Present, and Secretary of
Clark Hoj/eil Club Say of
Story was a “Lie out
Whole Cloth.”
Macon .News. March IJ.
A story in the Atlanta Journal
on Friday in which the the Hoke president Smith
and secretary of
club were till edged to have said
things has aroused the wrath of
the officers and members of t he
Clark Howell Club in Mucon,and
it. caused President, Bon I. Jones
and Secretary Paul E Wilkes to
say what they thought of it in
words which cannot, he mistaken.
In ft communication printed in
yesterday’s Journal, Messrs. Jones
and wiles declare the story a “lie
OUt, of Whole cloth.”
Not only has the storv been do-
nounced iiy these two’ officials,
hut Secretary U' D McNeil of the
Hoke Smith‘dull denies Cinplmt-
icallv that he ever said the things
’1 he'Journal’s dispatch alleged he
tmid, and further t hat lie» never
was a member of the Clark How-
ell Cluli or that he ever said his
name laid been put down as a
member.
In fact the whole story was ex¬
posed as a fake, and is declared
by Messrs. Jones anti Wilkes to
he another specimen tactics of the Jour¬
nal’s thug in trying ,do
make Hoke Smith solid.
“lie out of whole cloth.”
Jn the communication which
they sent to the Journal
which was printed yesterday
gether with an attempt on
Journal's part at explaining
story, the t wo (Hark Howell
officials speak plainly mid
denounce the story us a “lie
of whole doth.” They both de¬
clare that neither the president of
the Hoke Smith Club or its sccl'c-
t,ury, Mr. R’eYeil, were ever put
down as members of the Clark
Howell Cl It I .
This is wl at they sent to The
Journal:
East Macon, Ga., Midi. 10, ’00
Editor of The Journal: My at¬
tention was called this morning
to the following item in your and pa¬
per, under date of March 9,
marked “Macon, Ga., Special
Dispatch to The Journal. Smith
Supporters Find Naums in How¬
ell Cluli; Political Butuation in
Bibb County Would Seem Quite
Anonmlsus to a Stranger.”
The abo e are the heailj rues, and
the article goes on to say Mr. T
It Ayer, the president oi the Hoke
Smith elul , is r< luted to Mr Clark
Howell, at d he was put down as
a member of the Howell club, but
when he heard the speech of Mr.
Hoke Smith at the auditorium
here last month he became tin en¬
thusiastic supported of Mr.
Smith. I e found t hat t lie fool¬
ish talk al out Mr. Smith’s hav¬
ing planned to injure the Demo¬
cratic party was the veriest rot,
and he pi t his talents and lbs en¬
ergies into play to save hi- friends
•who migl t accidentally foolish lie mis¬
lead by such stories, lb
gladly consented to become presi¬
dent of the Hoke Smith Club, and
tho lie has membership 1) eii keeping commit, tees right behind
who
have been rolling up a big list for
the Smith club, lie ways B Id
county shall be saved from the
tricks of the tricksters and lit? has
received encouragement Iloko enough
to believe that. Smith will
hijiit the field by a handsome ma¬
jority. tot plurality. In
words it. look* a* if Mr. Smith
will get more than all of the oth¬
er candidates combined.”
Mr. W D McNeil is secretary
of the Hoke Smith club. 1 went
to the Hoke Smith meeting a*
badly prejudiced of against
Smith as any the misled Geor¬
gians, he says: “1 urn for Hoke
Smith, and any other man will
for him after in hearing this him speak.
All we need 'county i*
imhtro him to come back here
and speak oitee more, and
in hi* audience those people who
failed to hear him before. No
man who hears him will tail to be
convinced. ’
••Mr. McNed v , and , Mr. Ayer , ar.
among the comity s most
workers in polities, and they are
rock-ribbed democrat*. Tho\
would tight to a finish any man
against whose demoertn v tit? \
have the slightest suspicion. They
arc now convinced that the
toons that trv to make it
that Mr. Smith would coquet with

to say to my

that no one in authority has ever

In an axplanntory note 'J’he
Journal says the story was sent in
by the Macon correspondent and
further that the information on
which it Was Inised was given by
E I. Martin.
It is slated that E , L Martin
was in Atlanta, It and explained
that Im and T Ayer, president
of the Hike Smith outfit and \V
D McNeil, tbo secretary, had u
conversation in the latter’s ofiiee
and that, he “got the impression
that the names of those two wore
understood" to be on the Clurk
Howell Club roll,
MCNK.1,-8 COSITIVK DENIAL.
I hat Secretary McNeil didu t
understand things that way ami-
that he never believed his name to
boon Urn Ilowell roll is thorough-
dmioiut ruled by the emphatic
denial winch he made in
lion w ill: the alleged interview in
winch he was made to say many
things,
This is what lie said about the
fake story:
i i An article appeared in
Friday afternoon issue of the
lanta Journal, which quoted
is aaying that “1 was under
impression that my nuJno was roll
ried on; the lnemberjjhip
the 11 -moll Club, apd gave
views in .general as to the
natorial race.”
“I denied to respectfully,
positively,.correct tlTis as 1
never been on the
roll of the Howol 1 Club, no
I ever ho stated to any person. 1
desire to state further that the
ticle in question Was not inspired
by me, nor was 1 aware of
until my attention was culled
it last night.”
now ell members signed cards.
The fact is pointed out by
Jones and Mr Wilke* that the
nal organization of the
Howell Club did not take
until after a few of the
Smith supporters met,
their club, and elected their
cers. .'they say, too, that they
not use names of persons without
their consent,' aid that tho
Bibb voters who caused the
ell' Cl lb to he formed, signed
tlnir names loth) postal
ask t ng to be enrol led.
.'Since the organization of
club dozens of.other names h
linen added, but not without
consent o’ the people who own
names, and they declare emphat¬
ically erroll that officers they know of enough the Iloki*
to
Smith organization.
No little continent has’ been
caused by t he Journal ’* story, and
its'luis been denounced by not on¬
ly II iwell nieiq but by supporter*
of Hoke Smith. They declare
that thug journalism of this
kind ts pot what the people ot
Bibb oounto want, and that it
won’t help the Journal’s candi¬
dates'.
