Under a largo root near Sur
reucy, in Appling county, was
found a fnw days ago a new-born
babe with its head and face
crushed. Investigation developed
the fact that it was the illegiti
mate child of a white woman, who
at its birth had killed it, and had
her little boy of about 12 years of
age to put it into this place of
concealment. The woman’s name
is Harden. The coroner held an
inquest, the crime was settled
upon the inhuman mother and
she is now in jail at Baxley.

North-western colony yesterday
afternoon, caused by a fight be
tween Deputy P. M., 6. W. James,
and the Bishop, of Sibley. Owing
to the cool head and quickness of
thought of Capt. (J. W. Kirby, no
one was seriously injured. Bishop
and James had some words a few
days ago in regard to the laws,
which caused the trouble.
J. H. Dozier, of the lumber firm
of Dozier <fc Co., of Athens, was in
town yesterday looking after the
interest of his firm
The new saw mill of the Central
Georgia Land <fc Lumber Co. is
now in operation and is doing
some excellent work.
E. E. Hortman, book-keeper for
the Cent. Ga. L. – Lbr. Co, who
went home sick last week, has re
turned, and is now all smiles.
Some think it strange how a youug
lady can bring about smiles where
doctors have failed.
Miss Julia Ledbetter, one of
Cordele’s accoplished young la
dies, is visiting Miss Pinny this
week.
Miss Nellie Thorpe, our former
teacher, has accepted a place in
the school at Arabi, which opened
last Monday. While we regret to
lose her, we congratulate Arabi in
securing such an efficient teacher.
It’s an interesting sight to visit
the “Sibley Art Club” and watch
their work for an hour.
The members of the “Piney
Woods Club” are expecting the
biggest “blow out” of the season
