TAKE THAT!
During the last two weejes, a great many
of our friends have asked us to take *• that
Idue cross ” olf their paper, hacking said
request with the cash. Can t others do
likewise? Don’t get mad ; we only want
to make an honest living and pay for what
we get. Those who are still in arrears will
please look at the crosses at the head ol
this article.
“J. G.”
Writes an article in the last Comes
ville Reyinter, and takes occasion to abuse
a writer in our paper who signed his
article “ A.” and instead of argument, he
calls him a jack-legged lawyer, son of a
Yankee, etc. Our man “ A.”—he is a man
now —went to the war when not over
15 years old. as a Confederate soldier,
and stayed until the surrender. It is true
his fw* er isa Peniyrjvsnia%~-apeople wl*>
upon an average are equally as good ns
Georgians—and “ A.” was taken a prison
er, was ragged and lonzy in a Northern
prison, when his Northern friends offered
him a position out of the war, hut lie
spurned the offer, came to Hartwell when
he was exchanged, ragged and dirty,
on n short furlow, hut was at his command
the moment he was due there. We have
lost the Register, anil only read the article
once, therefore close by asking, can Mr.
“ J. G.” show as good a war record?
This is written without “AV knowl
edge or consent.
T,et the Hartwell Sun drive right ahead
in publishing little articles from correspon
dents, who keep their names behind the
curtains. The truth of the matter is, The
Sun, though not intending to do so. has
given Cry men full many a vote in Hurt
I'ounty.— Tocroa Herald.
” The truth of tlm matter ” is you are
ashy, Bro. Crymcs. If we have added any
votes to your long list, what are you
grumbling about ? Take the good things
set before you without quarreling aboul
it. If we succeed in electing you, remem
ber us in your—kingdom.
Next Wednesday is election day. come
out and bring up all the lame, the halt and
the blind, the black and the white, the
fair-minded men of all classes who voted
in the primary election and roll up a big
old-fashioned majority for the choice of the
primary election.
The Kussians captured Wars by a des
perate tight that lasted all night on the
17th. The Turkish loss was 5,000 killed
ami wounded, !0,000 prisoners,{oo cannon,
and a large amount of store. The Hus
sums lost 2,700 men in killed and wounded.
The Governor has appointed next Thanks

been appointed by the President for nation

Answer to Dirk’* Letter From 11—1.
Mu. Dick : A majority of the communi
ty wore shocked at the appearance of your
letter in a recent issue of TltK Hartweli.
Su. My apology for writing is, that 1
desire to make you acquainted with the
fact that your letter was almost, if not al
together, unanimously read with profound
indignation by the readers of Title Sl'N.
And then to think of your presumption in
asking its publication in a paper of such
high moral standard—of such deserved
popularity—as Tins Hautwku. Sun.
If you ever possessed such a virtue as
shame, what has become of it i* If you
have sunk to such depths of degradation as
you described, is that any reason why you
should endeavor to poison the public mind
by sending forth your baleful composition
lor the perusal of the refined Christian In
dies and children who delight to glean the
contents of that valuable paper, The
Hartwkix Sen * Such matter is enough
to contaminate the paper on which it is
printed, much less its baneful influence on
the minds of those who read it. We al
ready have too much of your dialect mixed
with the English language for the good of
mankind. Before you can treat the subject
of morals successfully you must change
your residence. As to the homestead ques
tion— 1 think that has worn “ threadbare.’’
AN ith reference to dishonesty, there is a
l aw higher than man’s law which no man
ban violate with impunity, and that Law
says “owe no man anything.” You would
like to take The Hautvveli, Sun. I
think it would be more congenial to your
circumstances, if you would got up a paper
suited to your climate and confine its cir
culation to your own territory. You spoke
oi a mail routi 'rum your place to
Hartwell. No one here desires such n
thing : there is entirely too much commu
nication carried on now between this world
and yours for the pood of the people of
Georg a. Now, Dick, in conclusion, 1
would ask it as a favor of you not to ask
Hie publication of any more letters in The
Hartwkix Si n. 'I be subscribers to that
paper have no relish for such literature,
and you know the editors are so clever
fbey can't deny a favor. Morality.
