Cry nnl l.ittlc Cotton.
Brother Cry truss, of the Toccoa Ihrahl,
complains that we did not gitc the correct
• liiotutions of cotton in liis city on the 20th
October. AVo havo no direct mail from
there, and tho Herald reaches us the day
after onr publication. Wc never knew
that it gave Toccoa quotations; we have
frequently noticed Memphis quotations on
tho outside patent hack. IVe had no in
tention of injuring the trade of that place.
AVe saw two wagons passing through our
town and asked them what cotton was
worth in Toccoa. They replied 0$ to 10
cts. Wo would not have noticed the article
but for the long list of Toccoa merchants
who signed it, stating that it is an error.
Wo think Brother Crytnes deserves an ad
vertisement from some of them for his
vigilance in watching Toccoa quotations
abroad. Wc apologize, and if you say so will
send cable despatch to Liverpool and tele
graph to the American markets that it was
a mistake; and wo hope the merchants of
Toccoa will forgive us for this terrible error.

to T. J. Ansley, the courteous and accom

A Terrible Wii.il.
AVo beard a man say that he wished the
next one who went to market and started
back with wheat-straw bagging might be
killed on the road, and liis body wrapped
in the bagging and buried in (be rough
sands of the sea where the tide ebbs and
flows once ever twenty-four hours. AVe
thought he was an awful wicked man ; but
on last Friday morning, on walking into
Benson's cotton-yard, we heartily sail
amen. There were quite a lumber of bales
packed in it, and they all had the delight
ful aroma of the putrid carcass of an
old dead horse. Tho cotton was dyed a
bright yellow, and they say ten days damp
weather will rot it off to the iron bands.

Dig Meteor.
On last Wednesday night between 12 and
1 o'clock one of the most brilliant meteors
burst over Hartwell, making it so light
that one could see to pick up a pin, this
was followod by a loud rumbling sound,
similar to some of Old Hob Lee's canona
ding. We cannot account for this wonder
ful phenomenon. Hut on the next morn
ing we received a letter Irom Ilell, which
will be found in this paper, and we sup
pose it must have some connection. May
be it was the forerunner of the letter. If
that was the case we feel thankful for get
ting off so lightly.

An old gentleman of this County on bis
death bed, while his lriends were putting
a hot sad iron to his feet, smiled faintly
and said that it reminded him of being at
Henson’s store during a drought one sum
mer, when a lady stepped in and enquired
for a sad iron. “Old B.” had only one,
and the handle being loose, the lady ob
jected to it. But he told her it had been
such dry weather that everything had
shrunk up, but as soon as it rained it
would tighten up all right. '1 he lady said
she had not thought of that, and purchased
the iron.

Sec a horse race? AVc once saw five
horses get an even start on a milo course.
A wild boy, the son of an eminent physi
cian. rode a wild colt, which soon fell be
hind, bolted, threw Jim and broke both
his legs. That was,the first time wc ever
heard the word “ bolter ” used ; but they
said the colt was wild, and Jim was wild,
and it was no wonder.
At another race wc saw four horses
start on a two-mile heat. One oT them was
an old deaf horse that could not hear the
word “ go,” and therefore got the start.
On account of ago they allowed it, but the
old horse came out a long way behind, and
being of an independent mind, concluded
to bolt across the field and take a nigh cut
to heat the race, but he failed; and the old
horse was always called “Old Bolter”
ever after.

A Wonderful Invention.
Ail invention all frugal wives will appre
ciate—in fact, an article that even rivals
the sewing-machine in usefulness—is now
on exhibition at the Broadway store of the
Wilson Sewing-machine Company in this
city; yet it is so wonderfully simple that
it can scarcely be classed as an invention,
and a wonder to everybody that it was not
discovered years ago. The invention con
sists in a very simple little attachment of
the Wilson shuttle sewing-machine for
darning nil kinds of lips, tears, worn-out
places, Ac., in clothing, table and bed linen,
stockings, underwear, Ac., in the same
manner that it is done by band, and leaves
the repaired part scarcely disccmable. The
operator of the sewing-machine can darn a
large-sized hole in a bed sheet or table
cloth almost instantaneously. It is to he
regretted, however, that this wonderful in
vention is patented and owned by the Wil
son Sewing Machine Company, of Chicago,
111., who will not permit its use except
with one of its make of sowing machines,
which, the company’s manager states, is
furnished with each of the \V ilson shuttle
sewing machines without extra price. Tru
ly, this is a golden nest-egg for the Wilson
Sewing Machine Company, and it is said
they are selling 800 machines a day. —New
