1 HOUSEHOLD AFFAIRS. .t ^ "j/ A Screen For the Writing Corner. 'A In these days of fanoy note papers a screen covered with the envelopes of one’s letters is an ornamental and use ful piece of furniture. The ordinary bamboo screen with two or three panels serves as a background, and on this'are panted the lilac and blue, white and pink, long and square en velopes sent by many correspondents. The variety of stamps add color to the whole, and the postmarks are often in teresting, if one’s friends are globe trotters. The envelopes, if arranged simply in straight rows, are easy to , read, but fans, circles and designs formed by white or tinted envelopes are devised by fanciful folk. If one have a collection of handsome crested , or monogram envelopes they lot k well * arranged ns a border. A screen of this description is an interesting feature of the writing corner of an in- ■ genious woman’s room. DAinty Droit Closet*. Perfumed pads for trunk trays aud compartments of the dresser have proved - so satisfactory in imparting that delicate scent which women love that one woman has carried out the scheme still further. She had been in the habit of* banging sachets of her . favorito powder in her clothes closet, but it did not seem to be as satisfac tory as ibe pads in the bureau. She experimented by hanging sheets . around the wall and using a liquid floeut, but that evaporated.'. Finally she took out the pads from her trunk and bung them on the books in the • dress closet. Then she thought, “Why not pad the closet?” fwNo sooner thought of than done. Her bost dress closet is now uphol stered over all the walls and ceiling. She did it herself. The backing of the pads is cheesecloth. Then thoro is a thick layer of cotton batting thickly strewn with her favorite vio let sachet powder, and covering the .whole is a delicate shade of violet China silk. Before fastening this lin ing to the walls of the closet it was tied in comfort” style with dainty baby ribbon, tied in bow knots, j, The pads are bound all around the 'edge with violet satin ribbon, having loops at the upper edge to hang the pads to the wardrobe hooks. These findings are not “sewed to stay’* at ,the top, but may be easily ripped loose in order to renew the powder at any time. Pads on the eeiling and above ■the hooks are fastened with brass- beaded tacks hidden under the ribbon bows. '• This luxurious closet may be imi tated in cheaper upholstery and bo quite as dainty. Bilkolines, which come in such delicate huos and pat terns, with sprays of the most delicto ..flowers,.-can be. usod. These - MRp and inexpensive materials are to be bad with a white or shaded ground, and the sprays of flowers may match .the odor used'—violets, roses, crab- apple blossoms, heliotropes, or almost anything in the way of a flower from .which perfume is extracted. If a .white ground with sprays of flowers is used, the bow knots can match the flower, and if a tinted ground is used white ribbon is very pretty.—New York Herald. White, of Selma, Ala., the only surviving brother-in-law of Abraham Lincoln, was an officer of the Alabama state guard at the out break of the war, and under orders of the executive of' the state took part with his command In the capture of Fort Morgan, Mobile bay, before Ala bama had formally seceded from the Union. When it was reported to Pres ident Lincoln that his brother-in-law had performed this daring exploit against the national authority, on be ing asked what he would do about it, replied: “Well, I suppose I shall have to hang White—when we catch him.” Maj. White later performed many dis tinguished military and civil servfces for the Confederacy.—New York Trib une. Queer Legal Tangle. The will of Henry Yocum, who own ed the yacht Paul Jones, and was on it when it was lost in the Gulf of Mexico, left all his estate to his daugh ter, and should she have died before he did the estate would have gone to" his heirs. The daughter was also on the boat, and because she, too, has heirs, the case makes a curious legal tangle. The old Roman law held that in case of shipwreck a person below the age of 15 was presumed to die be fore an older person who perished In the same wreck. Above the age of 16 it is presumed that the elder of two persons died first. The daughter was 20 years old, but the heirs of the father propose to have a fight for the eState. Mr. Hull is fifty-eight years' of age. He was born at Clinton, O., in' 1841, and was educated at the Asburyy Ind., university and at the Iowa Wes-i leyan college. In early life he movedl to Iowa, where he resided when the war broke out in 1861. Entering one of the Iowa regiments he served with gallantry under the union flag. In 1872 he became the secretary of the Iowa, senate, and held that office during six consecutive years. Subsequently h» became the secretary of the state de partment and still later lieutenant gov-, ernor. On retiring from the office of! lieutenant governor, he entered con-' gress, where he has now served four, terms. There are few better equipped debaters in congress than Mr. HullJ This fact was recently attested by the, zeal and success with which he engi-i neered through the national house of| representatives the measure of whfehl he is the author. j r*c r* C \ Yankee Doodle. A writer in the Daily Telegraph states that Yankee Doodle, the inspire ing notes of which are likely to bq heard for some time to. come in many strange lands and on waters of manyj remote seas, was originally Nankea Doodle and was written in ridicule of Oliver Cromwell. Furthermore, though upon thiB he casts doubts, it is said the famous tune was composed by a Dr.' Shakburg. It would be difficult for the doctor, who was a surgeon, wit, and musician in the American War of In dependence, to have composed (plagiar ism apart) a tune already extant, a hundred and fifty years before. But the bibliography, so tb say, of the sonjLiuifl tune is far more gAmplicated. No doubt some words were sung to the air ot Yankee Doodle in contempt of the Pro tector, hut the air is almost not Eng lish at all. There is a harvest song bf the German laborers who yearly mi grate to the Low Countries which is almost certainly the origin of the American national air. In the musi cal antiquities ot England the very tuns is said to exist. The tune was known also as Lydia Fisher’s Jiff in Charles the Second’s time.
