The new road just opened from the camp
ground to Bowersville for the accommoda
tion of a large portion of Hart County and
not for the benefit of Hartwell, as it is two
miles farther from Hartwell to Bowersville
that way, was stopped up a few days ago.
by having a fence across it and trees cut
down in the road. One of the Commis
sioners who was appointed for the opening
and keeping up of said road is said to be
one of the men who put in the obstructions.
This same Commissioner signed two peti
tions, one for and one against the road. It
is getting high time to make an oxatnple
of some of these gentlemen who open and
shut roads in the County without let or
hindrance, just to suit themselves, until a
large portion of the County is nothing but
roads. If a fellow wants a calf pen he
will go.and build it in the middle of the
big road, and force people to go around.
Wc notice on the road near Air Line Mr.
Owens has staked off a long line of stumpy,
rough land to take the place of the beauti
ful old road that is level as a Hour and no
stumps in it. What tit's County needs, is
five good Commissioners to assess County
taxes, superintend poorhouse, and other
County matters. It is imposing upon our
worthy Ordinary to give him# so much
trouble in attending to all these things,
and it is impossible for “him to- please ali
the voters, and he should be relieved of
this part of his arduous free duties for the
County.

Editors Sun : Since you have no cor
respondent from Elherton, I will try to
give you some of the dots, so that the peo
ple of yourcounty may know what we are
doing. I will commence by giving a short
description of our town.
Wc have at present ten dry goods stores,
one grocery store, one furniture store, one
harness and saddle manufactory, one tail
oring establishment. three retail groceries,
one tin shop, one buggy and carriage man
ufactory, two shoe shops, one hotel, four
churches, three academies, one mill, one
sash and blind manufactory (just com
menced, not fairly to work yet). VV’e have
a daily increase of business, which makes
the prospects for the year very llattering
indeed. Onr merchants arc selling more
goods for the smallest amount of money
than ever before. It is really astonishing
to think that before we had a railroad our
merchants, altogether, sold some three or
four car loads of bacon a year, and then
to think that one house has sold, since
Christinas, over 125.003 lbs. besides the
many thousand pounds that others have
sold. We have sold since Christmas about
850.000 worth of goods of all kinds, against
812.000 for the two corresponding months
of last year, which will give some idea of
the improvement of the trade since No
vember last. We have bought about six
thousand bales of cotton, a great improve
ment on last season's purchase. About
one thousand of these came from your
county. Our merchants are all selling gu
anos very cheap indeed now ; sometime ago
they were high, but have come down with
in the bounds of reason. Good guanos are
selling at 870 @ 872 J per ton. with cotton
option at 15 cents, which makes it cost, the
farmer 400 lbs @ 480 of good cotton per
ton. which is the same as it has been for
the past two years. Meat is worth 0 ® fij.
Hour 5$ @O. Merchandise of all kinds are
in proportion with the above stated articles
and prices. There is one thing, however,
that we regret to see, and that is a dispo
sition among our merchants to neglect to
advertise and solicit trade. They all ought
by all means to advertise in y'our paper ; I
therefore seize npon this opportunity to tell
them of their negligence, for it is negligence
of the grossest kind.
The people are exercising a good deal of
energy in repairing their dwellings, etc.,
which has been and is daily improving the
appearance of the town. There is consid
erable excitement in the musical circle here.
Prof. Ege, of Virginia, is teaching a singing
school at the Methodist church. He is

ADVICE TO CO VS I’M FT IV ES.
The celebrated physician, Dr. Paul Mc
ineyer. gives the following valuable sugges
tions to persons suffering from lung affec
tions t “ The patient must, with scrupu
lous conscientiousness insist upon breath
ing fresh air. and must remember that the
air of closed rooms is always more or less
had. * * * No man, however
uncleanly, would drink muddy, dirty wa
ter. A party which occupies a room for
hours, breathing the same air. might he
compared to a party of bathers drinking
the water in Which they bathe. The pa
tient must keep the window of his bed
room open. Night air is fresh air without
daylight. In close, crowded rooms, the
patient suffering from lung complaints
breathes consumptively." By taking these
precautions and using Dr. Pierce's Golden
Medical Discovery and Pleasant Purga
tive Pellets, fully one half of the cases
of lung complaints would be cured in
six months. For cough anil irritation
of the lungs do not always indicate
the presence of consumption although it
may result in that disease, and if consump
tion has already become deeply seated in
the system, tins is the most efficient course
of treatment that can be pursued outside
of any institution that provides special fa
cilities for the treatment of this disease.
Dr. Pierce’s celebrated Invalids’ Hotel is
such an institution. Send stamp for des

