VOL II,
HON., JAMES H.BLOUNT,
In a letter on “The VV ntch Dogs of
the House,” Congressman Amos J.
Cummings bus this to say of Hon.
jmiies II. Blotmt:
Another well-seasoned ami mag
nificent watch-dog on behalf of pub
lic interest is James.II. Blount, oi
Georgia, and he is as b'icuat as the
pronunciation of his name. He is
both broad-shouldered and broad
beaded. In looks and disposition
there is much of the bulldog about
him. He has an. honest bark—one
that attracts the attention of the
House. Up to ail the tricks and
traps oi'le^ialaf.ion. bo is never mis
leading in his cry. He winds a job
as if by intuition. His suspicion
4 )nec aroused be promptly show? bis
iteet’n. When his fangs are fastened j
upon the corrupt measure ho never
weakens bis hold until he has shaken
til© life out of it. Ho fights without
fear or favor. T'ho warmest person
al friends cannot swerve'-him from
the Hue of duty. Tho Huguenot
map coax and thr Puritan threaten
him, but the bravo old d<»g will bay
defiance to both. Mr. Blount has
thick gray hair and a smooth shaven
face. His face indicates true Gcor-.
Eo is born, and
has Georgia manners, a Georgia ac
cent and Georgia ideas. His eyes
are blue and his face full and io
dised to sallow ness. He speaks
deliberately and with a somewhat
thickened enunciation, lie wears
no cuffs and never becomes thorough
ly aroused until he palls down his
wristbands. There is no posing for
effect., Tie never tries to adorn his
aemxmeca y H'b

oiotal. He deals directly with facts,
and always has the figures to sus
tain them. An adept in parliament
ary law, ho is frequently called to
the chair. As a presiding officer he
is pre-emine ntly co n sow ativ e,
You will never get a decision from
him upon any abstract point of or
der until he has thoroughly exam
ined tho julett. Ho wears steel
framed spectacles, but never wears
them when addoeasing the House.
Mr. Blount has been a congressman
sixteen consecutive years. Ho
enjoys next to the shortest biography
in tho Congressional Directory. It
does not in form its readers Hat its
subject was a brave and efficient
soldier in the Confederate army.
He seems to fill the ideal of his
constituents* His claims miomina
lion and re-election are never con
vested. .No one apparently dreams
of voting against him. Hot'.no in
twenty turns out to vote when he is
in the field as everybody ackr.owl
Macon district, lie honors
people who honor him. Long may
his bark echo in the lobbies of tao
