THE NBW PASTOR.
Mstho4it Kttnrdtr.
Another word for the new pastor : Give
him sunshine in his home, lie will be
lonely, imil hi* family will be timid, hesi
tant and isolated at first. Do not expect
much wrvicc for a while, fall at the par
aonsgo as neighbors. Talk about nearest
and most needed things at first. See that
the material side of religion is all right—
the larder, the coal house, the wardrobe.
Christ first blest the bodies of the people.
The Gospel touches the physical nature
first of all. It feeds. It clothes. It
cleanses. It makes home cheerful, and
then it makes a thousand other joys. It
lias a business hand as well us a baptismal
power. Then bo neighborly toward the
pastor. Make his surroundings cheerful.
Give him a fair chance at first. Don’t be
gin your acquaintance by any talk about
ttie abstractions, the theories, the doc
trines. Don't quia the new pastor to as
certain whether he holds precisely the
same view s you hold on shades of opinion
—or even on what you may consider es
sential points of doctrine, Don't preach
to the preacher before lie gets a chance to
preach to the people. Take him in good
faith. lie conics with the endorsement of
the conference. If there ho unfortunately
any divisions, or parties ill the congrega
tion, don’t tell the new preacher about it.
If he never knows it, all the better for you
and him and them. Don't expect him to
be anybody’s advocate hut Christ's. Don't
ask him to adopt any methods but such as
the Gospel and common sense, the Disci
pline anil circumstances warrant —(live
the pastor a chance.
Hartwell Hitch Nrliaol.
At a meeting of the Hoard of Trustees
of the Hartwell High School, it was
unanimously agreed to other the School to
Col. W. A. Scott, of Alabama, and his
sister, Mrs. S. E. Capers. They have
both had much experience as educators.
Mrs. Capers has been in charge of different
female institutions for the lust 20 years.
AVe are afraid the School will not be as
large the first session as could be desired,
but such teachers could build lip a good
school on a Hat rock, if the citizens w ill
only do their duty and give the proper aid.
They have a lnrge package of testimonials
and recommendations from the host citi
zens of the South, which can be seen at
this office.
Hi'S I’rviK-ller*.
Rev. W. A. Farris mid family have ar
rived in town. Mr. F. bus mafic a most
favorable impression upon all who have
made his acquaintance. Rev. L. I*. .Ste
phens, the baptist minister, on account of
sickness in his family, did not attend on
Sunday, but Rev. 11. M. Rarton tilled the
appointment. With two such representa
tives, one of fire and the other of water,
looks like they might manage to purify
some of those who havu so long gone
astray.
Death.
Miss Mary AA : hite, a middle-aged lady
(daughter of Jew*.- w ,*, deceased), died
on the 23d inst.. from the effects of frost
bitten feet, which or< urred four years ago.
Some two years since, her feet were am
putated but failed to relieve her. She suf
fered much, but *- a patient Christian,
nud doubtless to -iar is basking in the
beautiful Light of that glorious clime
where wintry frost and chilly winds are not
known.

(mini to Texas.
Prof, and Mrs. Looney left Hartwell on
last Thursday for Texas. They carried
one of our steadiest, best hoys with them
ns an assistant teacher, Lonnie Eherhart.
AVe wish our bov and his former teachers
all the success they deserve and that is a
great deal.
That wide-awake, go-ahead paper, the
Gainesville Eayte, proposes to publish a
short sketch of the State Senators and
Repesentatives elect in I'pper Georgia.
That is a good idea. AVe would all like to
know what sort of a lot of •* cusses ” we
have got. As for our part, we always
sympathize with the under dog in a light,
and if the unsuccessful candidates will
send us their pedigrees, wo will publish
them with their supposed reasons for being
defeated.
Miss X'inn, the lovely and accomplished
daughter of Gen. .lames VV. Harrison, of
Anderson, is in our town on a visit to her
friends and relatives. We hope her Christ
mas may be a pleasant one.
New Year is nearly at our door. Then
lie careful how you date letters, notes, &c.
