lion.B. 11. Hill,
To whom the counties along the upper
Savannah are indebted for a tri-weekly
mail line from Tocroa City to Hartwell,
(ia., to commence the I.sth of this month.
What other man in this State would have
taken the trouble to obtain this long need
ed route? lien Hill, we never saw you,
but we do want to buss you ; and we here
by make you a lifetime subscriber to our
l>aper, and hope you may live an hundred
years to enjoy our jokes and fun.
Mayor, or No Mayor.
The question is now being agitated as to
whether there shall be a Mayor elected for
the town of Hartwell at next January elec
tion. Some are for, and some against. The
matter has to he decided before the regu
lar election, and we are to get ourselves
out of it, as we got into it—by the voice of
the people inside the corporation. Hence
the Council at their last reg ilar meeting
ordered an election for deciding the matter,
to bo held Thursday 15th instant. Those
in favor of electing Mayor and Recorder
the ensuing year will write upon their
tickets For Mayor. Those opposed will
write No Mayor. Those who have lived
here long know, the workings of both plans.
It is for the voters to decide, and we hope
the result will be satisfactory to all.
Mexican Soldiers.
Senator Ingalls’ bill granting pensions
to soldiers of the Mexican War, etc,, pro
vides for the payment of a pension of eight
dollars per month each to all surviving of
ficers and enlisted men. including militia
and volunteers of the United States Mili
tary and Naval service who served sixty
days in said War and were honorably dis
charged. and to surviving widows of such
oflicers and enlisted men, provided they
have not re-married. There is no doubt
that this bill will pass, and under it our
Tar-Heel Captain Peek the veteran of two
wars will come in for a pension, and no
'uui deserves it more than he.
A Letter From Hell.
Beak Hit.l : Yos, my dear friend, lam
here, and I find that there is a touching—
a terrible reality in hell. It is ten thou
sand times worse than the preachers on
earth could ever describe it. “ A place of
torment.” I can’t give any idea of the
sufferings and punishments inflicted hero.
1 shall not attempt to describe the horrors
of the place—it is not possible to do so.
It is with the greatest pnin (none such
known on earth) that I pen you these lines,
can you read? Ah ! Hill, you don't know
anything about hot wenther on earth.
Those melted masses of iron in the rolling
mills and foundries there would he gobbled
up here with the same eagerness that mor
tals on earth would go for ice lemonade at
the Fair in Atlanta. 1 write on a red-hot [
sheet of asbestos, with a burning pen dip
ped in boiling fluid, so pleaso excuse had
pen, spelling and haste. 1 find damned |
souls hero from every quarter of your
globe—from all nations colors, and creeds.
Oh, if f eoukl-mily get to sit down on a
strong mustard plaster or red pepper poul
tice—it would he so cooling—comfortable
like ! One of the providing charges sent
on with recruits now is I was
surprised to find many men here stood
well in society on earth and made great
pretensions to piety. Hut they stand first
on one foot and then on the other down
here. The devil seems to take peculiar de
light in chunking up the fires around them,
drenching them with hot lead and brim
stone. We all use the non-smoking stove
that you have heard of. It would make
you shudder to hear the curses heaped
upon the (icorgia homestead ami collecting
laws, for they say if it had not been for
them they would have been moro careful
about going in debt. They felt safe in
doing so for they knew they could not be
■ forced to pay, although they intended doing
so until they had gone in so deep, then
they ceased to make any efforts to pay.
ky pursued all the plans and followed ttie
iy tricks and quirks to avoid payments,
fe last death overtook them and left
W families upon the charities of the
world, they having made no effort to pay
their debts and save money for the support
of their families.
Hill, I want you to tell all our old chums
to pay every red they owe as soon as pos
sible and to stop their reckless way of
going in debt.

