FAITH DID NOT AVAIL HER.
An ItKiiiesl Held Over A Child Victim
of the “Cure.”
Columbia, S. C., Aug. 18.—Sev¬
ern! months ago Mr. and Mrs. Jas.
hide moved to Darlinglon, S. C.,
from Atlanta. They were believ¬
ers and teachers of the doctrine of
faith cure. The husband was em¬
ployed as a clerk, while Mrs. Lide
did active work in faith curing.
Recently she visited a young man
who had fever and persuaded him
to give up medicine and doctors
and “trust in the Lord.” He did
so and nearly died, his family call¬
ing in the medical men again.
Several weeks ago the little 12
vear-old daughter of Mrs. Lide was
taken ill. No docter was sum¬
moned, but “faith” was put in
the power and willingness to cure
of the Great Physician. The lit¬
tle girl continued sick.
Dr. R. L. Edwards went to see
her, having been sent for by a
friend. He was admitted to the
sick room, but was not allowed to
administer to or prescribe for the
child, who was in a critical condi¬
tion. The child was reported bet¬
ter, but last night she died. Ar¬
rangements for the interrment
in were madeand the body was placed
a coffin.
This morning the matter was
brought to the attention of Coro¬
hold ner Dargan, and he was asked to
an inouest. A jury was em¬
paneled and went to the Lide
homestead to view the remains.
As the jury reached the house the
pall-bearers were putting the lit¬
tle co,Hn in the hearse but thecor
oner had all proceedings stopped,
opened the coffin and allowed th<*
jui v to view the body, after which
the coffin wa 3 again fastened up
a ’-G the funeral concluded.
Coroner Dargan adjourned the
inquest, till Monday when testi¬
mony will be taken m the case.
Die jury has been selected from
Darlington’s business men. There
IS mveh feeling in the town on
both sides. The supposition is
that the jury .ill fimUhe

t'OCHUAN MEN KILL A NEGRO.
Three Form a Plot To Ileat and Whip
and then Kid Sam Wright.
Cochran, Ga., Aug. 15—Last
Saturday afternoon about 1 o’clock
three white men, Sumpter Hogg,
Will Willis and another whose
identity is not yet Certain, made
an attack upon a negro man, Sam
Wright, which finally resulted in
the killing of Wright.
From informahon received,
Wright, who is a tenant on t he
plantation of J. J. Taylor, had,
according to instructions from his
landlord, forbidden these men to
seme a pond of water on the plan¬
tation. They paid no heed to the
objections of Wright and seined
the pond anyway, whereupon
Wright reported the matter to
Mr. Taylor.
Saturday all the parties were in
town and the three white men
plotted to whip the negro for giv¬
ing the information. Waiting un¬
til they saw him ready to leave for
his home they started ahead and
waited for the negro on a street he
had to pass up in the residence
part of town. When the negro
reached them the white men set
upon flint and beat him severely.
The negro turned and ran to-ward
town, the white men following and
beating him
When within a short distance
from the principal street the ne¬
gro was shot three times and in¬
stantly killed. Hogg, Willis and
tin 1 third party came back into
town as though nothing had hap¬
pened. Shortly a telephone mes¬
sage was received stating a negro
had been killed. Then the excite
meat was intense and the horrible
kill'"* investigated.
It took some Unit! to find out
who were the perpetrators.the Oil

quainted , , with ., the parties. ,• T ,
this time the men had all made
their escape. The coroner assem¬
bled a jury and spent
night and Sunday investigating
the killing, finalv returning a
verdict whmh
to divulge, but it is understood
their vernici was murder and that
Hogg and Willis were the guilty
