Traveling on a Hjmtt.
Zhtroit Frm rrms.
Soou nOler Circuit Court Commission
er Randall bad got seated in his office
yesterday raorniug, there entne a steady
tramp, tramp, down the hall, and a
solid, hearty voice led off with :
*• Third’ll*lml that I* Wmrthan day,
And by faith wi> shall aan It a far,
For mtr Father wait* over the a ay,
To pro|iar "* •"
Good morning, sir, I’m getting on to
Nebraska."
* This isn’t the route," replied the
Commissioner, as he looked up.
“ 1 know it, sir ; but I’m doing a lit
tle singing and ooHccting a little money
to help pay my way.”
* Wliat do you sing?"
“ The Sweet By and By.” That’s
any cait, and it nas taken well so far.
i "We aliall aing on that beautiful ahorr,
The melodioua aoinja ——
“ Been traveling on that hymn dear
from Providence, and it has struck ’em
every time.
“We don’t think much of it out
west here" remarked the Commissioner.
‘•Youdon’t! Why, there’s nothing
like it! IT I had a brother and he was
-n blamed heathen, and that hymn did
aot melt him right down and make
him confess to every mean not of his
life. I'd disown him! Can Michigan
people be worse than heathens?”
•• Ami our npirit* nhall Morrow no nr,

- “ I think you'll find that our people
prefer something lively, instead of
melting. We are not much ou the melt

“ now sing the “ £jfveet By and

■ n the desk.
“ Don't.”
“ lint I will. You’ve never beard it
Hung as it should be. Why, man, I cut
■ across a corner of Connecticut in March
and hardened old sinners followed me
for miles and miles and cried like cliil
-dren! In one case I went twenty
miles to sing it to a backslider on his
dying bed.”
“ Did it finish him?”
“No, sir! lie got well. Why,
•when I got into Canada they turned
-out as if I had been a circus.

“ Bav, what do you charge not to
sing it?” interrupted the Commissioner.
“ As I told yon before, we want some
thing out this way more on the order
of ‘ Old Dan Tucker.’ with a piccolo
accompaniment.”
“ I don’t know nothing about the
Tucker family, nor. nothing about pic
colos. I’m square up and down on the
‘ Sweet By and By.’ It fits me. We
sing right up together like twins. I’ll
Jiing it and collect ten cents. Ready ;
now—.”
“ Here's a quarter not to sing it.”
“ Say,” said the man after a long
pause. “ I won’t take it! No, sir.
I’m traveling on a gait of my own.
My particular line is the "Sweet By
and By,’ as I may have incidentally
mentioned before. I’ve got the air
right down fine, and I can knock the
socks otf any church choir in America
on the chorus. Good day, sir! I
might, sell my vote on a pinch, but I
can’t be bribed to give my hymn the
cold shake.

And he never halted nor looked
around although the Commissioner hit
him in the back with a quarter.
A Strange Form of Luuacr.
There are in the asylum at Milledge
ville two singular cases of persons suf
: lering from lunacy. One of them is
.an old man, the other a boy sixteen
3'cars of age. Being violent at times
these two unfortunates are confined in
-separate cells, the floors of which are
of thick Georgia pine, the walls of
*brick and two feet thick, cemented on
the inside. Strange as it may seem,
two or three nights since, the boy pick
ed splinters from the floor, and with
them—in oue night—picked an open
ing through the wall, large enough to
admit his body, lie was caught half
way out of the hole. There are upon
the wall three places which has been
repaired, all opened in the same way.
The old man keeps himself perfectly
naked. lie, too, has picked through
the walls in the same manner. The
nails from his fingers are worn away,
and he has but two teetli li ft in his'
head, the others having been broken
out in his efforts to draw nails from the
floor after he had picked the wood from
around them. The holes were all made
in the walls in one night with splinters
obtained from the floor.
That the greatest ingenuity should
be displayed in the invention of ma
chinery to economize labor is at once
natural and creditabk*. but we did not
anticipate that the builder of the future
would be called upon to fit a mechani
cal watch-dug to the street-door to guard
the house he may be required to con
struct. Most persons are nware that,
hy introducing a flame of gas into nn
open tube, whether of metal or glass,
the tube will sonnd; in fact, we might
easily produce singing flames. There
are silent speaking-tubes—that is to
say, tubes that, under ordinary circum
stances, do not utter a sound, but if a
door be opened, a draught is created,
then the glass vibrates, and the most
startling noises result. A glass
of this description has been contrived
in which, when a jet of gas burns, the
sound of a dog barking is produced,
should the street-door be opened. Thus
may tlie house be guarded by a me
chanical Watch-dog.
