GENERAL SHERMAN’S LETTER.
The attention of our renders is directed
to the fair and manly letter of Gen. W. T.
Sherman on our first page. We must con
fess that the tenor of the letter surprises
us. and we arc prepared to look upon him
in an altogether different and better light
than heretofore. We regret to see. how
ever, that the leading Northern pnpeis
merely stale that General Sherman has
written a letter in reply to the editor of the
Atlanta Constitution on the andvantnges
of Georgia, but take good care not to re
produce the letter ; showing, that after
having maligned the South as they have,
they arc averse to publishing such a sweep
ing contradiction from such a prominent
and impartial source. They arc not ready
or willing to bury sectional hate. They
do not wish the true status of affairs South
to be placed before the Northern people.
Happily for our country, however, the
truth cannot be crushed to the ground
longer. Too many fair-minded Northern
ers are coming down to see for themselves.
Their testimony cannot be doubted, and
already the lido ef capital and emigration
is being diverted to the South; and ere
many years we expect to sue our hills and
valleys echoing the busy hum of millions
of happy and industrious laborers. The
South awaits their coming with open arms,
and the bugbear of social ostracism will
flee at their coming. The possibilities of
this country can hardly be conceived, anti
before a half century will have passed
many cities like Atlanta will have sprung
up. and the whirr of the spindle and loom
will he ns common in Dixie as in the New
England States.
OUR WASHINGTON LETTER.
Washington’, I). C., Feb. 11,1871).
The Democratic caucus last evening de
cided to insist upon a repeal of what are
known as the test oath provisions of the
Revised Statutes, the repealing clause
to be made a part of the legislative, exec -
live mid judicial appropriation bill. Tin se
sections exclude from l . S. juries persons
who bore arms against the Federal Gov
ernment during the late war, or gave any
assistance to the Confederate Government.
This was the principal work of the caucus,
and so great was the earnestness exhibited
tl a‘. but for the late painful instances in
the House of what may be called a lack of
backbone. 1 should expect unanimous ad
herence of Democrats in both Houses to
the programme of the caucus. As it is. I
don't think the repeal will be forced, am
ple as the power of the House is. The ,
legislative, executive and judicial bill hav- i
ing been reported to the House yesterday,
but two remain—the sundry civil and the
deficiency. There are three weeks remain
ing of the session, which is ample time to
consider them. There is not likely to he
ail extra session. In a quiet way. and in
anticipation of the possibility of such a
session, however, the Speakership question
is beginning to lie talked of again. The
nnlv two names now mentioned are those
of Mr. Itandall and Mr. Blackburn.
There will not he nnv excuse hereafter
for those who shall accuse Mr. Tilden of
an v complicity in any irregularity concern
ing electoral votes in the South. His own
statement, and the evidence of those who
had been mentioned in connection with the
alleged attempt of Democrats to purchase
such votes, may he considered as settling
the question forever. The Potter Commit
tee finished its New York session on Sat
urday, and its members are now here. A
meeting mav he held to-dav. and very soon
the Committee, having concluded its work,
will report to the House.
You will have read that Mr. Haves im
mediately after Senator Hamlin made him
self conspicuous in his opposition to the
New York Custom House nominees with
drew a nomination just before made of a
personal friend of Senator Hamlin to a lu
crative olliee in Maine. It should be said
in justice to tlie Senator that although
greatly pleased at the nomination of his
friend, he had no direct intluencc in the
matter and declines at all times, and has
declined, to recommend any one for any
olfiee to be filled by Presidential appoint
ment.
Mrs. Delia A. Lockwood, tlie District s
first ami most successful woman lawyer,
deserves well of others of her sex who
have entered the profession. By most
persistent efforts, in the face of great op
position. she has at last secured the pas
sage through the Senate of the hill allow
ing women to appear as Attorneys before
the United States Supreme Court. There
is no doubt Mr. Haves will approve it.
Even it' he should use the veto power, the
Mouse and Senate would pass the hill over
his veto. The change in sentiment on the
question, in the last few years, in both
Houses, is simply wonderful.

One is a little surprised to rend that the
first railroad leading out of Quebec was
opened for trade last Monday. Quebec
one of the oldest cities on the North Amer
ican continent, and has a population of 7-V
000 inhabitants, vet the people have hereto
fore been content with ships and horses as

road connects Quebec with Montreal.

Our Tenure of I,lie
Depends in great measure upon our regard
foe or neglect of the laws of health. If we
violate them we cannot expect to “ make
old hones.” But that the span of exist
ence allotted to a naturally delicate const**
tution. or one which has been shaken by
disease may be materially lengthened, is a
fact of which we have daily proof. The
vivifying and restorative influence of Hos
tetler's Stomach Bitters upon a failing
physique affords a striking illustration of
the power of judicious medication to
strengthen the hold on life. Restored di
gestion, complete assimilation, renewed
appetite, sound repose, these are among
the benefits conferred upon the debilitated
by that supremo rcm>vant. W ith a circu
lation enriched, a frame invigorated, and a
nervous system tranquilized. the invalid,
after a course of the Bitters, feels that his
life-tenure is no longer-the precarious thing
that it was—that he may yet enjoy a
'•green old age.” 180
