Advertisements Tu-dav.
Our advertising columns to-day are
full, and will well repay the reader for a
careful perusal. Literature, art, science,
merchandise, legal notices, dentistry,
and several other things can be found
for the consideration of the readers of
The Democrat, and we ask their atten¬

To Trespassers.
In our columns to-day will be found a
notice and warning to trespassers. It
might be well far those who are in the
habit of trespassing upon the lands of
others to take heed to this warning, as
the advertisers assure us they “nnfean
business, - ’* and will prosecute every case
of trespass to the extent of the law with¬
out exception. This is “the turf of
grass,” look out for “the stones.”

V erllied.
Wo have heretofore had little faith
in the adage, that “the minds of great
men run in the same channel,” but
acknowledge that our opinion has under¬
gone somewhat of a change upon this
subject, by seeing an editorial like one,
verbatim et literatim, we published about
two weeks ago, in the Butts County
Argus, without credit The only ad
vantage "we have in the matter is, that
we thought it first.

The Crops.
The very ilry, cool weather for the
past two or three weeks, is injuring tho
crops aud greatly retarding the farmers
in this vicinity. Corn is small, and in
many places bad stands ate reported.—
Much of the cdtton has Hot come up at
all, and what is'UpTfldks'hdflly. Spring
oats are reported to : be almost a failure,
and wheat is now injuring rapidly from
the dry weather. Our farmers are be
hind-hand, and the grounds isso hafd in
the stiff lands that it is almost impossi¬
ble to work it. Taken altogether, the
crop prospects are not very flattering at
the present.

“Patent Outsides.”
We are continually receiving speci¬
men copies of “patent” concerns, with
their enticing notices to partake con¬
spicuously marked. We do our own
work at home, and expect to continue to
do so. We strenuously object to putting
ourselves at the mercy of these “patent
printers,” as we hold all do who run
their papers on the “patent” plan.—
We do not consider it a ligitimate way
to do business, and we now, once for all,
assure these “patent” printers it is just
so much thrown away for them to send
ns specimens or circulars.

Henry Edwards, the same who repre¬

year or two ago, and who is now living
on Mr. W. B. Kendrick’s plantation,
near Sharon, had a row with his wife on
last Sunday night, and made so much
noise in giving her a thrashing, that her
step-father, who lives only a hundred
yards or so from the said Edwards,
heard it, and interfered in behalf of the
woman. Henry made some lnuu tin cats,
and a feint to attack, when old Josh
Kemt-iok, the step-father, patted him
e:i the side of the head with good sized
rock, which came near sending the step¬
son-in-law to the happy hunting grounds.
Henry has been very quiet since, and
Mr. Kendrick, we learn, has succeeded
in inducing them make a treaty of peace.

Compliment to The Democrat.
The Crawfordville Democrat is an
honor to Taliaferro county .—Augusta
Chronicle & Constitutionalist.
We accept the above compliment with
pride, and value it the more on account of
the high source from whence it emina
ted. But let us say to our esteemed
contemporary that The Democrat has
been “honored” by the support and
countenanc of a high-toned, independ¬
ent, generous and intelligpnt people—
and to them belong the honor. Here
is the homo of Alexander H. Stephens;
in Taliaferro county was born and
raised John L. Stephens, Judge Linton
Stephens, John L. Bird, John Tilly and
Prof. Dick Johnson. In Taliaferro
county are still the Bristows, the Har¬
rises, the Stewarts, the Rhodes, the
Gunns, the Veazeys, the
the Peeks, the Asburys, the Darracotts,
the. Farmers, the Chapmans, and others
' vll ° sprang from stocks as noble as these,
aild to whom man >' of their dependents
are not a disgrace. From other coun¬
ties, States and countries have come the
representatives from other families as old,
as respectable and as intelligent as those
mentioned above, and to-day Taliaferro
county contains a population which will
compare favorably with that of any
county in tlie State for intelligence in¬
dependence of spirit, and big-hearted
generosity. With such a constituency
as this, it were impossible for a journal
determined to stoop to nothing ignoble
or unjust to fail; and to such as these,
both in and out of the county, whom
The Democrat numbers among its
friends more than to our individual ef
forts is owing its success, and we accept
tlie compliment as an honor to our
friends more than to ourselves. Our
brethren of the Press, in and out of tho
State, have given Tns Democrat many
flattering notices, for which we return
our sincere thanks, and we shall strive
to maintain in the future the good opin¬
ions and journalistic courtesies which
have been accorded to us in the short
past.
