NUMBER 40
MANY NEW BUILDINGS
IN PROCESS OF CON
STRUCTION
TWO NEW STORES AND
SEVERAL DWELLINGS
Since the rush of the season
hds passed over and most of our
guests have gone, Clayton is now
engaged in a building campaign
which will add materially to the
business interest of the town as
well as to the looks of it.
Messers C. E. Cannon and T.
E. Roan have a crew of brick
layers at Work on their store
buildings, on Savannah Street,
juAt west of and adjoining the
Tribune Building. These two
store rooms, which are being
l)uitded together, are 45 feel
wide facing the street and ex
tend back 80 feet and will be
two stories high.
Mr. Roan will have the tele
phone exchange office in the
second story of his building and
Mr. Cannon will probably make
storage and office rooms in his
part of thei)uilding, •
There has been some talk of
the flMasons building another
story on top of the two \>einK
buiided, tor Masonic Headquar
ters. which if done will make a
three-story Imilding,
These /gentlemen expect to
have the building done before
Christmas and will move their
stores as soon as possiple.
Mr Webb Derrick is overhaul
ing his dwelling, in front of the
ourt house, and when completed
will be one of the most hand
some dwellings in town. He is
adding eight more rooms to the
four he already had and will
have a two story house with a
garrett that will be used - for
sleeping rooms.
Mr. W. M. Teague is erecting
a four room cottage in East
0layton. tin the.Davis sub-divis
ion, near the home of J. R.
Stonecypher. When completed
Mr. Teague expects to move his
family into the cottage.
Col. Clyde Holden is building
another story on his dwelling
and will have, when completed,
a handsome residence which he
will’probttbly use as a boarding
house.
Mr. P. A. Hunter is preparing
to build a four room cottage
near his residence, which will
be for renting purposes.
Mrs, C. C. Wall is recovering
and making some other needed
improvements in her dwelling.
The work mentioned is onjy a
beginning of the work that will
be done here in the next few
months, if rumors are to be
believed.
VALLEY VOCATIONAL
SCHOOL GIVES BARBECUE
VALLEY VOCATIONAL HIGH
The Vocational teachers, ol
The barbecue advertised to M the Ninth District, held a con-
given some time ago by t,he Val-; Jy en tion at the school building, al
leV Vocational School, at Dillard,! rpuiard, last "Saturday, Oct. 4th
and which was postponed untiIJT t which time the ladies of the
last Saturday on account
rains was a splendid success.
The ladies of the Parent-
Teacher Association were the
sponsors of the barbecue which
was given on account of the
gathering there of the Vocational
teachers, of the Ninth Congres
sional District.
They were disappointed on ac
count of some of the speakers
not being able to get there. Some
of them had to attend the South
eastern Fair in Atlanta, where
they will be in charge of some
of the Agricultural exhibits and
schools which are provided for
by the Fair.
A splendid gathering was
there to respond to the effort of
the ladies to entertain them
though not near enough people
to consume the bounteous feast
they had prepared.
In fact, it was a barbecue in"
which there was plenty for ev
eryone and some to spare. There
were two whole carcasses that
were not taken off the pit until
after the dinner was over and
there had been plenty carved to
have fed the crowd twice with
several baskets of fragments
left 6v«f.
Dillard enjoys the distinction
of having a corpse of teacher*
that measures up to the highest
standard required by the school
authorities and judging from ap
pearance of the building and
grounds they will sustain their
reputation and we predict for
the Valley Vocational School a
year of unprecidented success,
Not only are the teachers of
the-Valley school on the job but
the Parent-Teachers Association
are ever alert to their duty and
to the things that pertain to the
best interest of the school.

Our neighbor, Mountain City,
had the honor of being hostess
to the Rabun County Singing

day and Sunday.
Though we were not able to
attend until Sunday afternoon it
is reported that it was one of
the best conventions in the his
tory of the organization and
judging from the attendance on,
Sunday afterrioori there was no