Nasty Naughtiness.
Abbeville J lvdium*
We went to see the “ Dixxy Blondes.”
in Columbia last week. They exhibited in
Parker's Hall on three successive nights to
very large audiences composed of the most
hignly respectable gentlemen in the coun
try. The exhibition consisted of lewd
songs, dirty jokes and everything else vile
and disreputable. The performers were
the very scum of creation —three men with
blackened faces and a half dozen young
Women in dirty tights. We had heard that
such exhibitions wctc allowed in Christian
communities hut our liveliest fancies never
pici-urivl anything so miserably dirty and
disgusting. In the crowd, waiting upon
tbe cheap vulgarity of the nasty perform
ers, we were surprised to see three of our
leading editors, a judge, a hnlf a dozen
lawyers, heads of families, old men and
boys, professing Christians, elders in the
churches, deacons, doctors and merchants,
m a sweltering mass, paying a premium on
the worst passions of the race and gloating
over this shameful exhibition of female nu
dity. from this county there were a num
ber of leuding lights in the church present,
with wives and children and sweethearts
at home for whom they shouid have suffi
cient respect to have stayed away—men
who study the Bible ”sny the catechism”
on Sunday afternoons, belong to Christian
associations and often pray in public sit
ting before the stage and applauding with
ever so eager an nir every worse exhibi
tion of lost humanity. Oh! the Christians
of these latter days. How beautifully con
sistent in their *• wnlk and conversation !"
.Such shows should lie suppressed by the
strong arm of the law. They are spreading
desolation over the land, underdraining all
the purer currents of society and crushing
out all the nobler sentiments of our better
natures.
Senator Gordon.
. s y\ Don Piatt’s Washington Capital of
the 18th : We are gratified to learn, from
the almost unanimous testimony of the
(Aeorgin press, that the tendency pf tbe can-
Mu for the Legislature now pending in
that State, is to assure the re-election of
General Gordon to the Senate. The South
always understood the secret of power in
deliberative bodies, and acted upon it by
re-electing its representative men as long
as they were physically able to perform
the functions of oflice. No Southern Sen
ator has greater power and prestige than
Gordon. No other man who might be
elected could hope to replace him in the
estimation of his colleagues and of the
whole country. He is in the prime of lift
nud at the threshold of that commanding
influence which nothing but experience
can bring to a membrr of the Senate.
Georgia, which is the Empire State of the
South, can ill afford to displncc Gordon.
That her people are aware of this fact is
attested by the press reports of the pro
gress of the canvass to which wo have al
luded.
Peace.
A London dispatch, of Tuesday, says :
Kars has fallen; Krzerouni will follow.
Osinnn Pasha will very soon be captured
at Plevna, with his entire army. The Rus
sians are putting forth extraordinary efforts
so ns to finish up the war before the close
of the year.
They dare not permit the campaign to
go over until spring ; for Germany, Austria
and England are in union os to the necessi
ty of stopping the war before the Turks are
entirely overwhelmed. Russia will have a
large slice of Armenia. The Danubiau
Principalities will be relieved from Turkish
authority, and their future status arc to be
left to a conference of the great powers.
In any event pence is certain.
The correspondent has omitted what will
probably be the most urgent and inexora
ble demand of Russia—free egress and ac
cess to the Black Sea through the Dardan
elles and the Phosphorus.
When *' Brick” Pomeroy purchased the
La Crosse Democrat he found several hun
dred names on the book and after due no
tice struck off every one that did not pay
up. The consequence was he had only
twenty-three subscribers left, but he knew
exactly bow many he bad to depend on,
and it was not long before the 1 st filled up
again with cash-paying names. Derelict
subscribers are as unnecessary as rats in a
granary.
