JASPER LETTER
The fire has been putting in some
faithful work in our county. The
last side of the square being ; con.
Burned on tho night of the 15th
nstant. There is not a vacant bus
iness house in town, and as the
town authorities prohibit the erec
iting ,ol any buildings unless of
brick, business bouses go up slow
ly. There is a strong probabiity
that the boom will strike us with
renewed force. Monticello ought to
be one of the most thriving towns
in Middle Georgia, and will in the
rot distant future, be a place of note
We are now looking for a railroad
from this place to Griffin, and then
there opens up the coal beds of
Alabama, and through the net work
of the East Tennessee R. R., a direct
outlet will be had to any point. Wha^
say you to moving Eatonton over?
Our people are orderly and social
and will give you a warm welcome
We have one of the best school
teachers in the State a; d the good
partis, he is so in love with our
town be can’t break the bonds, lie
has had repeated offers to take
charge of colleges, but he stays with
us, and we at e glad and con
tented.
If you could see our jail you
would know that we have no bad
people over here. It belongs to the
days of ”Auld Lang Syne,” and it
just stands there on its rock founda
tion in memory of Jasper’s pioneer
days. A man goes in there occasional
ly. The i'nst one, a hungry negro
that found forty or fifty jars of
preserves and gxeen fruits stored
away in a storm pit, and as he had
a key that fitted the lock he enjoyed
.Christmas. You know such tempta
tions are too much for a hungry
negro especially about Christmas. I
supposo you have seen tho call for
our road conference. We are bound
to have good roads, in our county,
and good roads are a sure index of
prosperous people. The farmers are
beginning their annual business of
hauling guano, paying thirty or
forty dollars per ton. Why will
they do it? Coiton seed meal is but
little over twenty dollars per ton,
and acid about twelve, tins gives a
compound superior to many brands
they pay so much for, at about eigh
teen or twenty dollars. But why not
make it at home? There is a field
about five miles of Eatonton that in
the memory of men not very old
was too poor for any vegetation, but
to day is among the best uplands of
Putnam. I find men occasionally
■who buy poor land, and by iudustry
and economy soon get it to where
it will produce a bale of cotton per
acre.—Eatonton Messenger.
