Mr. Henry Fitspatrick, son of our postmaster, has returned from the north, after completing his course at a business college and left Monday for Augusta, to take a position ioi the next 12 months with Mr. James Miliar. The Statesboro Eagle thinks the cot¬ ton crop will be gathered by the 1st of October. Mrs. Berch Chapel, of Meriwether, who recently gave birth to ipu*]runlets, has had ten children in four years. An Athenian has an insurance of one hundred thousand dollars on his life. During a heavy windstorm,hist week, in Sfewart, the negroes thought a cy¬ clone was on hand, and organized a powerful prayer-meeting. Mr. William Awtry, of Atlanta, it is supposed, dropped asleep while sitting on the railroad track at Smyrna. His skull was fractured by a passing train and he diet! in a little while. He was a brakeman on the Western and Atlan¬ tic road. The residence of Col. A. L. Wood¬ ward, at Culloden, Monroe county, was deetroyed by fire last Morid y night. The contents were all saved. The loss is about $3,U00. No insurance. Sarah Slieals, colored, while stepping across a bianch in Athens, had a garter snake to wind around her leg, and when she attempted to pull it off it bit her twice and ran up under her clothes. She is all right. The coroner’s jury held an inquest over the body of James Davis Cheney, colored, of Canton, Ga., Monday even¬ ing and returned in substance the fol¬ lowing verdiet : “We, the jury, find that .James Davis Cheney, colored,came to his death by strangling at the hands of one Jerry Marshal, colored.
