A Now lloteF
m r . W. 11. Skelton has started anew
m c \ in Hartwell. Now, bring on your
and send them to the High School.

®Prof. Hyde, of South Carolina, a Pres
byterian minister, will preach at 1 leasant
Hill on next Sabbath, and Hartwell the
same night. _____

■| Wc are pleased to learn that our towns
man is filling the appointment of Journal
ising Clerk in the Senate with signal ability
Land efficicucy. ___
A Fine School.
Our young townsman. S. W. Peek, has
a thriving school near t apt. t rgtt s, and
we have no doubt but that he will give en
tire satisfaction to his patrons.
Lost.
I Rev. W. P. Smith lost a large grey
Shawl between Mt. Zion and this place on
list Sunday. The finder will confer a fa
yr by returning it to Mr. Smith. It has a
■rivate mark on it.
Worthy of Emulation.
I The very efficient postmaster at Air
line writes us to know if any one fails to
■ eccive their mail regularly from that
(office, stating his desire to please the pco
[ple. This is praiseworthy; and we are
glad to sav that, while we hear much com
plaint from other quarters, we have heard
none from Air Line.
The Hartwell Sunday School.
| This School has been reorganized with
a considerable membership and bright
auspices, with F. B. Hodges as Superin
tendent and E. B. Benson Secretary, A
choir has been organized, and it contem
plates purchasing an organ. \\ hy could
not the ladies get up some charades, the
proceeds to go toward helping pay for it ?
Death.
WJr. Richmond Skelton died last night at
about 10 o'clock, aged 77 years and one
dav. He was one of the oldest citizens in
the County, highly respected, ami held the
office of Sheriff for a number of ycata. He
was a consistent member of the Sardis
Baptist Church for forty years, lie died
of dropsy, with which he has been aflhcted
Car Koine time.,T"~
Hymeneal.
Married, at the residence of the bride's
father, February Oth. D77. by Rev. \\ . P.
Smith, Mr. Wm. S. Gaines and Miss
Ma-ky C. Teaslky, all of Elbert County.
|L)n the 28th January, 1877. at the resi
dence of the bride's father in Cherokee
County, Mr. George Caßxes and Miss
Ann Richardson, formerly of Hart
County.
Serenade!*!*.
Our slumbering inhabitants were aroused
i by the sweet music of the scrcnadcrs on
Saturday and Monday nights. It was de
lightful ; and if there is one time more
than another that wc appreciate music, it is
in the semi-unconscious state when just
awakening from a profound slumber. It
almost deludes us into the belief that
angels arc hovering nigh—especially if there
arc female voices along.
Fire.
The roof of the kitchen at Bobo's Hotel
was ignited by rij-ing sparks yesterday af
ternoon. A few buckets of water, how
ever, soon quenched the flames. But for
the prompt action of our citizens it might
have resulted more seriously. People
should be very careful with fire, especially
during such windy weather. Everybody
should keep a ladder on their premises.
Little Bill Holland got his fire extinguisher
there in time to shoot a few squirts into
the hole where the fire had been.
Woe Unto Them that arent Casein Zion ’
Rev. Mr. Smitii preached from this texl
(by request) in the Methodist Church last
MBabbath, and it was the best sermon we
have listened to in a long time. It was
very pointed—in fact, so much so that we
doubt if any thinking person in the con
gregation did not feel as if it was pointed
ai him individually ; and yet it was entire
ly free from asperities. Ihe pastor is en
dearing himself very rapidly to his congre
gation, and our citizens generally; and we
believe his ministry in Hartwell will be
productive of much good.
Local Brevities.
Grim winter approacheth again.
The weather is a little Hazey again.
E. B. Benson rejoices in the ownership
of a tine black horse.
Don't forget that Hr. E. G. Murrah is
to be here this week.
Our new Sheriff elect has entered on the
discharge of his official duties.
Quite a number of mountain wagons
have passed through Hartwell in the last
few days, laden with tobacco, cabbages,
chestnuts and bear meat—the latter selling
at 25 cents per pound. It would pay the
people of Hart to raise their own bears.
Whenever you go to see a Georgia girl
in cold weather always earn* a bundle of
pine splinters and a ‘kerosene stove along
with vou. A brace of green oak sticks in
a big-mouthed fireplace will freese **the
genial current of the soul’’ at almost any
time. Don't forgot the kindling!—Abbe
vitle Medium.
Yes. and if you try to w-arm around any
Georgia girl, she'll break your slim shanks
with a knitting-needle!
Hr. Mathews has had port holes cut in
his dwelling, and if he should be attacked
by the enemy, wo would suggest that he
use some of his pills for grape-shot—- - now
wouldn't he slay 'em?
Bill Rogers has quit boarding nt the ho
tel and now lives on fish and crackers. He
claims that fish are good brain food.
Would it not be a good thing for some of
his friends to send him a whale?— Abbe
ville Medium.
A word in your ear, William Rogers:
Wouldn't a little whaling do the Medium
ist good—a medium whale.
To-day is Valentine Day. Green paper
with $1.50 printed on it is the kind wc like.
Put some poetry in something like this :
I'm tired reading The Sun on time,
Here's a $1.50, sweet valentine.
Some parties stole all the clothing left on
the lines one night last week from the resi
dences of Mr. John Snow and C. W.
Seidel, Esq. Look out for the rogues!
Mr. Snow says he is dosing out cheap.
Rev. W. P. Smith is delivering a series
of interesting lectures on “Revelation,"
every Wednesday night.
Prof. Looney has built a picket fence
around his garden. Chickens will have to
fiy high.
Mr. John Drown has built up a stable
and *lug down a well on his place.
