CRAWFORDVILLE DEMOCRAT. Volume 7 . THE OLD LOG CHURCH. On olden walls, in memory’s h ill, With roses ’round it clinging, A picture rare, of antique air. '1 lie old log uhurch is swinging. Of timbers rough, alid gnarled and tough i It stands in rustic beauty, A monument to good intent And loyal, Christian duty. The forest trees, kissed by the breeze Of early autuinn \veatlier, Stand grimly by, and seem to sigh And bend their boughs together. Down by the mill, and up the hill, And through the hazel thicket, lead And o’er ttie, mead brown pathways Up the rustic wicket. And by these ways, on holy days, The village folks collected, sacred word And humbly heard the And worshipped unaffected. Sweet fancy's art and poet’s heart Can see the oiil time preacher And village sage now turn the page, As minister or teacher. For in the charcli, with dreaded birch, On week days he presided, In awful mien, a tutor seen, ’Twixt lore and licks divided. But where it stood, in dappled wood, A city sprang to life ; And jolly noise of barefoot boys Is lost in business life. With years now flown, the children grown Are launched on life’s mad billows ; The pretty maid is masron’s staid, The master’s ’licath the willows. When finished and plant¬ ed in shrubbery this will be one of the most attractive academies in the State. Dick Hall, colored, commonly called "Dinah’s Dick,” was arrested by Sher¬ iff Speir and placed in jail in Thomson OH Monday last, charged, as we learn, with having stolen a cow near Augusta. Dick must be a hardened sinner He vras sent to the chain gang from Thom¬ son a few years ago, and, after serving out his term, returned to Augusta Mi.ere he was soon again convicted of burglary and sent to the penitentiary. He served out the term and again loca¬ ted iu Augusta. He came to Thom¬ son several weeks ago, and soon after¬ wards a number of burglaries occurred. Suspicion points strongly towards Dick as the guilty party. HANCOCK. Sunbeam of August IS. The house of Jake Harper, an indus tnous colored olacksmitb, was broken into on last Tuesday night, while he and his wife were attending meeting, and about seventy-five dollars stolen from a trunk. A negro boy was ar rested on suspicion and implicating acknowledged that he took the money, an other party as a confederate, but after wards denied knowing anything about the money or being in any way inter ested in the burglary. He was, bow ever, placed in jailto await trial, There was quite a row in Sparta on last Saturday Dight which at one time assumed a very serious aspect. Mr. G. lv Gilmer while at work in his shop repairing an engine for Mr. O. II. Arnold, last week, had the terrible accident of the entile heavy iron mon¬ ster to fall upon bis person bruising him up in many places. Only a block of wood that was used in elevating the engine saved his life by holding up the tremendous weight. Last Friday the Augusta Clinches came to appointment, and played Oglethorpe Stars at the Salmon base ball ground near Lexington. Owing to the well skilled throwers of the Clinch club and the unpracticed Stars, tlie count came out, Clinches 23, and Stars 11. The game was quite inter¬ esting, and the spectators were many and well pleased. GREENE. Herald and Home Journal of August 17 th. The Superior court will convene the second Monday iu September. The manner in which the citizens have moved in the matter of re-placing the destroyed church is indicative of their character as ener¬ getic and whole-souled Uhmtians. We learn that Mr. A. Gus Caldwell, who lives near Smyrna, iu this county, was accidentally shot- by bis sou on last Monday night. It seems that Mr. Caldwell had gone into the yard for some puruose. Ilis son was aroused and seeing his father walking around the yard, mistook him for a prowler and fired on him. Mr. Caldwell was considerably peppered with shot, but not at all s-riousiy wounded. Governor Blackburn, of Kentucky, tells of a young man who was wohud ed in the head by a pistol ball. After he had apparently recovered he robbejl a store of a lot of stuff that was of no value to him, loaded it into a wagon and hauled it luto the woods, where he concealed the wiune projieity. He was sent to the penitentiary. He serveu rr ^ class of goods, wliieh he loaded into the buggy he had run off with before, and concealed the thyigs in tlie same place ha had selected on the occasion of his first offence. Once more he was sent to the penitentiary, and had nearly completed his second term, when tlie prison doctor gave it as Ins opinion that the bullet which had stiuck tlie young man’s head indented the skul sufficiently to press on the, brain, and that this was the reason that he com mitted the burglaries. So the prisoner was sent home. He lost no time in loading up the old buggy again, cisely as he did before, and was return ed to the penitentiary.
