high and sixty feet square at the base,
which was set up by the railway as a
monument to Oakes Ames and Oliver
Ames.
In the later eighties there arrived
at Sherman a shabby person of melan
choly aspect, who put up a "shack”—
Western for shanty—not far from the
monument. Ostensibly, he was pros
pecting, and he continued to prospect
for three years without accomplishing
any results, so far as could be ob
served. At the end of that period the
management of the Union Pacific re
ceived from him a communication de
manding the Immediate removal of the
monument from the premises, which
he claimed as his under the Home
stead law.
The matter was regarded in a hum
orous light at first, but subsequent pro
ceedings developed the fact that the
squatter had what lawyers call n
"case.”
The stranger, it seems, had located
on a section of land which did not be- I
long to the Union Pacific—the same
section on which the monument had,
by an inadvertance, been placed. He
knew very well what he was about,
and the upshot of the affair was that
the railway had to pay $5,000 for the
squatter’s tract, in order to make Its
title good. .,
The monument, by the way, is dis
tant only about one hundred yards
from the station, and it is a favorite
trick of experienced persons to induce
green travelers to attempt a run to
the pyramid and back during the two
minutes of the trains’ wait. In nine
cases out of ten they fall on the way
back bleeding at the nose, the air be-
| ing so rarefied at that elevauon of
i 8,300 feet as to forbid such exer
cise.—Saturday Evening Post.

Yale's $75,000 Football Season.
Yale’s gate receipts for the football
Beason will reach the handsome total
of about $75,000. The game with Har
vard alone, which had 40,000 specta
tors, added $35,000 to the football earn
ings of Old Ell’s sons. The game
with Princeton was worth $15,000 to
them. From the eleven other games
they netted $25,000. So that the aver
age grows earnings of a first class col
lege football team is about $5,800 per
game.
This la a fact that bears witness to
the great and all-the-time-growing
fondness of the American people for
clean and skilful athletic sports. It also
suggests that if the expenses of train
ing the team are kept within modest
limits, the football earnings of a crack
team will before long be of themselves
a considerable endowment fund for a
college. Yale’s $75,000 from gate re
ceipts is the equivalent of four per
cent, per annum on $1,875,000, which is
a larger endowment fund than is en
joyed by many of our best-known col
leges, including Amherst, Bowdoln,
