ELECTRICITY IN WATER.
v
Our conceptions of strength and
endurance a& ro associated with vis¬
ible implements and mechanical ar¬
rangements that it .is hard to cast
them aside, and yet tb« stream of
electric fire that splits an ashis not a
ponderable thing, and the » way in
whic’n the loadstone reaches the ten
pound weight is not perceptible.
You would think the man had a
pretty good Set of morals that could
gnaw a poker like a stick of candy,
but a bottle' of innocent-looking
hydrogen gas will eat up a' piece of
iron, bar as though it .were a piece of
favorite pudding. lays GlVim Mr. Faraday, tiavihg the
great chemist, that&ach to
demonstrated drop of wa¬
ter is the shea|h of electric force suf¬
ficient to charge 800,000 Leyden jars.
, In spite of teetotal pledges, therefore,
the most temperate man is a 'prettv
hard drinker, for fae is compelled to
slack his thirst with a. condensed
thundeF storm. The difference in

VITAL STATISTICS.
Some interesting facts concerning
the relative vitality of males and fe¬
males are shown in the forty-sixth
annual report of the English regis
Ipersfes tray general. In each • 1,000 living
there are 487 males and 513
females, but for every 100 females
103.5 males were born. At every
age of fife the death rate was lower
in the females, and the difference js
greater in early years. .In both sexes
a diminished death rate is taking
place; This is more-marked in fe.
males than in,mulfg, a) aU.ages. The
improvementIs Sspfecially notable iu
women up tt> 45, and in men to 35.
The mean expectation of life of a
male at birth is 41.35, and of a fe¬
male 44.63 years, The annual ex
pectatioh of illness is, counted by
days, nearly the same in both sexes.

PAINTING A CAMEL.
• An elephant once played an amu¬
sing trick up^n a camel, which was
its neighbor m a menagerie. One
of the workmen had been engaged
in painting a portion of the house,
touching off the ornamental projec
tions/With red paint. The young
eldp^ant watched him with great in¬
termit interest, apparently amused at
the bright bits of color. t'
The painter was absorbed in his
work when the dinner-bell • rang.
He put bis pot and brush down, and
went off to his meal. .

The iinrikisha men of Japan are
a pathetic class. Their lives are
limited to a few years after they be¬
gin the business, and yet their rauks
are kept full by new recruits.
Their queer little ways are a con¬
stant source of amusement and sur¬
prise to the new comer. When A
had been here but a few weeks r she
called a jinrikisha one morning, as
she wanted to go to the opposite side
of the bluff, more than a mile off.
Previously she had made the same
trip in a brougham on hue mornings.
She was no sooner seated in the
jinrikisha and well tucked up in her
jlap-robe, than the little Jap was off
like a shot without asking or being
told where, he should take her.
—— said to beraelf,—
“Well now, this is queer! I Won¬
der if you know where I want to go?
Very well, you can go ahead, and 1*11
see; I shall not volunteer any unf
asked-for information now!” JpA
The little man apparently needed
none, for he continued on a fast-rcot.
A—-’s wonder increased moment¬
arily; the fun became exciting; she
laughed quietly to herself. ■ J •
At last he stopped, dropped t,he
thills, and relieved her of the lap-robe
with an air of absolute assurance
that she was where she had planned
to go—and she was. Not a word had
passed between them.

DIFFERENCE IN OCEAN.
Apropos of the discussion and
ijections relatives to th works of
the Panama canal, M. C- Leaseps
•
recalled at the last meel * of the
French academy of sciences that
Bonaparte formerly pretended that
there existed a difference of nine
meters in the levels of the Mediter
ranean ond the Red sea. Eminent
scientific men like Laplace combated
the idee, and cutting of the Suez
canal showed that Bonaparte was in
error. The same objections have
been raised about the Pannama canal,
and its opponents claim that locks
will be required. To settle the mat¬
ter, the academy of sciences have
named a committee ^fj^inent men
who will make t dies,,
