In accordance with resolution passed
at the agricultural meeting last Sales
day, the farmers of the county are
earnestly requested to send communi
cations relating to agricultural matters
to the Secretary of Hart County Agri
cultural Society. Send them in any
shape you please, and if necessary they
will be corrected or arranged in any
way you desire.
llaiit Agricultural Society.
Minutes of a regular meeting of the
Hart County Agricultural Society, held
in Hartwell, Ga., July Ist, 1879:
The meeting was called to order by
Jno. G. McCurry, Vice-President of
the Society.
Read minutes of last meeting, which
were adopted.
There were four quarts of buckwheat
and for distribution, which were drawn
by the following members: E. Chap
man, F. S. Roberts, B. D. Johnson,
Jno. A. Johnson.
Called for reports of experiments
from seeds received from Agricultural
Department at Washington ns follows :
W. G. W. White exhibited a bunch
of white bearded winter wheat, of
which he said : I like this wheat, very
much ; if it was not for the beard on it
would like it much better. I did not
get it sowed until the sth of December
last, and I cut it the 23d of June. Do
not know the yield I made from the
quart; will report it when I have it
threshed. I cultivated it in the ordi
nary way, gave it rather better atten
tion, as I manured it well and planted
it in my garden.
F. S*. Roberts said: I sowed some
■of the same kind of wheat year before
last, and sowed it again last December,
and this year I made 13 good shocks
from it. It is a good wheat, and I be
lieve will do well for this country. 1
believe so strongly ui it, that I intend
to sow it again. I also received some
Hebron potatoes; drew them in March
last; planted them on the 19th day ol
March. The 12th of May was my wife’s
birthday, and we went in the garden
to gather all the early vegetables we
could for that occasion and gathered
some of these potatoes, which then
were as large as guinea eggs. They
grew to be very large and fine. They
are a white mealy potato, the best I
ever saw. At same time I drew a sack
of valentine beans. 1 planted them
and they matured in 30 days—-they
did well fine. 1 alsogoCsome
watermelon seed, which I planted, and
from the outlook now they will be fine.
Question : How far is your melon patch
from your house ? Answer: It is close
to my house—in sight, where we can
watch it. I have no dog, if you want
to hunt up my patch you are welcome.
Jno. A. Johnson said: I drew a
sack of red rust proof oats, which I
sowed last fall. They came up very
well but the hot weather killed them
out some, but what few were left did
very well; my horses got in them one
night and ate of! many of the heads ;
i cannot tell much about them; but
■what few of them are left are very fine
—they came in very forward and were
well headed. I tliink they will suit
this country very well.
Win. 11. Scarliorough said: I re
ceived two watermelon seed from this
society year before last, which I took
home and planted. Six melons came
on the vine from those two seeds. The
least one of them would have made
two men a mess, and the heaviest one
weighed 37$ pounds. This was last
year—don’t know the name of them.
The seed were black, and as good meat
as I ever tasted. I planted them again
this year and they are tine.
Motion made, That Mr. Scarborough
bring a sample of his melons to our
next meeting in August, which was
unanimously carried.
Motion made. That in addition to
Mr. Scarborough’s sample of melons
that every member of the society that
has a melon patch biing in a sample
from the same to our next meeting so
their relative merits can be tested,
which was also unanimously carried by
a rising vote.
The following resolution was unani
mously carried : Whereas The Hart
■well Sun has kindly given a space in
its valuable columns to this society for
the purpose of publishing matters of
interest relating to the society, and to
the farmers generally to be edited by
Secretary of the society ; and whereas,
the Secretary states that he, being no
tanner, does not feel competent of him
self to run and edit said column, there
fore it is
Resolved, That the members of this
society will do all in their power to aid
the Secretary in running the Agricul
tural Department of The Hartwell
SrN, and we hereby agree to give our
entire and active support to said work,
by sending communications each week
from our respective sections on all
topics of interest connected with the
parposes of this society.
Adjourned to next regular meeting in
August. C. W. Seidell, Secretary.
The more importance a man attaches
to his own views, the more bigotted he
becomes; and the more he argues the
more firmly is he convinced he is right.
To kill ofl such meo, hold no argument
with them and treat their views with cold
indifference, and when they see the world
moving on quietly without them and feel
their unimportance, they will nurse their
wrath in silence and go down to their
graves unnoticed.
