Sellout Exhibition.
The Fall Session of the Hartwell High
School ended on Friday, and at night gave
an exhibition, which reflected credit upon
all concerned. The acting was as good as
\vc ever witnessed by amateurs, and the
singing was excellent. It was indeed sur
prising to listen to the smaller children.
They kept the best of time and were per
fectly composed ; in fact we did not see a
single awkward or bashful act during the
exhibition. Everybody was well satisfied
with and proud of the exhibition. At its
close Prof. Looney addressed a few timely
remarks to the patrons, expressing his
thanks for the consideration shown him
and Mrs. Looney, and regrets at parting
with the people of Hartwell. Senator F.
15. Hodges replied, urging the Professor to
remain and pledging him a still larger pa
tronage. and expressed the satisfaction of
the Trustees and patrons with his manage
ment of the School, after which the audi
ence was dismissed.

Our Methodist friends, and citizens gen
orally, are disappointed that Rev. NY. P.
Smith was not returned to this circuit ;
but wo have some consolation, for John
Snow says that Rev. Mr. Farris, our next
preacher, is a real clever fellow ; and a
man that is as good a judge, of a horse as
John, ought to be a goon judge of a Metho
dist circuit rider.

One of the most ingenious inventions of
the day is Mason's Music Charts, by the
use of which any one, even a child, can
learn to play a piano or organ, in tolerable
style, in one day, and no previous knowl
edge of music is necessary. It is being in
troduced in the South by A. C. Morton, of
Atlanta. Read bis advertisement in our
paper, and if you doubt the claims, send
for bis circular; it will fully satisfy you.
AYe hope to see the charts shortly intro
duced here.
AA’lien Moses sent out men to search the
land of Canaan and bring back a report of
its productions, fruit, Ac., they brought
back one cluster of grapes between two
men upon a staff, which we suppose in
these days would be called a rail. Now.
is Elbert County going back in its mode of
transportation to the days of Moses? AA’e
see it stated in the papers some time ago
that next year's crop would be taken off
by rail. Elbert, like Canaan, is a fertile
land, and if tile crops have to be moved in
that tedious manner we arc afraid some of
her husbandmen will fall from grace.
The geographical centre of Georgia is in
Putnam county, at a place known as the
Devil's Half Acre.
The above, from the Atlanta Constitution,
shows that Hell only claims half an acre
of Putnam county. With a little mission
ary money it might be bought out. Three
miles from Hartwell, is a large tract of
wood-land, known in this County as the
••centre of the world.” It received the
name before this County was surveyed.
■ from the fact that it was the centre of the
hunting grounds for deer and uas given
that name by the hunters. The deer have
long since disappeared from these quondam
happy hunting grounds, and we presume
the half-acre formerly given up to his sa
tamc majesty in Putnam is also unoccupied
at this time.
The Dame Cock of Creation.
A wonderful bird, killed by Asa Craft,
of Elbert County, a few days ago. Mr.
Craft while walking through his bottoms,
saw, and killed a bird of uncommon ante
and appearance generally. The fowl x\as
four feet four inches high, and seven feet
three inches from tip to tip of the wings;
was web-footed, blue-skin, entirely white
feathered except a few red feathers next
the bill; the end of the bill square; the
upper portion of the bill moved instead of
the lower portion; very small tail; the
wings had four joints each ; the breast
bone a solid plate, like that of the liuiuan
body ; the ribs ns large as those of a small
shoat; the foot as large as a common hand,
and the legs almost ns large ns the wrist of
a man ; had nice good feathers, and a coat
of down : had blue eyes, and as large a.
those of a Imre. It could ffy tolerably
well, and supposed to weigh twenty-live or
thirty pounds. Its noise was a hoarse
belch. Taken altogether, it was wonder
ful bird for this vicinity. NYlio can tell lim
its linmey It is pleasantly said that friend
Asa now keeps his gun in his hand all day
ainlj sleeps with it at night, nud that if lie
licitrs a hark, a sneeze, a cough, or a belch,
he shoots that way. day or night. Also
that he has planted a cannon at each door,
and is ready to lire at any noise. "}’

Another .Slice of Morn lit},
Mlt. Dick: AA'ith pleasure I congratu
late you on your safe return to our mun
dane sphere. AA lien did you arrive?
Have you the contract on your desired
mail route? Have you paid up your sub
scription to The 11 AitTWKi.i. Sex and
settled those other little debts that lay so
heavy on your mind ? Hut excuse me, it
was all an hallucination or dream, you
soy. AA ell. you change your base so of
ten that 1 hardly know how to address
you.
It was an hallucination when you put
the (?) after pious. 1 accept that construc
tion, for I thought it strange Unit a man so
lately from li—oh ! a dream—should ques
tion the piety ol the community.
While I do not come fully up to duty, I
can boast of having read one verse in the
Bible, and that speaks of Withy dreamers.
It is very unfortunate for you that you
have such Imd dreams, and more so for
the public that you have them published
after you awake ; but perhaps you visited
the ot{jce of The Si x in your state of)
somnambulism. I will give you a remedy
for these bad dreams; keep awake and
you will never have them.
Piety seems to be the subject of your luT
letter, which is quite a change from your
former. You can blow both *• hot and
cold.” Undoubtedly your prospects are
brightening.
1 consider morality even worse than you
described it. It is certainly a great en
emy to religion This same morality, so
well described by you, was shocked, by
your first letter. If then it was shocked,
how much more religion !
Have you ever read the Bible of Rev.
Rodolphus Dickenson? If not you might
derive benefit from its perusal.
A’ou say you were “ raised under King
James’ translation.” It says, through one
of its inspired writers, “ If meat make my
brother to offend I will eat no meat while
the world stands.” If you will follow its
teachings strictly you need never to ask
•• Morality ’’ bow you should speak of hell.
You say ” it is made our duty to do all
in our power against the devil.” A sense
of that duty prompted me to answer your
first letter. As to the devil inflicting pun
ishments on his followers, that is some
thing new to me. My impression is that
God punishes them. 1 hold thnt God
metes out punishment to the disobedient,
and not the devil, as you asserted in your
first letter. That assertion by you may
not be sacrilegious? While ! believe your
motives were pure. I condemn the whole
tenor of your first letter ns exercising a
bad influence.
You “did not expect to please every
body.” I have yet to learn after striet
in juiry. that you pleased anybody.
•■ Whin the saddle pinches the horse
flinches.” That's so cer whoa whoa;
kicking does not help the matter any.
A on confess that you have no respect for
your late host after the irarm reception he
gave you. Gratitude demands that much
—but I beg pardon it was all a dream.
It is a mystery to you bow an honest
religious man can take exceptions to your
letter It is a mystery to the community
how even a moral man can fail to do so.
A’our letter was a warning and reproof
no doubt. Yet I contend that the end
does not always justify the means.” There
are cases in which the remedy may be
worse than the disease.
You render the same excuse forpublish
ing your letter that Runyan did for print
ing Pilgrims Progress. Some innv prefer
to read your letter. 1 consider Pilgrim's
Progress more edifying.
It is to me a source of much joy to learn
that my letter has revived a •Tost friend ”
to a hopeful state.
1 write in the interest of that, popular
paper Tin; Hartwell Sun. AVJmt lirm
do you represent ?
I subscribe myself that same despised,
degraded, shocked Morality.
