HAMILTON CONFESSES.
The Grand Jury of Hall county
was called together Wednesday of
last week and we print the follow
ing from the Georgia Cracker;
The Grand Jury adjourned yes
terday afternoon at 4‘ 110 o’clock.
True bills were returned against
Mark Bell, Ollie Bell, Tom Bryson.
Charlie Tanner, Henry Towery
and Taylor Hamilton, charging
them with murder.
The Grand Jury made a few
presentments among the number a
recommendation that the public
roads be looked after. Also that it
was the sense of that body that it
was inadvisable to hold a special
• term of court before about the mid
dle of November. Judge Estes
Stated that lie thought this best but
would think the matter over and
announce later when the special
term to try these casese9 would bo
held.
Taylor Hamilton is said to have
made a full confession before the
Grand Jury. What that confession
was is known to no one but the
grand jurors who heard it. How
ever, he told to an Atlanta Jour
nal reporter Thursday what pur-
poted to be the consession he made
here before the Grand Jury.
He says that Tom Bryson came
to MuysviHe the day before Si
Smith was Killed arid told Jinn,
and several others, that there was
going to be a lynching in Gaines
ville that night and he wanted
Humilton, Freeman and John Camp
bell, of Maysville, to go with him
and be in the mob, Hamilton then
goes on to relate'fiow he was in
duced to come here; how he was in
troduced to members of the mob;
how they met under a tree and
then marched across a pasture' to
the jail; how Sheriff Mundav was
awakened and Was told the sheriff
of Gilmer county had a prisoner to
be locKed up; how Sheriff Mundy
then opened the door to let them
in with the prisoner, and about the
shouting which immediately took
place.
Hamilton says the mob left the
jail after .the shooting, going to. a
field nearby where some one in the
crowd handed him a $20 gold piece
android him to hit the 2 o’clock
train for home, lie says lie wu 1 Kcd
every step to Maysville and got
there about an hour before sun
up.
About the arrest by Detective
Looney, Hamilton says:
‘‘The first I saw of Captain
Looney was when he came to
Maysville. He sat arourd the
town and I met him and talked to
him about the crops. Ho went
away and I did not see him again
until one of the marshals came to
my house and said that an olficor
was waiting down the road in a bug
gy for me.
I went down there and it was
Looney and he arrested me.
Campbell had told me that T,oon-
ey was going to bring a p^le of
money to Maysville and thill-we
would get it. But that’s not why
I confessed, I,knew I had done
vsqng spd l knew the best way
out of it was to tell the truth,”

It is our pleasure to call the at

We specially commend Prof. Booth,
principal of this institute, as a
scholar of rare attainments. He
is a Christian gentleman and will

sons of morality as well as the
languages.
There was an enrollment of 200 last
year, twenty-two of whom were
from our county. The school
building is an ideal one, the loca
tion the very best, and the people
of the town are generous, kind and
progressive.