Atlanta.
At the election in December, just a
month off, wo arc called upon to record our
votes for Milleilgcville or Atlanta.
In traveling over the County', we find a
few good citizens who are in favirr of the
capital being removed to Milledgeville.
These gentlemen, with whom we have con
versed have no particular argument in fa
vor of Milledgeville—more than, it is the
good old place where they used to go. and
is the halls of our fathers, &e.; and think
that Milledgeville will amply answer all the
requirements of the capital for all future
time, for our great and glorious common
wealth. Now to these men we wish to
give a few facts, which we want them to
; investigate closely, and if wc are correct,
try and he governed accordingly; if wc are
incorrect, then say so, and wo will cheer
fully take it hack.
Ist. If by a vote of the people in Decem
ber, Milledgeville is elected, there will
have to he an extra session of the Legisla
ture railed at once to provide ways and
means to carry it hack, which will at once
be an expense of $.59,000.
2nd. The present State House in Atlanta
has cost the State s2f>o,ooo on which the
city of Atlanta holds a lien of $170,000,
which she only claims in case of removal.
The building therefore being reduced in
price on account of depreciated values will
only bring about the amount due her,
thereby being a loss to the State of that
whole amount, viz : $250,(100.
drd. The Governor's mansion in Atlanta
cost the State $100,00!), which, if capital is
removed will have to he sold and will lose
one half, therefore being a loss ot $50,000
more.
4th. The magnificent offer of Atlanta is
i five acres of the best land in that city,
worth $50,000, and then the offer to build
a State House in Atlanta as good us the
• >ita in Millodgevillc, nliicli \\ ill t)C At lOftKt
j $50,000, thereby making a further loss in
I ense of refusal to take this offer of SIOO,OOO
, more.
sth. The State House in Milledgcvlllo is
worth $(15,000. which could easily he sold,
and that money put in the State Treasury,
or in anew State House in Atlanta.
Wo have shown how by remaining in
Atlanta the State can have anew capitol
costing the State not a dollar, to he raised
by taxation, whilst to go to Millcdgcvillc
will be a loss to the State of $150,000 in
clean cash. Tax-payers, consider before
you take such a step as this, all for the
sake ns you say, merely to go back to the
halls of your father’s. S.
Accidents.
On Tuesday last Mr. E. It. Starks, one
of Elbert’s cleverest young men, was
standing by his gin while it was operating,
and seeing a shaving or some trash in the
gin. he thrust his hand in to remove it,
when it was caught by the saws, and his
arm so badly lacerated as to render ampu
tation necessary. The left arm was the
injured one, and tlio cutting was a little
below the elbow. The whole community
sympathises with him, and wo trust he
will soon he about again.
On the 25th inst., Mrs. Emily R. Rice,
wife of Asa M. Rice, met with a painful
accident in the following manner: While
standing by an evaporator the shelter fell
and knocked her into the evaporator, burn
ing her face badly, cut a gash in her fore
head, broke her leg just below the knee
and loosened the knee cap. and burnt her
left arm. Strange to say the injured lady
is improving, her hurts not being consid
ered fatal. —Elba ton Gtizett .

Wo advise all our renders to forward
their address and lit cents to Orange Judd
Cos., 215 llroa Iway, Now York, who make
a special offer to send for this sum (half

splendid number, besides over 50 engrav

practicable, reliable, seasonable informa

but for tho Household. Children included.
Most will get from it hints and suggestions

this year/ire. (Two copies for $1.50 each).
Nowlicre’else can one get so much really
1 valuable, paying information for so little
money—not .'I cents a week, a sum easily
saved or produced extra, which the paper
will be sure to help one to do. This .Jour
nal is prepared by practical men and wo
men, who know what they talk and write
about from actual experience and large ob
servation. and they can and do greatly aid
others to profitable planning and working.
Many single hints and suggestions each
abundantly repay a year's cost, l'hc fear
less exposures of quackery and humbugs
in every number, are invaluable, and have
saved its readers amt thbicountry millions
of dollars. The departments for the House

A bilious condition, with foul stomach,
is produced bv want of proper action of tho
liver to withdraw the bile from the blood,
which becomes clogged and poisoned ; and.
until this organ is stimulated to perform its
part of the work, the machinery of life
works imperfectly. The result is a loatli
iiystof food, headache, bitter nauseous taste
in the month, foul tongue, dizziness, lazv
feelings, depression of spirits, and sour
stomach. As the liver is the source of the
disease, so must we there apply the reme

acts with certainty and precision upon this
organ, it gives no sh<x - k to the system.
The disease is checked from the first dose,

taint of bilious matter. Use it once, anil
