MURDERD1) liV A tHIE^,
Charlotte. N. C., May 7 —News
has reached here of the horrible murder
of Mrs. HarrisonJReed, a lady’aged 64,
bear Winston, N. 0. Yesterday morn¬
ing about 6 o’clock the family took
breakfast, and Mr. Reed went to work,
some half mile from the house. He
had been absent one hour When he
beard screams in the direction of his
dwelling and immediately started home.
At the gate, some sixty yards from the
bouse, he met his wife, whose face and
Clothing werejeovered with blood. She
came through the gate a few steps to
meet him then she sank to the ground,
tie was appalled and horrified at the
sight which met his gaze—his wife in
the throes of death, with her thoat cut
and head beaten in a most horrible
manner. She lived but a few minutes
after he reached her, but long enough
to tell that Henry Swain committed
the awful deed. At {the coroner’s ex¬
amination it Was found that ten
Wounds had been inflicted on her body,
two of which bad'fractured the skull.
The wounds varied in length from one
Rich to three inches. The wound in
the throat, measuring about one and a
half inches long and three inches deep,
severed the carotid artery and also
pierced the windpipe, so that when she
was reached by her husband 'she could
only whisper. The coroner’s jnry ren¬
dered a verdict that deceased came to
her death by weapons in the hands of
Itenry Swain. Swain, Who is about 2S
years old, was captured this morning;
walking in a corn field near the scene
ot the murder, and was placed in jail at
Salem. It is supposed he was robbing
the house, and being detected by the
old lady murdered her to keep her from
telling. Great excitement prevails oyer
the affair, and open talk is made of
lynching Swam.”

BRINGING MlM TO *HE POINT.
Chicago Tribune : The dther night.
When one of out prominent society
young men called to -see his girl, he
found her mother sitting quietly before
the fire. After bidding him “gOO'l

face and said : “Do you really love
toy daughter Emma?’* “Well—ah—

youth, turning red in the face, “I have

“Yes,” broke in the anxious mama ;
“and that is the trouble with you young

“HERE I IS, MAMMA!”
The ribbons of little Doily Fretz’s
blue hat were tied under Dolly’s little
about 8 o’clock in the morning and
went to the grocer’s to buy her mother
some soap. Little Dolly is 4 years old, and
herparentslivedatl94West Mouroe street,
Dolly returned in due time with the soap,
whicli slid delivered to the ma id instead of
to her mother. She then skipped out of
the kitchen singing “Peek-a-Boo. ”
Pretty soon Mrs. Fretz came down-stairs
and asked for Dolly. No one knew where
she was. ‘‘She isn’t up-stairs,” exclaimed
Mrs. Fretz ; “my goodness ! she] must be
lost.” The household immediately repair¬
ed to the street and gazed up and down.
No Dolly. The grocer said she had gone
home; the neighbors had not seen her,
neither had any of Dolly’s playmates. As
the rttihutes dragged along Mis. Fretz grew
anxious and bethought her self of the pol¬
ice. In fifteen minutes every police sta¬
tion in the, city had a description of Dolly
and as each policeman “pulled the box”
the description was telephoned him. At
10 :.'tO o’clock Mrs. Fretz was wild with
grief for there was yet no tidings of Dolly.
“Imust advertise for her,” she sobbed.
Half an hour later the following was left
at the Daily News office and appeared in
the evening issue :
T OST-A LITTLE GIRL, 4 YEARS
old, blue eyes, and blonde hair ; wore
blue hat, blue stockings, and plain brown
dress : name. Dolly Fretz. Send any in¬
formation to 194 W\ Monroe street.
At 11:30 o’clock Mrs. Fretz was overcome
with grief, and returned to her room.
Throwing herself upon her bed She cried
in anguish : “Oh, Dolly ! Dolly ! my lost
darling, where are you ?”
“Here I is, matnma,” said a small,sleepy
voice.and little Doily crawled our from un¬
der the bed, rubbing her two small fists in
her two blue eyes. -Chicago News.
Potato seed.
A farmer planted in bis garden ten
rows of Irish potatoes, each row con¬
sisting of four hills. His object was to
ascertain the amount of plauting mate¬
rial requisite to reach satisfactory re¬
sults. Here is the results :
First row—One eye ia each hill.
Product, forty pounds of well develop
ed potatoes.
Second row—Two eyes in each hill.
Product, fifty pounds of tubers, rather
mixed as to siV.e.
Third row—Three eyes,in each bill.
Product,fifty-six pounds of mixed sizes,
many small ones.
Fourth row—Seed end of medium po
tato. Product, sixty-three 3 pounds 1 1
very few small tubers, mostly large.
Fifth row—Butt end of a medium
potato Product, fifty-one pounds ; few'
large tubers, mostly small.
Sixth row—One small potato. Pro
dud, sixty pounds, mixed as to si2e,
tftany small ones.
Seventh row—One medium-sized po¬
tato. Product, seventy-three pounds
of tubers, very fine and large, few small
ones.
Eighth row— One large potato, Pro¬
duct, one hundred and two pouuds of
Uniformly large size.
Professor Roberts reported to the
New York Farmers’Club that he had
found that utuPr the same condition
small potatoes for seed gave the poorest
result, the middle part of large potatoes
nekt, the seed end next, and the stem
end the best. A whole large potato,
with a single eye was tbe best possible
seed. More work is needed, but better
crops are secured in cultivating in ro«s
or drills rather than in hills.—Vaughn’s
Manual.
FIERCE FIGHT WITH A HORSE.
Monday evening as Mr. George Hoyt,
of Richland, was returning from Plain
well in a sulky, leading a stallion, says
the Kalamazoo (Mich.) Telegraph, the
stallion attacked him. Mr. Iloyt suc¬
ceeded in keeping him at a safe distance
till just as he was crossing Spring brook,
which is about fifty rods from his house.
Here the stallion seized Mr. H. by the
arm with bis teeth, and drew him from
the sulky and commenced a furious
fight with him, biting large pieces of
flesh from his arms and severely bruis¬
ing his body. Mr. H.. a powerful man,
by the way, kept a strong holt upon the
ferocious auimal, or probably |he would
have been soon killed. Mr. Barker
who was near by, started for his gun to
shoot tbe horse. Meantime Miss Net
tie Hoyt, hearing the cries of her father,
ran to bis resene with a pitchfork, and,
notwithstanding the warning of her fa
ther not to come near, as the horse
would kill them both, she made such
good use of the fork tines that the beast
gave up the battle, leaving Mr. H. al
most exhausted and the flesh on hi3
right arm lacerated and chewed to a
from is shoulder to his elbow.
On Wednesday gangrene set in, and
the attending physician decided that
j U or ^ er gave Mr. H.’s life all of the
bruised flesh must be removed. This
was at once done, but Mr. H. did not
show signs of improvement. On Fri
day Dr. Hitchcock amputated tbe
arm at the shoulder, and at this
Mr. H.’s condition is considered
critical.