Brown—Williams : Married, on the
night of the 2<lth ult., by Rev. Parks, at
the residence of the bride's ■ father. Mr.
Floyd Brown and Miss Tcxana Williams.
One day last week, a young lady in this
community saw a nice pair of handenfla.
and concluded to see how they would feel
on her wrists, and accordingly proceeded
to try them on—when, to her great sur
prise. they locked themselves, and she was
mmole to unhitch herself until they were
tiled off—the key being sereral miles a way.
We are having a lively time now in the
guano business. Wagons are pouring in
upon ns something like they did ill Augus
ta in ye good olden times.
Two of the handsomest signs we have
swung out. The one over their store door
looks so city like that a fellow can hardly
resist going in arid spending some of his
change, and when he gets inside and sees
tho prices he is sure to trade. The large
sign on their guano house is very attrac
tive. and does not fail to draw tho wagons
around to the platform to be loaded.
We have just heard a good thing on a
man across the County lino (in Franklin).
He had a slight misunderstanding with his
wife, and after giving her a sound thrashing
resolved to leave the country—that is to
gA down in Elbert County. He met a
neighbor and told Inm what he had, dong,
and that he was then on tiis way to huf
father’s grave to build a |>en over it. after
which he was going off, perhaps never to
return. After staying away several days,
remorse took hold upon him and lie re
turned to his old neighborhood. He was
aiijpffus'lo learn how things were about
home, and if there was any chance to have
his wile reconciled to him and desired to
live together as man anil wife, and was
willing on his part to bind himself to culti
vate n more harmonious disposition. He
accordingly went before n Justice of the
Peace (who, by-the-wav is not destitute of
humor) and made affidavit as to his pcace
funftrentions and bound hituselfin writing
to make such a quantity of corn and other
necessary provisions for a comfortable liv
ing, wuiclj agreement was duly witnessed
ami scaled. The squire told him that in
-uch cases the law was very strict, and
that he would not he safe in permitting
them to live together again without some
assurauce that lie could and intended to
support his wife, and that, since he had
lorn himself so abruptly away, it was
necessary that he should marry them over.
The wife was then brought up, and the
squire went through with the ceremony
with ns much dignity as was ever displayed
by any officer or clergyman. They are
living together now all rferenely. and so
far as vve know our doubly married man
is doing his duty towards supporting his
family, for only last week he was buying
flour and bacon from Schaefer on credit
with coiton option.
Carnesvillc is getting her goods shipped

we will be governed regular town fashion.

Lots are going freely here. Every lot on

A clever man representing a mammoth

good bills everywhere he stopped. He
made a plea-ant call at Bowersville, and
regretted that he didn't have time this
trip to call on his friends in Hartwell. He
will see them before long, however, and
they may depend on getting everything
down at rock bottom. If there is a more

West Row or**ll lc.
As wc have not seen any communication
from our modest little town, perhaps you
would like to hear from us.
West Bowersville derives its name from
"Uncle” Job Bowers, its founder—like
Koine, from Romulus. Uncle Job is now
about liis seventy-sixth year, yet the pow
ers of his mind remain unimpaired. No
man in this section has done so much as he
for the cause of education and improve
ment. In all his concerns, both public
and private, he has shown himself to be a
man of more than ordinary abilities, great
application and uncommon integrity. He
has been a father to him that was ready to
perish, and the distressed have never cried
unto him in rain. His children, like him
setf.'aro generous, kind-hearted, benevo
lent, intelligent anil enterprising. Most of
them arc citizens of this place, ami are
doing well. A town composed of such
people is bound to prosper. Though there
is not much wealth here, yet we are grad
ually improving. Our people are out of
debt, ana live within their income, con
tented and happy.
West Bowersville is situated on the E.
A. L. R. It., near the line of Franklin and
Hart ; the line runs through the eastern
part of the village, so that some of its cit
izens are in Hart, hut most in Franklin.
It is 9 miles east of Carncsville and 11
miles from Hartwell. It is the most con
venient shipping point for the Carnesvillc
merchants. Their goods can be delivered
here as cheap as at.Toccoa, and only nine
miles for w agon conveyance. I cannot sec
why self-interest does not prompt them to
ship here.

is purchasing Dale's HoNky of Hoke-
IIOUND AND Tak, and recovers so rapidly
that there is no necessity for calling in a
physician. Again, the reason Dr. P.. on
th street, is having so many patients is
ow ing to the frankness he adopted in pre
scribing in every case of Go ghs. Colds,
etc., a bottle of Hales Honey of Hokk-
HoUJfD aSd Tar. and finding it success
ful. he lias concluded in future that a) I his
patients, when troubled with any disease
of the lungs, shall immediately commence
taking Hale's Honey of Hokehound
and Tak.”
The druggist’s advice ’has snapped, and
the almost discouraged physician now is
considered a successful practitioner. His
claims are based upon llic virtues of the
medicine he adopts, which in all cases is
Dale's iionky ok Horehound and Tak.
