A BALLOON TRAGEDY.
CharUflon (S. C.) Journal aj Commerce.
On Wednesday evening last an itinerant
ahowman running a small sire circus show,
with the usual attractions of educated an
imals, etc., performed at Kingstree. To
this little sensational country show was
attached a monster balloon. Asa matter
of course an animal of this specie, although
not possessing humanity, has the power of
striking awe iuto the hearts of the corn
field negroes, who never travel over a half
dozen miles except when a show turns up
in their section. The itinerant showman
at Kingstrce, by an unusual display of
handbills, succeeded in drawing every
countryman and negro within twenty miles
of Kingstrce to this centre of attraction.
After all had seen what was inside the
tent, and he had filled his pockets with all
the small rhangc in the assembly, he pro
ceeded outside, drew out his balloon and
made ready to (ill her up for an ascension :
iu order to keep her down he was obliged
to impose on the good nature of the gazing
negroes to lay hold of the ropes and keep
him in position while ho was filling the an
imal with gas; but they all kept aloof and
would not venture within ten feet of the
animal. After considerable persuasion,
and guarantees of no barm, be succeeded
in gaining tbs assistance of about a dozen
able-bodied men to serve the exigences of
the occasion. The process of filling the
balloon with gas was then commenced,
and by degrees she began to swell out in
full proportions. When she was made
ready for the voyage to the skies out of a
little tent popped a little trapeze perform
er, robed iu blue tights, and all the para
phernalia of a light man. Before be jump
ed into the basket, he instructed the hands
pressed into service for the purpose of keep
ing the machine in position, and when all
was ready, gave the order to let go. All
scampered off, struck with amusement.
Beneath the bottom was coiled up a heap
of rope, and over this one of the negroes
stumbled. By some mysterious action,
his foot became entangled in the rope, and
as the balloon ascended and took the rope
up, the nogro was hoisted by the balloon.
When.he got about forty feet from the
earth, he, for the first time, realized his
position, and began an effort to extricate
himself from the difficulty, lie caught
hold of the rope by his hand and disen
tangled his foot, clambered up the rope to
the balloon and perched himself alongside
the trapeze performer. Rounds ofapplause
from the audience below greeted him on
the accomplishment of this feat, but the
trnpezo performer, not fueling altogether
safe, ndvised the negro to slide down the
rope to the earth below. At this time the
balloon was several hundred feet from
trrra firmn , nnd sambo, thinking this a
good idea, jumped at it nt once, and began
to descend, the balloon ascending the
while. lie slid on down until he reached
about fifty feet from the ground, when the
friction from the rope on his hands cut him
through to 111* bone, and he was forced to
Jet go. lie tumbled from thence to the
earth below.
The crowd, intent on the trapeze per
former. did not approach him until nl 1 was
through, when they found him still alive
but terribly bruised, bleeding from the
mouth and his hands literally sawed
through to the bone. lie was taken care
of by the villagers. The balloon man and
bis circus agents, after this, silently, like
the Arab, folded his tent and marched to
another station, and thus it was that the
quietude of the little village of Kingstrce
was invaded by an itinerant showman and
a balloon tragedy enacted.
Probably this is the same balloon adver
tised to ascend in Hartwell, but tailed to
put in an appearance, some time ago.
Mr. Beecher'* Latest.
Rev. Henry H ard Beecher, at a recent
prayer meeting, so-called, reviewed Amer
ican history front his own peculiar stand
point, and. after getting down to the pres
ent day, made the following eloquent
burst:
There is no parrnllcl to the conduct of
the black man since their freedom except
the conduct of their masters —the South.
So long as the South polluted the fountain
of justice and sought to poison the con
science of the North 1 denounced them
fearlessly and on every opportunity, but
now my heart turns to them w ith 7.eal ami
admiration. 1 love them; their noble
conduct since the war more, infinitely more,
than wipes out everything that happened
before. [Loud and prolonged applause.]
Some men said “ it contravenes human ex
perience to suppose that you can ever have
in America anything more than a number
of provinces ruled by a central and mon
nrcliial authority." H ell, in their anoma
lous condition at the close of the struggle
the Southern States were provinces, but
where in history have provinces ever act
ed as did these despised Slates of the sun
ny South ? The men of the South had
stood up for their convictions ; they were
the victims of the curse of slavery, and
plunged by it into war. No men on the
face of the earth ever carried themselves
better or more nobly. When ruin was
their portion, and their fortunes were
poured into the open maw of the war,
thev’ rose to a nobility that was sublime.

A Polk county woman sat up in bed

A curious will has just been settled in
Berlin, containing a moral worth a wider
circulation than a miser's last testament
often obtains. The poor man died, when
to general surprise it was found he left
thirlv four-thousand marks. The thirty
fhouxand in a package, signed and scaled,
was to he given to his native town in Ba
varia ; one thousand each to three broth
ers, and one thousand to a friend with
whom he had quarreled. It was stipula
ted that none of tiic four should follow the
body to the grave, which suggestion the
three brothers gladly accepted, but the
quarreler walked alone and forfeited his
thousand marks, for the sake of paying
the last mitigating honor. When the pack
age was opened for the town it disclosed
another will, giving the thirty thousand to
any of the four who should disregard the
stipulation.

This Sarsaparilla is a combination of
vegetable alteratives—Stillingia, Man
drake, Yellow Dock —with the lodides
of Potassium and Iron, and is the most
efficacious medicine yet known for
the diseases it ir intended to rare.
Its ingredients are so skilfully com
bined. that the full alterative effect of
each is assured, and while it is so mild
as to be harmless even to children, it is
still so effectual as to purge out from the
system those impurities and corruptions
which develop into loathsome disease.
The reputation it enjoys is derived
from its cures, and the confidence which
prominent physicians all over the coun
try repose in it, prove their experience
of its usefulness.
Certificates attesting its virtues have
accumulated, and are constantly being
received, and as many of these cases are
publicly known, they furnish convincing
evidence of the superiority of this Sar
saparilla over cverv other alterative
medicine. So generally is its supen
ority to any othe; medicine known, that
we need do no more than to assure tin
Public that tne best qualities it has ever
possessed are strictly maintained,
