from Win. T. Stewart.
_We are glad to welcome W. O
Mitchell, Esq., of Union Point, to our
town. Oscar is a young lawyer of fine
legal talent and will doubtless succeed
in his profession.
—Storms have become so much the
order of the day that it is hardly worth
while to notice the heavy blow which
we had on Wednesday night. We
le trn however, that the ha 1 was se¬
vere at some points and did considera¬
ble damage.
—We are pained to learn ttiat Mr.
John Rhodes received by telegraph
peremptory summons to Florida, from
which we led to apprehend that his
daughter. Miss Minnie Lee Rhodes, is
seriously worse.
— Monday and Tuesday were re
markably line days for business of all
kinds and we were pleased at s ‘eing a
smaller number of loiterers upon our
streets than usual during court week.
_Tiie weather was so unfavorable
last night that very few attended pray

Several of the hoys, he says, w re very
tnucli fatigued when they reached their
destination. It will he remembered
that the Cr vwfordvill ■ Amateurs gave
an entertainment at vVoodville last
Friday evening.
—Boys respect the ladies to-night
and leave your stimulants at home.
Ttiey say if you don’t, you will haye to
dance by yourselves. What greater
ansuit is there, than fora young man
to even be where a tarty is. with bad

pired term of Hon. George F. Pierce
decease!. Mr. Harly hits sought this 1
appointment, as we learn, that lie may
be letter able to collect amounts due ;

Our Second Year.
With this issue,'the Democrat en
ters upon the second year of its history
under its present management. We
began under many unfavoring circum¬
stances ; and we were not without ap¬
prehension that the predictions of those
who prophesied its speedy failure might
prove correct. We entered upon the
work however with the determination
to issue a paper such as the people
wouti be willing to support. fallen far
we are conscious of having deeply
short of our standard, we are
thankful for the kindness with which
our efforts have been received. We
must indeed acknowledge the receipt
of far more indulgence than we expeo
toil or deserved. To all of our friends,
who have cheered us by kind words or
by more substantial marks of their ap¬
preciation, we return most sincere
thanks.
And now it entering upon our sec¬
ond year, we, do so with a renewed re¬
solve to make tlie Democrat the ad¬
vocate of everything that will promote
tlie credit or tlie material prosperity of
our coumy. We do not promise to deal
gently witn anything that will affect
liet honor, or interests ; but we shall
endeavor so to express ouiselves that
though we may censure severely, we
shad not malign. It is our wish to
publish a paper that shall reflect honor
upon our county ; and we most earn
estly invoke tlie pecuniary and moral
aid of all our people to enable us to do
so. Give us a hearty support, a id we
will give you a better paper than we
have ever done.
