Be a Candidate.
To the public:—
A few weeks ago I advised
a few of my personal friends
and f ellow citizens that I ex¬
pected to be a candidate for
Represenative at the approach¬
ing [primary. This announce¬
ment was in entire good faith
at the time. But I have obli¬
gations both of a business and
personal nature that are of such
moral weight that I have reach¬
ed a conclusion not to be a can¬
didate. I shall remember with
grateful appreciation the volun¬
tary pledges of support and
friendship that have been
tendered.

A Thought For The
‘ Week.
To sav that the thriftless, the
lazy, the violous. the incapable,
ought to have the reward given
to those who are far sighted, ca¬
llable. and upright, is to say what
is not true and cannot be true,
Let ns try to level up, but let us
bfi'vare*»of the evil of leveling
down. If a mjp stumbles, it is
a good thing help him on
"his feet. Every one ot us needs a
helping hand now and then. But
if a man lies down, it is a waste ot
tune to try to carry him; and it
is a very bad thing for every one
it we make men feel that the
same reward will come to those
who shirk their work and to
tnose wno do it.—From 7’heodore
Roosevelt’s speech in Paris.
The Touring Cars Re¬
ceived Showers of
Flowers and
Flags.
I he good roads touring cars
passed through Carnesville Mow
day afternoon. A large majority
of the cars stopped for a few min
uites here and jollved the Carnes
ville citizens. They spoke very
complimentary of the roads in
Franklin county and wished that
many other counties had just as
good roads along the Highway.
The girls showered the cars with
various flowers and greeted them
with cheers and flags, The deco
rations were of red and white and
t bi g:;. The “Old Glory” flag
greeted the cars with waves as
thev turned the corner on Lavo
nia sr.reet at Hotel Central. The
streets were lined with people to
witness the jolly touung party,
Commerce entertained them to a
good old iashion Georgia barbe
cue and many other amusements.
Lavonia had two signs one was
“welcome’’ and the other “stay
with us”
Carnesville is.glad to have the
High wav and she will do much
toward the improvement of the
roads along the line of Franklin,

Obedienee-
Couid I gather about me the
boys and girls ot America and
give to them a message and con
dense the message into one word
that word would be “Obedience”
not in a servile sense; but in its
highest surHificance.
Obedience.to the instinct of
right that are posessed bv every
entelligent human being, obeying
at her and mother, and that
meahsto be truthtn I, loving and
reverent;
Obedient to your instructor
which iusures intelligence, integri
ty and education. Obedience to
the laws ot courtesy, neve*' stoop
ing to speak an untruth or a
meaia act, nor to hide behind a a
other’s failing—your own mistakes
of wrong doing. We hoar much
the last few years of the corrnp
tion in high places, and that men
and women too of renown have
defiled tiie positions of honor en¬
trusted to their keeping. If in
early life these individuals had lis¬
tened to the whisperings of con
science and in later years
practiced the lessons of obedience
to truth and justice taught them
in childhood. If not these without
the respeet of those with whom
you most associate. While we
look to the Legisluture and Exeu
#
tive power at the land to give us
just and equitable laws remember
that what is best for the nation is
best for the community is right
for the individual In a few years
the boys aid girls of today will be
the landmarks u»d homekeepsrs
of the United States, and it isnec
essary that thev start life aright.
Be leaders for the advancement
of humanity—and not a hind¬
rance to the wheels of progress.
You can no more live without ex
erting an influence than an oak
can stand without casting a shad-
Off. Let that influence pe always
fora higher civilization, and the
up hfting of humanity. As a final
ad Monition let this thought re
main with you—that no matter
how high assends the Star of your
ambition, over it guarding it
with zealous care will move “Old
Glory” over nation’s emblem, die..
tating peace to the world and de
M11 obedience to the cause
of justica from all who claim its
protection,
Miss Qttye Wanslry,
