earnestly requested to come forward and

It. Edmund Belcher,
John H. Mcgill.
Hartwell, Ga., February 28th, 1877.
COPARTNERSHIP NOTICE.
The undersigned have this day entered
into a copartnership for the puprpose of
publishing The Hartwell Sun. under
the name and style of Benson & McGill.
We bespeak a continuance of the liberal
patronage and support accorded to the old
firm. All communications should be ad
dressed to Benson & McGill, publishers.
Respectfully,
E. B. Benson & Cos.,
J. H. McGill.
Quarterly Meeting:.
The first Quarterly Meeting for the Hart
well Circuit having gone by default. The
Presiding Elder, Rev. A. G. Worley, has
kindly consented to hold a call meeting on
the 23d instant, at the M. E. Church in
Hartwell. Let there be a full attendance
of the official board.
Religions.
Rev. J. W. Baker, preached at the M.
E. Church last Sabbath, an old fashion
spiritual sermon, which was edifying to his
many admirers. Mr. Baker was in charge
of the Hartwell circuit in the years 1871-2.
His pastoral visits, social meetings, and his
practical pious walk, left indellible marks
of good in this community.
Hon. Ueorgf Seaborn.
This gentleman, one of the oldest and
best citizens of Pendleton, S. C., died yes
terday. He will be buried, with masonic
honors to-day at Stone Church. Mr. Sea
born was the father of our friend B. E. Sea
born, and father-in-law of Col. J. B. E.
Sloan, of Charleston. He leaves many
relatives and a large circle of friends to
monrn his death.
Personal.
The card of B. E. Seaborn, represent
ing Hart & Cos., of Charleston, one of the
oldest and best hardware and agricultural
implements houses in the South, will be
found in this week's paper. We have
known Seaborn ever since he was big
enough to crack corn. He Jis of the best
“ Old Carolina ” stock on both sides, and
could not do a mean trick if he was to try.
Our Sunday School.
This is a live institution. There are
seventy-five regular attendants, most of
whom are children under 12 years of age.
There are brilliant young men and ladies
whose future prospects are the more bright
by having the moralizing advantages of the
Sabbath School. We would suggest to the
Superintendent the propriety of inaugura
ting in the School a Bible class for older
persons.
Journalistic.
Rev. John A. Shivers has connected
himself as associate editor with the War
renton Clipper, One by one the clergy
men of the various denominations have be
come connected with the secular press, un
til there is a large number now actively en
gaged in wielding their influence—we hope
for good—through the mighty power of the
press. We have a chaplain on our edito
rial staff, also. The Clipper is a good pa
per—success attend it.
The Convention.
We will possibly have a Constitutional
Convention—or at least elect delegates
whether we do or not. We wish merely to
announce, by way of parenthesis, that if
there are any patriots in this election dis
trict who are willing to immolate their lives
upon the altar of their country (for the pal
try sum of 87 per day, of course), don’t
hesitate to let the fact be known. We have
also an inward bubbling patriotism and de
sire to help you, and will do so through our
columns, for the sum of $5.00, the usual
price for announcing candidates.
Strangle.
Some time ago, J. C. Taylor, of this
County, while cutting up the sill of an old
cabin for stove wood, found a copper cent
imbedded in the middle of the sill. There
was no opening for it to have been placed
in this strange saving bank, and the ques
tion is how did it get there ? The copper is
so old and cankered that the date of coin
ing cannot be deciphered. Strange as the
above may seem, and rather corobarative,
a gentleman of unimpeachable veracity m
this place informs us that some years ago
he and his brother, while cutting up a large
tree, found a lice bat imbedded in a like
manner in the tree with no place of ingress
or egress. This satisfies us that the whale
did swallowed Jonah!
They Didn’t Know Where to Go.
The square was thickly sprinkled with
colored people yesterday, who came in to
cast their vote for Senator. A revenue

by the Rcpul means for Congress for the
Ninth District, and that the Democratic
party being divided, his election was cer
tain. Tickets were also distributed with
the circulars bearing this inscription :
“Ninth District. Election March 13,
1877. For 45th Congress, Republican Nom
inee. Hon. Martin R. Archer, of Hall
County.”
This piece of business was done with
great secresy. The motive is plain—the
Republicans needed vote * from other Dis
tricts. Whittimore forgot to tell the col
ored voters where to go to cast the tickets,
consequently the Archer’s bow will be
broken—the arrow will not reach its mark.

STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, )
County of Tate. J
Wt\ the undersigned, citizens of Tate County,
Mississippi, have been acquainted with I)r. W. A.
Skelton ever since (or nearly so) he came to the State,
and never knew anythin}; against him as a gentle
mail or business-man—always a man of energy, and
followed any business ho nndertook with ail his
might. Worked hard and paid his debts—novel
bankrupted, nor tried in an. - way to get out of a just
debt. Left here in the interest of his Patent Tomb
stone business, and we would like to have him among
us again ; feeling that we had a valuable addition to
society. All things to the contrary of this we think
is false.
The patentee of the tombstone lives in this County,
and frequently visited our town where Skelton then
lived, and Skelton was and had been in the Tomb
stone business for some time and we never heard of
him being charged of selling without legal authority
nor of any suits being brought against him for dam
ages.
