• The Grand Jury, selected, cho
sen and 6worn for said county for
the February adjourned term, I9O2,
beg leave to^flubmit the following
general presentments:
PublicJBuildings.
We have examined the public
buildings of the county and find
them in very good condition. We
recommend that the ordinary have
one room in the jail made suffic
ient to keep prisoners by re-ceiling
the north-west room with oak lum
ber one and one half inches thick,
filling it with twenty penny nails,
one inch apart, and provide said
room with one iron door and six
new locks, and' one door for closet
bv side of chimney.
Paupers.
We have examined the pauper
list of said county and recommend
that the following names be added
thereto;
Sarah Duglass, $5.00 per year.
Lizzie Scroggs *10 ” *’
Elijah Chastain |>10 ’’ ”
Aunt Talley $12 per year,
Margaret Tow $5 per Year.
We recommend that the amounts
paid the following be raised;
Thomas Cowart, from thirty five
to forty eight dollars.
Harriet Cannon, from ten to fif
teen dollars.
Fajan Wall, from five to fifteen
dollars.
We recommend that the ordi
nary pay at once to Emma Will-
hite the sum of fifteen dollars.
Wo recommend that the Ordi
nary pay to James Stancil $15 for
taking care of Ruthy Littleton, a
pauper who is now dead, in addi
tion to a'ny amount that might be
due her as a pauper at this time.
We recommend that the Ordi
nary pay to Dr. W. * J. Green ten
dollars ftfr services as an expert
the examination of Mrs. Vig Ar-
rendale - for lunacy. *
We recommend that the ordinary
pay Dr. J. C. Dover $11.25 lor
medical attention rendered to W.
S. Mahnffey, W. E. Williams and
Win, Giles, whiie confined in the
couuty jail.
County Officers.
The committee appointed by the
last Grand Jury tp examine the va
rious county offices haB made re
port and we have adopted the same
except as hereafter stated- Said
report is hereto appended and made
a part ot these presentments. In
reference to that part of said re
port touching the affairs of the
County School Commissioner con
cerning the paying out of money
to Garland and Edge we wish to
say: That said committee ren
dered a correct report as based on
the information they had before
them at the time; but we are glad
to report that all seeming mistakes
of the School Commissioner in pay
ing out money aud otherwise have
keen adjusted with the State School
Commissioner.
£We find three vacancies in the
County School Board occasioned
by the expiration of the terms of
Dr. W. J. Green, Z. B. Dillard and
Cicero Blalock, and we have elec
ted to fill said vacancies Dr. W. J.
Green, James F, Keener and John
Howard.
We have examined the dockets
of the Justices of the Peace and No
taries Public in the various dis
tricts except the 1O14U1 district.
They were all found to be correct.
It appears that there was no officer
in the 10i4th district and wnat be
came of the old docket we have
not been able to ascertain.
We have elected William K. Ow
ens as Notary Public and Ex. Off.

nary, at the expense of the county,
have bnilt a substantial wooden
bridge at or near the ford on Bet
ty’s Creek on the Rabun Gap and |
Franklin road—provided the citi-j
zens of the Volley district shall,
have first contributed one hundred]
dollars in money, labor or material j
towards the construction of said
bridge.
We recommend that the proper
authorities build a bridge over
Scott’s Creek on the road from
Clayton to Tullu’.ah Falls.
We recommend that the follow
ing pieces of road he considered as
private roads aud that the gates re
main on said roads as formerly to-
wit: The Blalock road, beginning
at the djstiict'line in Clayton dis
trict and running Southeast to Ju
lius Taylor’s, thence to the public
load near the bridge on Tiger
creek: auW the James Ke>l road be
ginning at a top of the hill near
Captain Beck’s, thence to district
line near Hale Ridge.
We find the roads of the county
in reasonably good condition.
We append hereto reports made
to the body by the Ordinary, Tren®
urer and County School Commis
sioner.
We recommend that the Clerk of
this body be paid 25 cents per day
extra for his services.
We recommend that these pre
sentments be published in the Clay
ton Tribune and that 1 ho publisher
be paid five dollars therefor.
We have examined the pension
list and make no recommendation
in respect thereto, believing the ;
same to be right as it stands.
