Next Monday will be the Colored
people’s day at the Augusta expo
sition, and it is estimated that the
number will reach 10.000,
Miss Ethel IngalL, a daughter of
Senator Ingalls, is going to take
charge ol the Washington society
column of a New York newspaper
She st ys she wants to make money
in order to buy her father a new
library in the place of the one that
Was burned.
Up to this date forty-four babies,
two gas wells, a mountain and a
new variety of apples have been
named for Harrison. At this rate
there is likely to ho considerable
confusion before Harrison makes
way for his successor. Why not
give Levi Morton a share ol the
Illinois?
The largest und most fruitful
gourd vine yet on record is reported
as having been grown this year by
Mr. Frank Burton, a few miles from
Oglethorpe. From it has been
gathered one bundled and thirty-six
water gourds with handles averaging
eighteen inches, and besides these
were fifteen or twenty gourds broken
before they were ripe.
“Do not spit your snuff and to
bacco on the stove, and neither be
hind the seats. No loafers is al
lowed in here, - all on the outside.
And no boys at all, only those who
have business here. And do not lie
on the seats.’' This printed notice
was posted in the depot at Griffin
by the porter, and brought to Ma
con by a gcnlleman who thought it
too good to be kept in Griffin.—Ma

THE CANDIDATE.
Mother, who travels our road,so late?
Hush, my child, ’tia the candidate.
Fit examplo of human woes,
Early he comes and late he goes,
lie greets the women with courtly
graeo,
lie kisses the baby’s dirty face;
lie calls to the fence the farmer at
work,
He bores the merchant, he bores the
clork.
Tbo-J hx'C W'»- '****'■'*«»»% U rings
He greets; and this is the song he
sings:
•‘Howdy, howdy, how d’ye you do,
How is your wile and how are you ?
Ah! it fits my fists as no other can
The hornoy hand of the working
man.”
Charley, who is that at the gate ?
Hide, my love, it’s the candidate.
Charley, why can’t ho work like you,
Has he nothing uta.ll at home to do?
My dear, whenever a man is down,
Crop in the grass and laborers gone
to town.
Too plain to preach and too proud to
Deg,
Too timid to plough and too lazy to
dig,
Then over his horse his legs he flings
And to the dear people this song ne
sings:
“Howdy, howdy, how d'ye you do,
How is your wife and how are you ?
All! it fits my lists as no other can
The homey bands of the working
man.”
Brother, who work early and late?
Ask these things of the candidate.
What is his record, how does he
stand
About Indepembntisra, matters not
his hand.
Be it hard or soft, so it is not prone
To close over money not Ins own.
Has he in view some lively plan
To help public sclools and the work
ing man ?
Cheer such a man till the welkin
rings,
Join in the chorus while he sings:
“Howdy, howdy, how d'ye you do.
How is your wife and how are you ?
Ah! it fits my fists as no other can
The honest hand of the working
man.”
