Our readers are all aware of
lie fact that the special election
for county tax tor'educational I
purposes is to be held next Mon
day. Let all frj nds of educa-,
tion and progress be present at
their election precincts and work
earnestly as well as vote forbids
measure.
The Public School,~'Jis the only
means of education that has ever
been made to reach and benefit
the masses of the people. The
wealthy can educate their^chil-
dren, if need be, without the aid
of the PublicSchool, but the state
and the county cannot afford to
allow any children to grow up
without preparation for hte and
work.
Americans have always believ
ed in freedom and equality of op
portunity, and there can be no
equality of opportunity so long as
education is conlined to a few.
The plan of taxation for schools
simply means that the burden oi
the education of the young^is. to
be borne by all citizens in pro
portion to their abiniy to pay.
For us k means that children in
all parts oi our county are to
have longer schools, taught by
teachers who are paid enough to
enable them to prepare tnem-
gelves,to do good work. If also
means that all corporations and
nonresidents having property in
in our county are to help, educate
our children. Tax returns snow
that about one tmrd of the tax
In our county is paid 0y such cor
porations and nonresidents,
which means that Lney would
bear one tmrd ot tne extra ex
pense of improving our schools.
To accept tins aid is good easi
ness policy,
If the election is carried in
fayor of the Local Tax, the rate
will likely be from 20 to 30 cts on
the hundred dollars. A man own
ing property valued at $2000.00,
should the rate be 20 cts., would
be called upon to pay $4.00 for
schools. This would be a very
small burden, and for citizens
having less, it would be smaller
still. Yet such a sacrifice on the
part of our people means better
educationargfacilities for every
child in^ our ..county. It, means
that our county withstand higher
ip the estimation of its own dtp
zens and of the rest of our state.
It will tend to hold our best citi
zens in our borders, and it will
tend to bring good people to our
county from elsewhere. But
more important than all else, it
will give our boys* and girls an
equal chance with those of Ful
ton, Hancock, Morgan, Richmond
and the other" progressive coun
ties of our great state. The Bible
hid. Our county is set
It is to prepare a hoy o* girl to do
more work and better work. The
old time farmer in Georgia was
content to.raise n;ne bushels of
corn on an acre. Now 1 housands
of boys, by the quickening and-
stimulating influence of good
training, have raised from 50 to
100 bushels to the acre. That is
the effect of real education. We
do not desire to educate your boy
away from the corn field, but to
prepare him to"; be a better hand
in the field by working with his
head as well'as with [his hands. 1
Rabun county has good soil and
a great dimale.£Let us train our
boys'and girls tojuse their splen-1
did resources, remembering that
what they cannot use, they must
lose.
Now is the time for patriotism.;
The baiiot box is§tbe test of your!
citizenship.

Mr. Editor;
I like your articles' favorong
better schools for this county.
Some points you have covered
very well, but one important
point you pave omitted.
Which is more important to a hu
man being, the mental or the
physical welfare? From the in
vestigation ; made by Dr. Abber-
crorntr ■ last summer you know
a large percentage of our school
children are infected with hook
worms and that the sanitary con
ditions of our country schools is
totally neglected, endangering
thereby not only infection from
hook worms and other worm par
ishes, but also of typhoid germs
and other germ maladies.
In many of the schools where
Ojr children are taught t.herej&re
no pro visions, for desks, and the
poor children have to bend over
in-an unhealthful way to do their
writing. In many places also no
provisions are made for good
drinking water. We do need more
funds for our schools, but our
first obligation is, 1 think,! not to
cripple cur children physically
while endeavoring to give them
some mental training, When all
the e Sanitary meksures are pro
vided. then give them good teach
ers, teachers on whose morality
you can depend, teachers who
kno\v the import of goocf citizen
ship and can prepare the young
Americans for effective life.
Why boast of "Ur climate if
our offsprings do not show it? We
cannot take our belongings with
us from this world. Let us trv to
leave'our children with good
health and bright minds.
The laches of Clayton, with
motherly spirit, have done won
ders for school improvement for
Clayton, Let the ladies ail over
the county follow them and take
an equally active interest in
school matters. It has well been
said that the teacher stands next
to the parents in the child’s life.
Yours for betterment every
time.

Jasper county voted in favor
of “Special School Tax” by more
than four to one last Thursday.
This past year Jasper county had
five of Rabun county’s girls teach
ing in her schools.
TO THE COUNTY PEOPLE.
I have only good will for the
people of Rabun. Have no chil
dren to send to school, but have
a little place in the country to pay
tax upon and willing to do so,
because it helps the most for
what it costs. The cost is noth
ing compared to elevating your
children in morals, refinement
and intelligence. My county
(Jasper) went for local Taxation
for public schools last week by a
majori ty,of more than 300.
I want Rabun county to give a
bigmajority’for that insignificant
tax. J. F. Walker.
