To the patrons of the St. I.onis Christian
Advocate and Members gineruliu of the
M. K. Church, South — Greeting:
When four years ngo, \vc took charge of
the financial interests of this paper, we
need not say to those well-informed on
this subjsct, that the prospect was dis
heartening. I nder management whose fi

position to question, it was yet the fact
that the paper had failed to pay. To-day.
however, though the country has been
passing through one of the most gloomy
and generally disastrous of all the money
crises it has ever witnessed, and still
feels its paralyzing ntfects. we are happy
to announce that the Advocate stands oil
the proud and happy pinnacle of self-sup

week, its subscription list has been stead
ily growing. To illustrate the not gain
within the last twelve months has been 20
4H-100 per cent. This is as it should be.
and is inexpressibly gratifying to us. The
'editorial management has been an unquali

We have engaged, as representing largely

the editorial corps of tho Advocate, and
this will doubtless clict a generous addi

The Editorial corps will now consist of
Rev D. it. M'Anullv, I). D„ Editor in

In conclusion, we tender hearty thanks

the present subscribers send ns another

This distinguished Judge, now presiding
for Judge (Jihson, has won the admiration
and confidence of the Bar and the people of
this community by liis fidelity and ability
in the discharge of official duly no less
than by the impartial and dignified course
he pursues on the Bench. Those elements
which enter into the composition of a good
Judge, to-wit: patience, fixed attention,
painstaking anxiety to know the facts of a
ease, a quick perception of points, a clear
analysis of both tacts and principles, mid,
above all. nil earnest desire to do exact
justice, arc possessed by Judge Pottle in
an eminent degree. This able jurist lias
had before him many and difficult ques
tions during the ten or twelve days lie lias
presiding here, and ho has dealt with them
like u learned and indefatigable seeker af
ter the truth and the right, and has elicited
universal complimentary comment from
the lawyers and people. The Judge has
made hosts of friends for himself in this
city and county, and we have reason to he
lieve that both members of his own profes
sion and other citizens have vied with each
other to make bis time pass agreeably and
thus relieve the otherwise depressing effect
of the arduous judicial labors he is per
forming upon our Bench.
