. J. H. Teasly and brother,
Mr. E. G. Teasley, of Kissimmee,
Fla., have been prospecting in our
town for the past week with a view
to locating here. They are tem¬
porarily residing at the home for
merlvoccupied by Mr. J. A. liar
cell, Jr. We extend to them a cordial

Eastman Vs. Abbeville.
Abbeville on Thursday resulted in
,j vietoy for the Kastman team by
a score of i to 8. Hie Abbeylie
boys played good ball, but were no
match tor one piteheraml catcher,
Messrs. Lumpkin and Montgomery.
The home boys also evidenced a
superior battery, but the visiting
team made n good showing, and
the game was extremely interest
ing throughout.
At 8:30 o’clock in the evening
an entertainment was given at
the home of Dr. and Mrs. K. H.
Bacon in honor of the Abbeville
boys, and all spoke in the highest
terms of the treatment they re¬
ceived at the hands of our people.
Every member of the visiting
team conducted himself in a most
gentlemanly manner, and it is
quite a pleasure to have them vis¬
it our town.
'Ehe Kastman hovs will probably
go to Abbeville some time next
week, when the second game will
be played at that place. Our
team lias not been defeated this
season, and we wish for it contin¬
ued victories.
The E|>worth League.
The monthly business and so¬
cial meeting of the Kastman Ep
worth League was held at the
home of Col. and Mrs. \\ . M. Cle¬
ments on Friday evening last.
Col. Clements being absent, Mr.
R. 11. Kelly admirably filled the
position as host for the occasion.
An unusually large crowd was in
attendance, and the entireevening
was one of rare pleasure. There
being no business on hand for
transaction, the following pro¬
gram was rendered in a most in¬
teresting and pleasing manner: Prince,”
