Awake at Last.
If we had seen an account of a com
pany, with the stock all paid in, to es
tablish a daily line of balloons to the
moon from Atlanta, stopping at all the
little stars to take in and put off pas
sengers and hearing the milk men cry
ing out “milk! fresh from the milky
way !” every morning, it would not sur
prise us at all. But to think we are to
have a “ sure ’nough ” Railroad from
the ancient and dearly beloved city of
Augusta to Knoxville, Tenn., to run
through this County, does sound a little
Rip VanWinkelish. We hope the
Chronicle & Comtitaiionalist will not
cease to keep stirring up Augusta and
the counties along the line with a long
pole until the fact is accomplished. We
are tired of being shut off from the out
side world.

The above, copied from the Comptrol
ler General’s report for the year 1876, is
a fair specimen of Georgia legislation
and Georgia justice. The poor white
man and the poor negro are taxed upon
their rags!
No one knows what is law in the next
County adjoining; almost every County
has local laws of its own. There ought
to be a general wiping out of laws, and
a fair, honest set made. It should be
made a capital offence to find one of the
old codes or a copy of the Supreme
Court’s decisions in the possession of any
man or woman, and let all the laws be
condensed in a book not bigger than a
spelling book, so everybody can know
what is law and how to keep out of it.
Then there would not be much use for
Court Houses and Jails; and nearly
three-thirds of the lawyers could be
spared from duty and could go to work
at something to benefit and build up the
old State. Vote for a Convention.
AiiKitatu A- Knoxville Kullroatl.
Chronicle and Constitutionalist.
hooking at the map. the line from Augus
ta. via Elberton, Toeeoa and Rabun Gap,
to ( Knoxville, is as a crow flies. And the
same is true as to the points beyond the
termini mentioned. Trie Augusta and
Knoxville Railroad will be an air line and
it will coinmend itself to those in this coun
try and in Europe who may desire to see
put into operation a grand short route
from the trade centres of the West to a
matchless harbor on the .South Atlantic
coast. We are glad, in this connection, to
be able to say that the committees on sub
scription report progress. They nrc kindly
received ; and the persons approached have,
almost to a man, cheerfully responded.
The shares having been lixeu at $25 each,
there is no reason why any one who ex
-1 poets to make Augutsa his or her home
; should’nt be left out. If one has not ability
[to subscribe for one or more shares, he is
not expected to do so. It affords us pleas
ure to say that quite a number of clerks in
our mercantile establishments have given
substantial evidence of their faith in the
enterprise. Let others follow their excel
ent example. A few days ago two ladies
of comparatively humble means sought the
committee and became subscribers to the
capital stock of the company. That is the
proper spirit. We know that it is impos
sible for every one who appreciates the ne
cessity which demands tins construction of
the road to subscribe. Many have not the
means. Hut there arc more than enough
to raise the amount which Augusta can
well afford to put into this great work that
is so intimately allied to her future growth
and prosperity. It is proposed to raise in
our midstßl 50,000, with the distinct under
standing that not one cent will he called for,
or one dollar expended, until SIOO,OOO shall
have been subscribed. When the call is
made, it will he in easy instalments. Prob
ably not more than 8 per cent, will be call
ed for prior to September Ist next. It is
further proposed at the proper time to per
fect an arrangement by which laborers
may become stockholders. This contem
plates the laborers working for a given
length of time on the road, when stock will
he entered in their respective names, the
company victualling them during the spe
cial period they may he at work. After
that, they may be continued in employ
ment while the work is in progress. We
make this statement because we believe
that it will inte est a large number of men
who arc anxious for work, and because, to
our mind, it gives an earnest of the wise
purposes of those upon whom hasdevolved
the inauguration, advancement and com
pletion of this most important project.
We are confident that to this proposition
there will be a ready response. We men
tion it for the encouragement of the friends
of the enterprise, that gentlemen, who do
not feel themselves able to subscribe so
much in money, have expressed a perfect
willingness to subscribe (as in one case)
SI.OOO in labor. So, what with cash and
labor subscriptions, it occurs to us that
the way is clear whereby we may raise
the $150,000 referred to iii the outset.
